Posted December 2, 200915 yr Hello everyone. I am receiving a 12 inch Q for Christmas which I am rather pleased about because Fi woofers are class... I was wondering what I should do about a box, the woofer is going in my bedroom instead of a car but all the reviews I have read about the Q lead me to it. It will be used entirely for music, rock, techno, a little pop, and perhaps some rap to show off a little. The room is about 8x10x8 with a chunk removed that is about a 18 inches by 3 feet for a closet, so not a terribly large room. One of my questions is the great sealed vs ported debate, which would sound better in this application. The Q will be more than plenty in a room this size either way.I've been prototyping a couple of box designs with WinISD, when I create a box that is 70.7 liters and tuned to 24 hz the response is flat to about 30.16hz, Is this tuned too low considering I do not listen to rap as a rule? Also when I create a box that is sealed and the recommended volume the roll off starts at about 70hz.. Would tweaking the volume change much? I tried Scott's recommendation for 32hz but it makes a large peak there, and doesn't that create boomyness?Summary:Fi Q 12 on either 350 or 500w. In a small room in a house looking for quality over quantity. Is sealed better than ported, I don't listen to rap usually.
December 8, 200915 yr You don't listen to rap, so you think it is tuned too low? A lot of rap bass is in the 40-50Hz range, because that is where the bass boost works so that silly kids drivin' around with the windows down with their HIGH-TUNED pre-fab boxed subs can destroy things. Not to say that rap doesn't get low... "Put On" by Young Jeezy is apparently 27Hz at lowest...32 Hz is according to Fi, so I stuck by their recommendations and I love what I got... However, if it peaks there, then I guess go with the curve...
