  • Whew it's been a long time since I've done a build for myself. This one is modest and not going to be as insane as my last, but then again I am a little bit older now...

Voltage issues!!! :suicide-santa:

Stock alt puts out 14.3 volts at idle.

New Mechman only puts out 12.1 and makes engine run rough......WTF??????

could it be the pulley size?

I was kinda wondering the same thing. That's a big difference between 14 and 12. Might want to rev it up and see what it puts out.

I'm wondering about resting voltage because if it was higher then 12.1 when you started it up then what the hell is that? The bat charging the alt?

Hopefully you didn't get a bunk alt bro

Well I spoke to the guy at Mechman....

I have a little list of things to check.

Pulley that comes on it is recommended to stay..( No switching)

Double check resting voltage of secondary battery....

Then DMM the Green and Yellow wire on the adapter that plugs into the alt

to see if it's getting power. (to make sure the alt is turning on & the batteries aren't the only thing running engine)

Double check ground cabling...(I did but I'll do it again for sh**'s and giggles)

If all else fails, it'll have to make a trip back to them to see what's up with it.

He re assured me that all of them get tested to at least put out advertised amperage before they get shipped.

That being said, If I can't find out what's up then I guess UPS beat the snot out of it during shipping.......

Any two ways about it, I feel like slamming my head in the hood!!! LOL

(not really, I'm just tired of having alternator issues when the stock one works like a dream, just not enough amps.)

Let's go probing with a meter!!!!! Yeah!!!!! :woot: ~~~~~~ :suicide-santa:

The joys/headaches of car audio :peepwall: I hope you get it figured out bro.

O.K. Here's the scoop.

:puzzled:GLUE :puzzled:

When the adapter harness was made, the plastic socket/plug had to be glued to hold the wires securely in the harness.

Well.........Glue leaked down two of the three pins inside the harness. Completely glazing the whole both pins.

Here's how I found it out:

Turn the ignition on but DO NOT start the engine.

Test the Yellow wire on the end of the plug and put the black probe/clamp on a good ground. This should now read the same as at the battery.

(Problem ~ I had no reading at all)

Next, repeat the process with the Green wire. This should also read the same as the battery but may be a couple tenths lower.

(Problem ~ I had nothing here as well)

When I did this test on the stock plug/harness, I had good readings.....

Inspected the harness and notices the glue on the pins.

Removed the glue with a small machining file. (tiny, fine tooth file)

After all that, It's alive!!!! 14.2 volts all the way to the rear....

When the Icons are hurling it only loses .2 volts when it really digs deep.

No video yet, I need to do a bit of cleaning up and inspecting everything to make sure there are no cracks in the hood from the pressure.

But I do have some new pics.... :fing34:

New inline fuse bracket, 10Ga. 316L Stainless Steel.

New battery top bracket, same material as above. The foam on the top is being replaced by black Armaflex foam.

Me putting the alt in the first time...8 hours at work the came home for 4 hours on the install.

Day two. Put the alt back in after cleaning the plug.

Finally got some help the past couple days from my bud James. He's putting the new bracket on the battery and checking cables.

Is this considered a wall or half wall?

I'm trying to understand the classes and rules for DB Drag and Bass Race.

Plus I've read that if the system is over 140db you must be outside the vehicle....

I lost my remote for the H/U so is this an issue?

Would it be wise to wire up a long harness to control volume & playback during the comp?

This being my first comp, I'm really confused about the rules.

Can anyone answer any of these questions?

I would appreciate it very much if some of the veterans could point my in the right directions..

Please help!!!
