I dislike them, makes it seem like you can't afford to buy your own product to sell to people.

I have very mixed feelings on it, but each brand that does it has their own reasons.

If the discount is big, and you're not in a hurry, why not ?
But I rather spend my money on something available, or something that can be delivered fast enough.

depending on the company I don't think there's anything wrong with pre sales. 

Can be used to help company's gauge interest on a product

im sure some of them cant,...  or dont want to come out out pocket 100%...

 

  some guys paid for the shippment but want to start recooping right away.. so

There are times when it benefits the customer and the company. The practice can be dubious though. I'm not even sure on the legality of selling a product that isn't in existence when some of the rules around sales involve not taking payment until you DO have the product.

Lots of those laws/rules aren't enforced for good reason, but it does cast a wierd light on the practice or presale.

Some companies I trust however and would not hesitate to buy a presale product I wanted.
