Posted August 26, 201114 yr What is your opinion on the SI MAG v.3 12"? What year were they made and what year did they stop making them?

August 29, 201114 yr I dunno, immature kids possibly, but I don't know the answer to your question, sorry.
August 29, 201114 yr Author I dunno, immature kids possibly, but I don't know the answer to your question, sorry. Thanks for the reply.I have a trade available for two mag v.3 but I am unsure of their age. From what I researched they are very good drivers. I was hoping somebody here would have had some experience with them.
August 29, 201114 yr They are good drivers, but some had quality issues. I have a buddy in town with a pair in a little Volvo hatchback. They sounded great. SQ oriented install, but got nice and loud. His issue was the surround was coming off the basket on one of them. I can't remember when that design went on sale. There were a bunch of delays and finally were being built in-house. I can say that I haven't seen them for sale in over a year now, but I doubt they'll make a return. It was a unique driver. So much so that if it blows you'll be up a creek without a paddle, as I doubt you'll be able to get a re-cone. To be honest I think a good quality small coiled 12" driver will sound almost as good. The only thing that set this driver apart was it's super shallow mounting depth.

I think the v4 and their newer driver is though.
August 29, 201114 yr Opps, my bad, your right, wrong sub. I was thinking the BM line. Duh! The one you're speaking of looks like an AA Avalanche, almost. I haven't heard those, but re-cones shouldn't be a problem since they are a more traditional design with a 12 spoke basket and standard 3" coil. Good luck.
August 29, 201114 yr You might want to check out the SI forums for info on that sub. There's a review of a 15" Mag on here IIRC. Might be the v3 I'm not sure.

August 29, 201114 yr From what I recall it surely wasn't SI's best move. At least from the responses who had both most of what I recall reading was that the older versions were preferred. About the time they left here though so it becomes more foggy than the previous versions.
September 1, 201114 yr The v.3 was a solid "SQL" type driver -- eg: high linear excursion / good parameter set for a nice response + also very tolerant to abuse. The v.4 Mag was an SQ driver XBL^2 enabled and fairly shallow. The BM MK3 was an ultra shallow driver also with XBL^2

My reputation went down over 40pts
September 2, 201114 yr The Mag v3 is a great sub IMO. They are older subs though. I know, I got mines before right before Fi entered the sub market. My only complaint and the reason why I run an Ascendant Audio Havoc now is that they are discontinued. I believe it's a good 4-5 years since the v3s were sold. I wanted to run a pair of Mags but couldn't get my hands on a second one. Edited September 2, 201114 yr by king alpha
September 2, 201114 yr The V3 was the best Mag, IMO. While the V4, which was the last version with the "shallow mount," had the best "SQ," the V3 was a super versatile driver that could work in pretty much any application, could get loud off of low power or could soak up a ton of power in an SPL app or loud vehicle. I miss the two I had. They were my second all time favorite drivers. I would compare them to two very capable drivers currently available and well known on these forums.
September 3, 201114 yr Author Man I wish I would have picked up a few of those Mag v3's! I haven't heard from the guy with the trade offer. Sounds like a fantastic driver!!!!!Guess I will stick with my 13w6 for now until something better is developed.
