Any doubts about Michael Jackson's megastardom should have ended after news of the singer's death tripped up Google and crashed AOL Instant Messenger, Wikipedia, TMZ and, of course, Twitter. A survey of the epic traffic:

* Leading news websites saw traffic surge to 4.2 million visitors per minute from around 2.75 million visitors per minute, according to Akamai.

* CNN's traffic grew fivefold in one hour and the site clocked 20 million pageviews.

* Twitter had its biggest spike in traffic, to 5,000 tweets per second, since Barack Obama's election as president, according to co-founder Biz Stone.

* Facebook status updates tripled.

* AOL Instant Messenger went down for 40 minutes.

* TMZ, which broke the news of Jackson's death, crashed several times amid a surge of traffic.

* The LA Times, which got early confirmation of the death, went down, as well.

* For about half an hour, Michael Jackson queries weren't working on Google News.

* Wikipedia froze amid an edit war on Jackson's page.

A group called the Ad Hoc Committee of Consumer Victims of GM and Chrysler put together a commercial to run on Comcast throughout the weekend. The group numbers 460 people, 300 of whom are plaintiffs against GM, the rest against Chrysler, all of whom claim catastrophic injuries or the deaths of relations due to defective vehicles from the two companies.

The ad attacks the issue of New GM not being responsible for such liabilities. The claims, said to add up to about $1.25 billion for just the GM parties, would be addressed by the Old GM and lumped in with every other unsecured creditor's claims. That means that if the plaintiffs received anything at all, it wouldn't be much. GM is just following the government's orders -- it was the Administration that decreed post-bankruptcy Chrysler and GM won't be responsible for vehicles sold previous to bankruptcy.

GM's attorneys called Comcast, and Comcast explained pulling the ad by saying "We have temporarily stopped airing the ad while we conduct a review of the claims it makes." The commercial only asserts a few facts which could be easily checked, and makes a generalization about claims that won't be reported if people know nothing will come of them. Comcast hasn't given any timeline for that review, though.

WASHINGTON — President Obama on Friday had some of his strongest words for Iran President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his country's disputed election, which has resulted in protesters being beaten and killed.

Mr. Obama said he doesn't take seriously Mr. Ahmadinejad's request for an apology for the U.S. meddling in the June 12 election. He also said Mr. Ahmadinejad should instead "think carefully" about his obligations to those beaten, shot and killed in the post-election marches.

"The violence perpetrated against them is outrageous. We see it and we condemn it," Mr. Obama said an East Room news conference after meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The president also said his administration has not interfered in the election and has made every effort to make that clear.

Mrs. Merkel said the international community must help to identify victims who were beaten, arrested or killed by the Iranian government.

"We will not forget," she said through a translator. "Iran can't count on the world community turning a blind eye."

Mr. Obama nodded as he listened to the translation.

The president said the post-election violence will have an effect on international negotiations to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, though he said he doesn't know how they will be affected.

Protesters claim irregularities and have demanded a recount in the election is which Mr. Ahmadinejad won in a landslide victory over Mir Hossein Mousavi. The violence occurred in the days after the election when Iranian security forces turned back hundreds protesters marching in the streets of Tehran and elsewhere in the country.

The death count varies from the government count of 20 to the protesters' count of 200. Hundreds more have been beaten and arrested.
