July 20, 201312 yr Well, Harry is finally comfortable enough to let us handle him. It was a very odd feeling, but awesome at the same time. Gavin loved it!
July 20, 201312 yr Well, Harry is finally comfortable enough to let us handle him. It was a very odd feeling, but awesome at the same time. Gavin loved it! After a while they will get so comfortable they will lay down in your hand. Jay used to do that all the time... Resting Not so much...
July 20, 201312 yr Those are great pics Seth! Jay looks like a monster! Jay was a monster. She was about 15 years old. Sadly she died a few years back. They can bite right? Why don't they? Yes. Depends on the breed. Some are very aggressive, but generally they are fairly docile. The Chilean Rose Hair (Harry and Jay are both Chilean Rose) are very docile, and only attack when provoked and after a ton of posturing. They are great for beginners, and people who really like to handle them. Spiders like the Baboon are extremely aggressive and will bite after just a quick show of their anger I got bit by a Rose once, but I deserved it. I kept teasing her so she would posture for my friends and she lashed out so fast I didn't realize she had attacked until after it was all over.
July 20, 201312 yr They can bite right? Why don't they?Doesn't have a need to. Arachnids are each different but many species only take on things they can handle. A person is pretty big and they don't see it as a threat. So he just chills and waits to go back to hunting arthropods or whatever their preference is. My H.Spadix scorpion on the other hand does not like to be handled, he doesn't like his little existence being interrupted by me. He tagged my ass yesterday. I got drunk at a concert and came home a little braver than i should have been. Didn't work out for me too well. Feels like putting a cigarette out on my arm.
July 20, 201312 yr Ah, so they have relatively mild poison? At least in the case of these spiders and scorpions, so it isn't that big of a deal if they do get Pissed and give you hell.
July 20, 201312 yr I don't know a ton about spiders, I've done herp rescue for years and got called in for a scorpion rescue (kinda comes with the territory) and I've been researching a lot about them. My Spadix is mildly poisonous. I've read that it's similar to a bee sting but I would definitely disagree. It was worse, but not awful. I can tell you that I won't be handling him anymore. Emperor scorpions are pretty simple to handle, and some spiders are as well, but I'm not really into spiders, my wife is terrified of them. For some reason she likes the scorpion.
July 20, 201312 yr My grandmother fell down late last night--been up since. Fortunately she didn't break anything.
July 20, 201312 yr They can bite, but it is a last resort in defense against a human, unless they are an aggressive spider. Their diet is very small. They realize the human is large and pretty much do not view us as food, so therefore will not waste their venom. Their first line of defense is to kick their hairs on a possible predator. These can be very irritating and ward off a potential predator. If that fails, they may bite. Nine out of ten times though, they just flee.
July 20, 201312 yr too many damned spiders on my monitor one of these day I'm going to try swatting at it then I'm going to have to charge y'all for a new monitor fuckers
July 20, 201312 yr You live in Texas. Everything's bigger in Texas and you're scared of some little spiders?
July 20, 201312 yr My grandmother fell down late last night--been up since. Fortunately she didn't break anything.I'm glad she is ok!!
July 20, 201312 yr Ah, so they have relatively mild poison? At least in the case of these spiders and scorpions, so it isn't that big of a deal if they do get Pissed and give you hell. Depends on the spider and scorpion. While no tarantula is deadly to humans, there are deadly scorpions. The Chilean Rose is an awesome beginning spider because they get very big, are easy to handle, and their venom is very mild. No more then a bee sting. In contrast, I had a Blue Baboon spider a long time ago that bit me, and it was awful. I struggled to breathe for several hours and my hand and arm swelled up, they cramped brutally, and felt like I had stuck my arm in a fire for 3 or 4 days. After that I never kept a poisonous, aggressive spider... it was ridiculous. But it was a gorgeous spider, especially after a molt. Just for Peng...
