im sick of that thing just sitting in my driveway sucking up money

If you all arent aware of it, the engine is messed up.

There is a very eminent knocking on the left side of the engine.

Only happens when it gets warm.

i was tolld it might be the camfhaft or a rod...i forgot

I know you guys are gear heads so i thought you might be able to help me on this

i believe it was because of lack of oil, low oil pressure.

After it gets hot it runs about 5-10 PSI and knocks like mad ( sounds like a diesel)

Dont have much money, so the cheapest/best idea is preferred

ummm...u've got a rod knocking...

basiclly what's happened is the lack of oil has caused the bearings either on the rod end or in the main bearings themselves to get scarred.

sounds like a bad oil pump as well...or some passages clogged up...

anyway, ur goingto have to rebuild the bottom end...

best case scenerio..u buy new rod and main bearings, as well as an oil pump, u mic the crank and find no flat spots.....truck fixed...

worst case, when u mic the crank, u find a flat spot (where a bearing would ride) and now u have to either get the crank turned or purchase a new crank as well as the bearings and oil pump...

take it to a certified mechanic man...it needs a bottom end rebuild. while not sever, it is major and needs to be done right!

wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :slayer:

no clue...most shops charge around $55-60 per hour..some more. figure about 16 hours labor..about $50 for bearings..$50-75 for an oil pump....and if u need it, $250-400 for a crank.

but shop around, maybe u can find a shop that will charge a flat rate. this will be the expensive part (the labor), the parts are relatively inexpensive.

good luck!!

~ $1000 15hrs @ $57.50/hr w/o crank.

Or drop $15, 000 on a 454 Ram Jet crate.

"The Ram Jet is intended for use in 1978 and earlier pre-emission street vehicles and any year off-road vehicles" ... bullchit, go for it ... ;)

for $15k he can get the 502...lol....like 600hp worth... :+1:

there is a remote chance you might have a bad exhaust manifold gasket,

I have had that problem in the past and it had that sound of a Valve tap or mis-aligned rockers, and it was just that the pressure was off and the gases were escaping out the hole or leak in the gasket, very common on American made vehicles with cheap cork gaskets

  • Author

I doubt thats it since the oil pressure drops so much

i kinda wish I could do this myself

Like you guys said, the kicker is the labour

  • Author

i wish i did

ive got tools

ive got mechanical skill

but i dont really know exactly what to do and i dont know of my parents would let me

screw it

i have to pick up this time

brb

this is something that you could do at home, but I seriously DO NOT suggest that you try it. If you've never torn down an engine, you prolly shouldnt be doing this. As you stated earlier, you have no mechanic friends, so there is no one to bail you out or keep a watchful eye.

That being said, You could do it yerself, but by the time that you buy the equipment, rent the picker & tools, and widdle away at the project 3 hours a day for 2-4 weeks after school.... You might as well have bought new/used block.

Sorry Bubba.

agreed....

definitely a DIY if u have the time and patience...

i personally don't like plastigageing all the caps...but it needs to be done. also, there is the chance u'll be dropping the tranny (transfercase) to get the crank to drop enough..

but look around, some smaller mom and pop shop's will just charge a flat rate...
