Posted April 23, 201114 yr Been out of audio for a few years now so Im going to need to get some advice on brands/models...I am looking at replacing and amping up my audio in a '06 BMW 3 series.Stock is 4" in doors, 1" tweets in upper doors. 8" sub under each seat.I want to get a Fosgate 360.1/2 and add in my 12" SI mag, but I can also skip the extra weight of the mag and just replace the stock 8" subs under each seat. This is some of the speakers to have been found to work on these cars...Are there anything better? Before I installed my new aftermarket system I did a ton of research and I ended up compiling a list of component speakers that had midrange drivers shallow enough to fit the front doors in my E90. AFAIK' date=' that means they fit in the front doors of any 3er or 1er sedan but I am not sure about the rear doors. The coupes reportedly have shallower front door mounting requirements than the sedans so YMMV. I thought I'd share the info so here it goes:[u']4" component systems:- Morel Dotech Ovation 4 - Top Mount Depth: 50 mm - Bottom Mount Depth: ? - Product Link: / http://www.morelhifi.com/products/mob_2way_dotech_ovation.html - Installation Link: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=299963&highlight=dotech- Morel Hybrid Ovation II 4 - Top Mount Depth: 50 mm - Bottom Mount Depth: ? - Product Link: http://www.morelhifi.com/products/mob_2way_dotech_ovation.html - Installation Link: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2566/4123410471_303fe199dc.jpg- BSW Stage I - Top Mount Depth: ? - Bottom Mount Depth: ? - Product Link: http://www.bavariansoundwerks.com/product/594/174/BMW-Speakers-Upgrade-3-Series-M3-E90/ - Focal 100KRS / 100KP - Top Mount Depth: 39 mm - Bottom Mount Depth: 44 mm - Product Link: http://www.focal-fr.com/catalogue-docs/EN/14/files/1761.pdf - Installation Link: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1190662&postcount=7- Focal 100VRS - Top Mount Depth: 40 mm - Bottom Mount Depth: ? - Product Link: http://akamaipix.crutchfield.com/Manuals/091/091100VRS.PDF - Installation Link: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=303672- Rainbow SLC 210.25 NG - Top Mount Depth: 46 mm - Bottom Mount Depth: ? - Product Link: http://195.243.203.21/rainbow/technical.aspx?pa=1221111&lan=ENG - Installation Link: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=451762- Rainbow CS 210 Vanadium - Top Mount Depth: 50 mm - Bottom Mount Depth: ? - Product Link: http://195.243.203.21/rainbow/technical.aspx?pa=127111&lan=ENG - Rainbow CS 210 Profi - Top Mount Depth: 50 mm - Bottom Mount Depth: ? - Product Link: http://195.243.203.21/rainbow/technical.aspx?pa=126111&lan=ENG - DLS PSA/PS4A - Top Mount Depth: 50 mm - Bottom Mount Depth: ? - Product Link: http://www.dls.se/en/car/prod.html?produkt=en_66 - MB Quart RUA 210 - Top Mount Depth: 32 mm - Bottom Mount Depth: ? - Product Link: http://www.maxxsonics.net/manuals/mbquart/pdfs/rua_210.pdf - MB Quart RVF 210 - Top Mount Depth: 46 mm - Bottom Mount Depth: ? - Product Link: http://www.maxxsonics.net/manuals/mbquart/pdfs/rvf_210.pdf - Diamond Audio HEX S400* - Top Mount Depth: 46 mm - Bottom Mount Depth: ? - Product Link: http://www.diamondaudio.com/manuals/hex_speaker_manual-2008.pdf - Renaissance SR-4.2 - Top Mount Depth: 46 mm - Bottom Mount Depth: ? - Product Link: http://www.renaudio.com/carstereo/SR-4.2.htm - Note: Tweeter may not fit OEM pods- Zapco CK-10.2 - Top Mount Depth: 48.25 mm - Bottom Mount Depth: ? - Product Link: http://www.zapco.com/prod/Speakers/Documents/CK-10.2.pdf - Helix P234 (aka H234 / HXS Precision [old model]) - Top Mount Depth: 47 mm - Bottom Mount Depth: ? - Product Link: http://www.audioaffinityusa.com/helixsite/08/helix_precision_compspeakers08.htm - Installation Link: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=391864&highlight=h2345.25" Component Systems:- DLS Reference RS5/RS5A - Top Mount Depth: 45 mm - Bottom Mount Depth: ? - Product Link: http://www.dls.se/en/car/prod.html?produkt=en_67 - Boston Acoustics S50 - Top Mount Depth: 47 mm - Bottom Mount Depth: ? - Product Link: http://mobile.bostonacoustics.com/Manuals/S50Man.pdf - MB Quart RUA 213* - Top Mount Depth: 42 mm - Bottom Mount Depth: ? - Product Link: http://www.maxxsonics.net/manuals/mbquart/pdfs/rua_213.pdf - Installation Link: http://www.e90post.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=325545&stc=1&d=1258132444 - Note: Requires dremeling speaker frame to fit inbetween OEM mounting screws - Focal 130 VRS - Top Mount Depth: 48.5 mm - Bottom Mount Depth: 53 mm - Product Link: http://www.focal-fr.com/catalogue-docs/EN/15/files/1304.pdfAnd while I'm at it, might as well list the possible woofer replacement drivers for under the seats:8" Woofers under Front Seats- Earthquake SWS-8 / SWS-8X (4/2 ohm) - Top Mount Depth: 2 1/8" - Product Link: http://www.earthquakesound.com/sws.htm - Installation Link: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=134066 - Note: This is a sub-woofer, not a midbass driver! Requires 3/4" spacer ring and Morel grille to protect cone & surround from floor carpet.- Kicker SSMB8* (Thanks Technic!) - Top Mount Depth: 59 mm - Product Link: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-cMCNI6DMmGi/p_2064SSMB8/Kicker-SSMB8.html - Installation Link: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpost.php?p=7222174&postcount=37 - Note: According to Technic, much better midbass driver than SWS-8, but not as good at sub-bass frequencies (30-40Hz), i.e. you will need an additional sub. Requires 1/2" spacer ring to fit enclosure and 1/4" shim underneath OEM grilles. Carpet needs to be cut away under seat rails to prevent surround hitting it but looks stock once seats installed.- Jehnert XE 200 - Top Mount Depth: 50 mm - Product Link: http://www.jehnert.de/typo3/index.php?id=bsse0&L=1 - Installation Link: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=451762 - Note: Requires spacers (thickness unknown). Manufacturer recommends the use of a subsonic filter starting at 80 Hz, suggesting this driver is optimized for mid-bass ("kick bass") and perhaps not well suited for sub-bass.- Morel MW 265-4 - Top Mount Depth: 69 mm - Product Link: https://www.madisound.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=613products_id613 - Installation Link: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showpost.php?p=8301500&postcount=18 - Note: Requires spacers (min. 3/4" thick but may vary depending on car and model year).- Renaissance WR-8 - Top Mount Depth: 69 mm - Product Link: http://www.renaudio.com/carstereo/WR-8.htm - Note: Dimensions seem to be identical to the Morel MW265-4. I am still checking to see if there are any substantial differences between the two. This driver has a very high power handling (200W) and a very low resonant frequency (30Hz) so it can almost be used like a subwoofer. Requires spacers (min. 3/4" thick but may vary depending on car and model year).* may no longer be available new, so check eBay.Feel free to post additional sets or corrections and I will be happy to update the list from time to time.
April 23, 201114 yr Hey had to get that one before anyone else did. Sadly I can't give any real recomendations as most of your list is well above my price range.J
April 23, 201114 yr Author What kind of depth are you limited to with the 8" subs?3" lol! If I add a mounting bracket on top I have to be careful to make sure the seat's runners will still bolt down.
April 23, 201114 yr Admin Hey J, good to see you around. Good luck on the driver selection. I am partial to Morel and Zapco.
April 24, 201114 yr What kind of depth are you limited to with the 8" subs?3" lol! If I add a mounting bracket on top I have to be careful to make sure the seat's runners will still bolt down.Want to use my MW-267's as subs?
April 24, 201114 yr Can you link me to some specs? Not sure what those are http://www.morelhifi.com/products/pdf/mw267.pdfNot a lot of xmax, but very snappy with low inductance and distortion...which you'll need since they'd probably be crossed a little higher than the usual 63/80hz if you're just putting 4"ers in the doors.
April 25, 201114 yr Author Those look quite nice. Im going to see what I can come up with on the doors though, falling short on that.
April 25, 201114 yr Just noticed the SI BM mkIII a while ago. Seems pretty cool. XBL^2 and 3.4" mounting depth. Sounds like you need to look at these.
April 25, 201114 yr Author General thoughts on these Sacn-speak set? https://www.madisound.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=45_245_318&products_id=9017Just noticed the SI BM mkIII a while ago. Seems pretty cool. XBL^2 and 3.4" mounting depth. Sounds like you need to look at these. Not enough room for them.
April 25, 201114 yr Author Its all good Ive pretty much decided Im going to just unhook the stock subs and add either my 12" SI Mag or my 12" Brahma MKII. Its just not worth it to add 8" subs with such limited space. Trying to find 4" Comps has become a chore. I may just fabricate and use 5.25" speakers.
