The 17-55 2.8 is my argument against, but I bet for $150 that does just as well in particular with video.

I could try to rationalize that I could have bought the 17-55 2.8 for a bit more than the 50 1.4 and 24 2.8 combined. That is, until you look at my metadata for the aperture of my shots in light room...

December 17, 20177 yr This is over the last year. I am trying to go through and cleanse out some times where I took 1000 photos that are essentially the same, but didn't delete all but the best. I've gotten a lot better at it over the last few months. This is a bit skewed because I shoot almost exclusively in Av and tend to only bump up if the DOF is too narrow.

Learn to shoot with a narrow DOF. Much better lesson. But get your lens calibrated if there are some issues.
