Posted January 9, 200619 yr Ok so its too small(2 cubes net ), i won't even be using it, but i figure its a good opportunity to try staining. I'm going to be sanding it tomorrow and throwing a coat of stain on, i will update tomorrow with pics most likely. I am using the box until i make a design for two 12s The port is straighter than the staple holes suggest, i was just kinda guessing with them :-D free materials so i didn't have to worryhttp://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y50/vladd...io/100_0614.jpghttp://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y50/vladd...io/100_0613.jpghttp://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y50/vladd...io/100_0616.jpghttp://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y50/vladd...io/100_0618.jpghttp://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y50/vladd...io/100_0617.jpg
January 9, 200619 yr Author Just wanted to add a thanks to HCCAfan cause i have this for my component set to run the 6.5s, i will probably use my cadence to run my tweets till i can afford a 4002 to matchhttp://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y50/vladd...o/random001.jpghttp://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y50/vladd...o/random003.jpg
January 9, 200619 yr Not bad.But dont smear the glue on the joints. The stain wont cover that up and it will look very tacky.Hard to sand the inside of a port Edited January 9, 200619 yr by Eldorado
January 9, 200619 yr Author i know, can't find a way to fix that either :-/niece with small hands has gone home, nobody here has hands smaller than me i'll probably just sand as much as possible and see how it looks, hoping it'll be too dark in the port to telltook a little of the stain and applied very lightly to the inside of the box to see what it was going to look like, i'm not very happy with it, but it looks much better in the pics than in person...lolhttp://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y50/vladd...io/100_0638.jpghttp://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y50/vladd...io/100_0639.jpgput some red oak stain to the left of the old stuff, think i like the red oak morehttp://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y50/vladd...rcompare001.jpghttp://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y50/vladd...rcompare002.jpg Edited January 9, 200619 yr by vladd
January 10, 200619 yr I think it will look better with a lighter stain or just some clear lacquer. That's the ticket.
January 10, 200619 yr Author not going to sell it, just going to sit it in the closet. The problem with the lighter stain is some of the wood is really dark, which would be great for that (IMO) but for the lighter parts i wanted a darker stain.... i will probably throw a polyurethane clear on it tomorrow to add shine, here's the pics after 3 very thin coats of the red oak. You can see where i wasn't careful at all with the glue (had the idea of carpeting it when i built it, so glue spots didn't matter, just wanted it sealed extremely well)So she looks blotchy as hell, even after sanding the glue is still there (it soaked in nicely)These are the latest...on a more positive note, the places i filled with the putty stained very nicely even though the color was way offnow i'm going to try to polish the motor on the avalanche Edited January 10, 200619 yr by vladd
January 10, 200619 yr Author truth is this guy broke into the house, we had a mess to clean up after dealing with him, i figure this is a beautiful way to explain the red stains all over everything. It almost looks like it needs to be sanded then stained again but i'm afraid to sand it, don't know if i should after staining, anyone know?
January 10, 200619 yr Author i have some urethane, thats what i'm going to use, i'm not even going to use the box so i'm not goin to spend any more money on it (all i've spent is the $5 for stain and ended up using the stuff we already had)i figure a nice coat of urethane and some buffing should make it nice
January 11, 200619 yr Not sure with the stain, but with polyurethane you NEED to sand it afterwards.2 box comments though. If you are using ply, use 13 ply birch for a box--way stronger. And the other is I think your baffle and bracing aren't up to your sub. I know you aren't using it, but just had to comment. This coming from a guy who overbuilds everything!
January 11, 200619 yr Author i used that ply cause it was free, he wouldn't let me use his nice stuff for free. Another face on the front would have been nice, i just didn't have the time to really plan this box (this is when i was sick, on lots of meds and trying to design a box)
January 11, 200619 yr Author got bored today, too much of one thing on the box, so i went for masking tape...and couldn't find any, duct tape and packing tape and black spray paint =http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y50/vladd...io/lined006.jpghttp://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y50/vladd...io/lined010.jpghttp://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y50/vladd...io/lined005.jpgtomorrow it gets a light sanding to blend things and then clear + sanding buffing Edited January 11, 200619 yr by vladd
January 11, 200619 yr Author i think it helps it a lot, it stands out too much right now, after hitting it with some fine sandpaper it should blend much much better. It's raining here now so i don't know if i'll be clearing it tomorrow or not.
January 11, 200619 yr Author i wish i could...i've been sleeping about 4 hours, usually from noon-4pm, i can't get back on schedule, school is definately going to suck
January 11, 200619 yr Author http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y50/vladd06/clear004.jpghttp://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y50/vladd06/clear003.jpghttp://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y50/vladd06/clear002.jpghttp://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y50/vladd06/clear001.jpgi've not done anything except 1 coat of clear so far, wind is blowing like crazy so its running pretty badly, but i will be wetsanding later.
January 17, 200619 yr Author yea, i didn't have time to sand so its a very uneven finish. But oh well. lessons were definately learned. Now i just need a new box and a nice clean install since mags aren't as in my future as i had hoped
