Posted October 19, 201014 yr Anyone else here about DD making a new Z with a 6" coil on something bigger than a 18"Or is it just a fake video they are putting out? That neo magnet is HUGE
October 19, 201014 yr No idea, but I can't see the need. I can think of several reasons why, but weight seems to be the ultimate limiting factor.
October 19, 201014 yr ^ Exactly, there is a huge probl;em with weight with a 6" coil. SPL is about efficiency, adding weight where it doesn't need to be is not going to happen.
October 20, 201014 yr Inductance could easily become another issue. I don't really know how much SPL guys look at the inductance of a coil, but if the inductance is high enough (which will increase as coil diameter increases) it will negatively affect the performance of the driver within the frequency band SPL'ers use. With great coil size, comes great inductance. (Anyone catch the Spiderman thing I had going on there?)
October 20, 201014 yr The JL shallow mount is a 5" coil right? 7-inch and 5.5-inch diameterWhich one is it?

(Anyone catch the Spiderman thing I had going on there?)For most of them inductance won't matter because of the one note woofers they already use. It's not necessarily coil size, but length right? If you take a very wide coil like the JL TW5 with it's 5.5" coil, but it's a very small wind height so inductance probably isn't a big problem as I'm willing to bet there is about the same amount of copper in it's coil vs. a "typical" 3" coil.
October 20, 201014 yr The JL shallow mount is a 5" coil right? It doesn't need to withstand gobs of power though....IMO an SPL coil should have considerable amount of wire.I wonder if DD would build that with an 8 inch spider, would be fun to see.

October 20, 201014 yr There are a few pro-audio drivers with 6" coils and resonable inductance w/high power handling. High efficency too....Also, you need to think about it as surface area, so a large diameter coil may have no more inductance and weight than a smaller diameter coil that is longer...

October 20, 201014 yr For most of them inductance won't matter because of the one note woofers they already use.Just for an example; If you have a driver with an Re of .7ohm and an Le of 2mH, you'd end up with an Fc of 56hz. It's not necessarily coil size, but length right? It's the amount of wire in the gap. A larger diameter coil is going to necessarily have more wire in the gap (all else equal)Certainly it's possible to reduce the inductance by using less wire or other tricks to lower inductance. But as I said; it could become an issue if it wasn't addressed.
