Hey, I have 2 kicker cvx 12's in a custom ported box that I just recently switched to fire into the cabin rather than towards the back of the trunk. In doing so, it boosted what sounds like the middle frequencies, but it killed off the super low frequencies and the higher frequencies. The reason I switched the box orientation is to reclaim some trunk space, which it did do. Now I am wondering if there is anything I can do to get those frequencies back, and make the bass not sound as "hollow" on certain notes. The trunk is not sealed off, although the box doesn't leave much space between itself and the opening into the trunk. Any help is appreciated!

Only setting was making the LPF slightly higher...The subs are still moving as much as they used to...its just they don't make much sound on certain notes, and make a ton on other notes...

when you flip it thats how it changes....

if you were to throw that same box in an SUV with the same settings you would be asking the same questions.

if you put the subs and port to the side of the car you will gain more back

you will need to retune the subs to the new position...when they where firing in to the trunk it was actting like a bandpass and giving you a bass boost so try that and see

when you flip it thats how it changes....

So fire the subs into the side of the car instead? I was actually considering doing this with my old box

what do you mean "retune" the subs?

re tune treat it like you just installed it... clear your settings from your head unit and 0 out all the settings on the amp... then retune.

You should really try to seal the enclosure to the opening. You could take some old clothes and stuff them tightly in around the box from the trunk side for temporary testing and see how that helps. If it helps then work on making a permanent seal. It can cause a lot of cancellations turning the subs around and not sealing it.

So if I seal the trunk and all the big holes in the rear deck will I reclaim most of my upper and lower bass? I like having them firing forward, and the extra trunk space is nice, but it isn't worth the cancellation. Would a better alternative be to go back to my prefab box and fire them into the side of the trunk?

No I did not switch boxes when I switched orientation. The whole point of all of this is to reclaim trunk space, and if I went back to the old box sideways id get more trunk space

You are experiencing cancellation from frequencies going into the trunk and coming back into the cabin. Forward firing your subs is a great orientation but you HAVE to seal off your trunk. Expanding foam works great for this. It is messy so use caution when applying it.

Forward firing woofers may not as loud as rear firing. Iirc the wavelength is longer when bounced through the trunk and therefore sounds better. The peak frequency in your car will definitely be diferent. Simply by moving your forward firing enclosure farther back into the trunk will help lower the peak frequency but eats up your trunk.

I think this new setup is too peaky...i just sealed off the trunk a little with some old clothes and will do more soon to test it...but it isn't a whole lot louder with the trunk open and playing than with the trunk closed. How does firing the subs into the side of the car sound? will i lose/gain much sq or spl vs. rear firing?

It's cancellation. Turn them around and fire back the way they were. That's the only way you will reclaim your bass.

I would do this.

Seal it off with expanding foam, you'll be thankful. Let's go through my history:

My first subs in a sealed prefab box, fired to the rear they hit lows much better, but lost a lot of the high end bass. Flipped them to fire forward (not sealed like you) and they hit the higher bass much better but lost all of the lows.

Second subs only did one orientation, don't worry about this setup.

My btls, fired forward without sealing, didn't quite nail the lows as I expected and the higher bass was not audible. Sealed it off with expanding foam, hits every frequency nice and smooth, a lot louder to the ear, smashes the lows.

You need to seal it off to make the flip worth while.
