ok so i have the pio 760mp and i was wondering if turning the loud feature on my deck is bad??...the guy at the audio place here told me that but it sounds alot better when i have it on.Is there a way to make up for this its off???...he said it would mess up my speakers alot faster if i leave it on.

much higher chance of sending a clipped signal, but i have mine on the low - loud setting (pio 770 ) and haven't had a problem, i don't kill my sub though, i also don't have a frontstage i care to burn up, yet

well i dont wanna mess up my cdt comps but they sound better with it on high i just cant turn it up higher then if i had it off....if im taking a risk then ill just leave it off.

as long as you don't hear distortion, i would use it. distortion kills speakers

I personally keep it off, better to keep a clean signal and gain up a tad then send a dirty signal

Heat & overexcursion kill speakers. Not distortion.

Not all distortion is bad, and to my knowledge, in the history of car audio, it alone, has never killed one single sub or speaker.

I know that some artists use different instruments that sound "rough", but that does not mean that the music is distorted. No type of true distortion is good. Ask any true audiophile that question and I can guarantee that they will not agree with not all distortion is bad. I have heard many systems that "don't" have distortion and they are world/state champs and I have heard systems that "have" distortion and blow speakers all the time. Underpowering a speaker is likely to damage the voice coil due to the excess heat created by distortion. This distortion, called clipping, is created when the amp is not able to supply the power demand when the volume is turned up. If you turn the volume up very high without the power to back it up, you'll end up clipping the signal coming out of the amp. The speaker will try to reproduce this clipped signal, and if played under these circumstances for any length of time, the speaker will not last very long. A member named smokedog on this forum can verify that lol

a really strong clipped signal can help in the death of a speaker. not sure it will cause the death all by itself, but it will add to the heat buildup within the coil that can indeed lead to failure. but that is an arguement reserved for it's own thread, not for hijacking nate's....

i agree with denim, i leave the loud off and gain up a bit. especially if i'm running my highs of the h/u power. no since in listening to distortion if i don't have too..

i'd personally keep it off unless yo uset your amp gains with it on.

loud button=bad idea----------kinda like bass boost to me---yuck!!!!

oh yeah----you can kill any speaker w/ distortion-----and you can kill one with too little power(since most people would crank the gains then----AKA---clipping the signal)-----think of this----

---you are jumping on a bed(you are the speaker cone)-----you crank the gains(jump higher)-----all in all ceilings are a female dog!!!

You guys can reword my response 50 million ways to suite yourself.

We can beat around the bush on orders of harmonic distortion so you can feel better.

You will still be incorrect. Distortion does NOT kill speakers. Not all distortion is bad. IE...tube amps

I JUST said heat and overexcursion kill speakers. Then 2 responses state that clipping and distortion cause heat which BLAH BLAH BLAH

Glad you agree. :fing34:

settle down there paco-----so if I play 100% distortion through a speaker it will not kill it-------and to think all those demos I did just JUST heat(when the VC temp went up only 50% from cool)-----wow-----I learned something----I feel special now

If you play it long enough the HEAT from it will. Distortion itself does not.

Settle down = let myths be perpetuated? No.

(pretends im on a game show)(dial up squeak)

Im going to use my dial a friend card.... if he says otherwise, it will be the 2nd time this week ive had my ass handed to me and ill gladly agree with you.

Neither clip or distortion are 100% killers so cannot, imo, be stated as such. Their children can be. (heat - overex.)

Underpowering has never killed a speaker either.... here we go again!

underpowering itself doesn't---it just doesn't play as loud----but most noobs set the gain too high and that is where the bad stuff happens

100% agreement with that Sir. They will gain up, and our heathen children heat and overexcursion will do the dirty work.

Good anaology above. Arguing sematics?...Why yes.... i am.

:embarassed:

I think we just cleared up ALOT of stuff for youngin's here----this should be stickied!

well, maybe not the whole thread...but a nice little review, summary type thing could be...

and dave, since ur the guru...u can write it..lol..i'll sticky it....

Well, I only read through part of the thread, so if this is simply a restatement...forgive me.

Distortion, clipping and underpowering will not damage a speaker by itself. I can send a fully clipped 100w signal (200w power) to a true 500w subwoofer and not do a lick of damage to it. It is not the act of clipping, the act of distortion or the act of underpowering that damages a speaker. It is, plain and simply, power.

As we all know, a clipped signal contains 2x more power than an unclipped signal. Now, that 100w amplifier of yours may damage a 150w speaker at full clipping. But, the damage was not caused by the clipping, it was caused by the excess power caused by the clipping, and that power exceeding the thermal or mechanical limitations of the speaker.

The only two ways to damage a speaker are by exceeding it's thermal limits or exceeding it's mechanical limits. If the power of the signal does not do those two things, it plain and simply will not damage the speaker.

Now, you could say that we are simply into a debate of semantics. But I wholeheartedly disagree. As I mentioned before, send a fully clipped signal to a speaker that can mechanically and thermally handle the power, and no damage will be done. Because power is the damaging factor, not the signal. And that is the important thing to emphasize in these debates.

well nate, looks like you have a lot to read and choose which way you want to setup your system. good luck in the system design :)
