A nice feature of the Soundsplinter drivers is the aluminum cone for its heat dissipation capability.

I've never quite understood why all the supposed power people feed their drivers in sealed, insulated boxes doesn't cause them to burst into flames. Well, paper cone drivers, anyway.

Has anyone ever checked how warm the cones get?

I should be getting a new 15" RL-P soon, to replace my Blueprint Designs BP-1503 in this:

the dustcap of the '1503 gets warm... real warm.

I've pulled the driver after running it real hard (1200 watts from it's plate amp) and the magnet and frame/backplate were so hot I couldn't touch it.

I'd imagine the RL-P to do the same, but maybe be able to dissipate heat faster than the '1503.

Well, given that the cone will flex during high excursion; wouldn't that deform the cone aswell?

aluminum has a pretty high melting point of around 1220 degrees F. if the cone got anywhere close to that temperature, your car would be toast.

I seriously doubt the cone would get hot enough to be deformed by hand; I think that would have to be several hundred degrees, and if that were the case the VC would be toast.

Isn't the BP an underhung design with huge xmax? Do you expect the RLp to be an improvement?

I believe it was actually denim who brought up the deformation comment (at any rate, it surely wasn't me). Anytime an aluminum cone is moving you should not touch it, as the force of impact could dent it. However, if a warm cone is at rest, there should not be any problems in touching it. If you're really juicin' the driver, the cone can almost be too hot to touch, but it still maintains its structural integrity just fine so long as you aren't beating the poor thing.

The BP-1503 was/is an high excursion driver, I don't know if it's an UH design - could well be...

I'm not sure if the RL-P is going to out perform my BP-1503, but since the '1503 has developed a rattle, and there are no more re-cone kits to be had (thanks a bunch to UPS losing mine twice... :Doh: ). The RL-P does have dual spiders though, this is a plus compared to my BP-1503....

I've ordered a dual 4 ohm 15"er, and this will allow me to run it at 600 watts , and if I need more, the ADA 1200 I'm driving it with will do a clean and nasty 1200 watts into 4 ohms - (a second RL-P in parallel).

it was me, because some jerk at a show a few years ago reached in and touched my cones while the system was on

there is just two little dimples on one of the 10's, no effect on the output or SQ,

they are taking nearly double their RMS now
