Those of you interested in dB of tracks. WELL let me introduce you to MP3Gain. This handy program is used by many digital DJ's to make all their track the same volume so that when they are in the mix there is very little variation in volume from song to song.

Here's what they say about their program:

Tired of reaching for your volume knob every time your mp3 player changes to a new song? MP3Gain analyzes and adjusts mp3 files so that they have the same volume. MP3Gain does not just do peak normalization, as many normalizers do. Instead, it does some statistical analysis to determine how loud the file actually sounds to the human ear. Also, the changes MP3Gain makes are completely lossless. There is no quality lost in the change because the program adjusts the mp3 file directly, without decoding and re-encoding.

If you think I am some rep trying to get people to buy this program then you are WRONG because it's FREE! I am just a DJ who utilizes this tool with all his music (digital files). It is the best!

Anyhow I use it on all my music, even the music I listen to in my car. Weather I make a CD, play it off my MP# player, or with the music on my SDHC card.

I use 92 dB for all my DJ music. I was thinking of trying a slightly higher dB (maybe 95dB) for the music on my SDHC card which I use in my car. You can change the dB to anything you want and erase any changes you have made and bring it back to it's original dB.

BTW I have noticed by analyzing the music with MP3Gain, that the most common dB range for music before I change it is 95dB and up. Many track go into clipping.

I ask because my gains are set to -6 db because I don't compete and I don't play bass tracks. I just want them loud on music. So if its showing a peak at -12 db's, but the little L & R channel graph is hitting 0 db's and a tad beyond because of clipping, am I over driving my subs? They sound fine to me at full tilt when I step away from the car, but I am a newbie, so hearing a tad bit of distortion is harder for me. I can post screen shots of what I mean if that would help when I get home.

Disclaimer: I am no expert on this stuff. This is mostly just what I have learned through my experience as a DJ in the pro-audio world.

First I would say that clipping on a amp and clipping on a track are two different things.

Clipping on a track (analyzed w/Audacity or MP3Gain) really might just translates to parts of the song being slightly distorted at any volume. Mostly you will not be able to hear any of the clipping unless you are using audiophile level equipment. Unless you turn up the dB level with MP3Gain for instance. Say to 110dB. This will make the track sound bad at ANY volume. Distorted.

Now clipping on an amp is a whole different thing. Here is what wiki says:

Clipping is a form of waveform distortion that occurs when an amplifier is overdriven and attempts to deliver an output voltage or current beyond its maximum capability. Driving an amplifier into clipping may cause it to output power in excess of its published ratings.

This translates to bad sound and may cause damage to both speakers and amp if it is prolonged. Now occasional clipping(a little blink of the red light infrequently) is not an issue usually. Usually just a part of a track that is basically really loud.

Like I said I am not an expert. But dealing with clipping and tracks as a DJ in the pro-audio world I try and lower the dB on the tracks with MP3Gain (I use 92 dB)

just so I get a good quality sounding track. On my equipment I follow the basic Gain Structure procedure (look it up there is info all over the net about this) to set my gains on all of my equipment. What this means basically is I want my equipment to go as loud as possible and not distort. I want headroom without going into clipping on my amps. Also getting the gain structure right will also eliminate the noise(usually hiss) , which diminishes the SQ over all.

Like I said not an expert but I do dabble in this as a DJ and it translates to car audio as well.

I think your set-up is probably ok. I wouldn't worry about it. As long as it sounds good to you then that's all that really matters.
