Posted June 1, 200916 yr Going for a two way set-up. I think I can make 8s fit, but it will be a pain in the ass in my little car, if its even necessary haha. But i do want strong midbass, and as for tweets I've always liked them ever so slightly to the aggressive side. I listen to a wide range of metal, from softer stuff to death metal like nile and suffocation. Also I like prog-rock as well as a bit of mainstream stuff too. A bit of rap gets played, but that's mostly when the girl starts playing with the stereo, and she completely unbends my sub and blasts it while shes at it, so something that could take a little bit of abuse would be nice, though obviously nothing is indestructible.... she's not a complete retard with the volume but still......My current Hu can't do active so I'll need suggestions for that as well as speakers. As for power I have 100x2 and 75x2 via old school us acoustics when they were made by zed, usa series chrome Yes yes I know install is 95% of it, but I would like something with a decent off axis response as well, not only are kick pods out of my budget, but there's no room next to the clutch pedal to put one anyways..........I'd like to keep it under 600 bucks if that's possible, hell under 500 would be better, but I know I gotta spend a bit since I'll be buying a Hu too, and I'm braced for that.... sort of lol............ Or would I just be better off going with a set of passive comps?Oh, and this is going in a little 2 door svt ford focus hatchback. Edited June 1, 200916 yr by ScreamBloodyGorguts
June 1, 200916 yr I run AA 7" Carbon Fiber Mids and Morel MDT-12 Tweeters in my van doors. Very strong mid-bass and the tweets are aweome. XO at 2300 Hz.You should be able to buy (2) mids and (2) tweeters for under $230.If you like the headunit you have now, why not just add a 2-channel active XO? Something like the Kicker KX3 is under $100.
June 1, 200916 yr Personally I'd sell your current headunit and add that into the budget and buy an active capable h/u.I'd like to know by what you mean aggressive as it is subjective, I know what it would mean for me.What are your mounting locations/aiming? Any speakers that you've heard that you really like the tweet from?
June 2, 200916 yr Author My current hu is a pioneer deh-5900ib with the blown pico and alt whine... never hot swapped and its properly grounded but it still happened, guess I could fix it... Never worked around a circuit like that, but hey might as well start sometime.. And i have thought about an external x-over before and yes that is an option, but it would be nice to be able to control everything from the hu, and i guess burr-browns would be a plus too, as my current hu doesn't...And to M5, um overall smoothness could be slightly sacrificed for a little more sharpness and detail on the high cymbal's I guess. Sadly I can"t really tell you any tweets that I've heard and really liked, If i go to a car audio place to demo around here I'll be greeted with poor service, small selection with the highest end stuff consisting of low-mid range polk. ...mounting locations, and don't kill me now lol..... mids in stock location(well of course cut out and baffle made to fit) And tweets I would also like to keep in the door somewhere, maybe right next to the mids.... I keep my seat on the floor and the stock location is actually decently high up, however I am willing to play around with the tweets location and aiming and will consider placing them elsewhere if it is a big enough difference to me....I am willing to fudge my budget a bit if i really really need to. June 2, 200916 yr Can you fit a full size tweet or just small format ones? Any depth restrictions on the 7" or 8"?
June 2, 200916 yr Author I took some measurements the other day and I believe i can make 4" deep fit, didn't realize i forgot to post that. As far as the tweets I doubt size will be much of an issue there.
June 2, 200916 yr Author Always have liked metal tweets, but maybe that's just because I have never really been exposed to any of the better silk ones. And I'll get some pics of the usa's when I get a chance. Edited June 2, 200916 yr by ScreamBloodyGorguts
June 7, 200916 yr Author Chrome usa's ...cell phone pics, my camera crapped out on me.... ....anyways *bump* anybody got any suggestions? never gone active before but I'd like to
June 7, 200916 yr i tried alittle something different with my speaker selection, as explained in my post here.before i decided to do things this way i was just going to do a simple mach5 mli 6.5s (or AA carbons) and some seas tweets. im still new to this kinda stuffid also recommend the hu im using (listed in my link) if u dont want to spend to much but still want something thats pretty decent. its actually only about 140 on sonicelectronix.com... i payed 200 right before xmas, then it dropped its price in January... the disadvantage to this hu is the display is hard to read if theres some glare.then again, if u have the budget for something like the pioneer 880prs or something like that id probably spend the extra bills for it,
June 9, 200916 yr Author yeah I saw that thread, but I'm worried about off axis response with that route, as the install in this car won't be perfect. And i have been thinking about something along the lines of the 880, or a high end alpine...
June 9, 200916 yr ahh i see point, sorry i dont have much advice to give ya. still new to this stuff myself..
June 12, 200916 yr Author Thanks for the help anyways....I've been thinking the pio 800/880 or maybe trying out an alpine, the 9887. also for mids some seas CA18RNX as they seem to be able to play pretty high up. as for tweets, still looking.... I can get them pretty well on axis if i went for some that weren't full sized. Also I forgot to mention, I've already deadened my doors, so no need to factor that in to the price..... June 12, 200916 yr Author I'd really consider the mounting locations before the decision.Mids have to go in the doors, tweets however I can play around with and mount them wherever sounds best in my car to my ears.
