Hi all,

I have built two 120 L cabinets two drivers per box in a dual opposed configuration (drivers facing out)

I have been told that the std Qts drivers can sound peaky ? Can someone explains to me the term PEAKY.

I have four Fi Q 15" first two orderd was dual 1 ohm but the second set I orderd later was dual 2 ohm so I will be having these changed back to dual 1 ohm as this suits my inuke amps.

So it it worth having all my drivers changed to High Qts or is there not much difference between them ??

Thanks for any input ;)

High QTS removes some seteel from the motor, decreasing motor force, it will sound more smooth, the opposite of "peaky".

And be very hard to sell down the road. IMO

Unless you're buying new subs there's no way change them to a High Qts sub. As Duran mentioned the High Qts versions have less steel in the coil gap and that cannot be machined that way once the motor is assembled and magnetized. IMHO, if you have four subs that you like the way they work why mess with it? There's a good possibility that if the change in the response was actually that noticeable that you may not like it anyway. A peaky response refers to a high peak at a certain frequency, and therefore the sub(s) are loudest at that point than at higher or lower frequencies. Depending on their placement, the size of the space they're playing in, enclosure specifications and much much more, the peak can be useful or it can be harmful to the end result your ears are hearing. That's why I said, if it sounds good to you then don't worry about it.

Hi Alton thanks for that response :)

So if I cant change them to High Qts then that would also mean I can not change the High Qts to a Standard Qts then ??

I want a clean sounding sub as I play lots more music than I do films, though I do want the subs to go low and controlled.

This is why I built sealed subs, this is my first DIY build and and never done anything like this before so is all new to me.

At the momment I have the dual 1 ohm Std Qts sub running and I love the sound it's producing EQ'd using Audyssey XT32.

If what you have sounds fine for the application that you have it in, then do not mix the woofers.

You do not want to have a standard qts and a high qts mixed in together..it'l cause some weird things with the response curve to happen.

Ok NDMstang65 taken on board.

I am sending the two Dual 2 ohm High Qts drivers back to Bladeice in UK for him to put them back to Dual 1 ohm Std Qts.

I was thinking of giving up and just put up with it but what you have said I will get these changed.

Thank you ;)

You can't change them back to normal. The motor is high qts and cannot be changed. If I'm wrong I'm sorry and I hope someone will correct me.

No.

You can not change them, they are what they are. You will most likely have to purchase new subs and sell what you have. I doubt if Am will have what you need on the shelf.

They are under warranty and it was a mistake on the order from Fi USA so Am is talking to them through e-mail.

He has the spare parts to modify (I think) to carry out the mod.

I feel for Am but I do want all the drivers to be mechanically the same.

I feel for you guys over there. I just spent 4 years in Europe. I can't tell you how many orders I placed back to the US for car audio gear for the locals because of the shit selection and ridiculous pricing over there... Good luck man...

If you can find an American military friend he can order any FI product for you at US prices and US shipping... Just food for thought...
