Posted March 12, 200718 yr Hello, my name is Chris and shortly I will be starting up a new business.Basically I will design and build custom loudspeakers enclosures, passives crossovers, and subwoofer cabinets.I can also aid in the design of subwoofer enclosures, if need be.I can offer a myriad of options when it comes to design, inside and out.I talked to Aaron (Denim) about introducing my services to the folks on forums. The insiration behind this business is basically the ability to pick and choose exactly what you want in a loudspeaker set. Everything will be hand built by me with care, and attention to detail. My website should be up within the next couple of days, and can be seen atwww.CustomAudioTechnology.comNow lets get down to the nitty gritty of what I can offer you.Cabinet ConstructionMDFBirch PlySlot PortingAero PortingTerminalsBinding PostsCarpet FinishStain FinishPaint FinishSpikes/FeetBox FillScrewless / Nailless ConstructionRecessed MountingCrossover ConstructionHigh End ComponentsImpedance EqualizationL-Pads1st to 4th order, Linkwitz Riley, Butterworth, Gaussian, Chebychev, Bessel, Linear Phase, Legendre2 way Passive3 way PassiveSubwoofer LPF CrossoversHere are a few pictures of my current buildThe passives there are only the LPF, and the glue on the enclosure is currently drying. These should be finished rather shortly and I will post pictures as progress permits. Thanks to all of those with interest, and especially to Aaron CT
March 12, 200718 yr Admin Since SSA is all about the DIY ideas and products, this is very fitting to our structure. Not to mention people have expressed interest in bringing on something other than just another sub or amp company. This could help expand our outlook for home audio. I personally do not know or have tried Chris' products yet, but they show promise and if they work out, would be a good addition to SSA.

March 12, 200718 yr Author I'm going to design and build 3 "standard" type sets. They will consist of progressively better materials, such as choice of wood, crossover design/complexity and enclosure design/complexity.These will be production type models. Also, I will post all builds on my website, with descriptions and what not, so if someone were interested in a set from a past build I would build it for them. The main goal of the business though is to provide options to the customer that aren't available in off-the-shelf products. Also, to do this in a manner which is specific, and direct to the customer. Basically the sky is the limit.Aaron, thank you for giving me an outlet to spread the word to folks who are interested in the DIY marketCT
March 13, 200718 yr Author If anyone has any questions please feel free to ask, as I am more than willing to answer them.I will answer your questions in the most honest way possible.CT Edited March 13, 200718 yr by CustomAudioTechnology
March 13, 200718 yr Chris, what do you think pricing is going to be like? How about turn-around time?
March 13, 200718 yr Where are you located?JimJ, I am in Pittsburgh, PA.CTIs this build posted on ca.com??
March 14, 200718 yr Author Chris, what do you think pricing is going to be like? How about turn-around time?I don't really have a price list, being that the designs are all from scratch. Prices will be based on complexity of design and build.Consultation will be provided on prices. I can almost assure you that I will not be able to offer rock bottom prices, but they will be reasonable. I would like my customers to consider the time and care put into each and every build.Turn around time, just like pricing, will be based upon the complexity of design and build. If someone were to want a simple 2 way setup, with basic crossover networks, and a simple finish on the box turn around would be around 2 weeks.More complex design could extend to 3-4 weeks at the most.Keep in mind I do not stock drivers or any parts, really, so all supplies will have to be shipped to me. Although I live within 2 days shipping of Madisound and Parts Express.CT
March 18, 200718 yr Author I apologise for not updating recently, I'm still waiting for a couple of things in the mail.CT
March 27, 200718 yr Author I tested them out today, in the enclosure, with the passives. Everything is sounding great. Midrange and high end is absolutely beautiful. The Silver Flute is actually an impressive woofer, especially in it's price range.Things still need cleaned up, and then on to laquer. Please feel free to ask questions, or to inquire about designs. The website should be up very, very soon.I still need to drop some text in, and start posting build logs.If you were to have me build you a set of speakers a step-by-step build log will be posted on the website.Thank you for your interest in Custom Audio Technology,CT
March 28, 200718 yr Now all you need is an upspiral bit and a slightly more accurate circle jig. Really nice work otherwise.
March 28, 200718 yr Author Now all you need is an upspiral bit and a slightly more accurate circle jig. Really nice work otherwise.I cut the holes a little big on purpose, for easier fitting, this being a prototype I'm going to do a lot of playing around with it.Haha, and yes, I do need to get a spiral upcut bit.I really should've cleaned up the roughness before I took pictures.M5 and topgun, thank you guys.CT
April 10, 200718 yr Author they look very nice. why didn't you stain them ?Adrian, thank you for the complimentWell, originally I was going to. But being that the drivers are black I thought black laquer would look sexy.I'm a sucker for all black man, really I am. The next set I build will probably be stained, using MDF and veneer. Birch really isn't stain friendly, it tends to come out blotchy.CT
April 10, 200718 yr the customer's always right i'm curious about the finish. i need ideas for my MT's

I'm a sucker for walnut...

All types of veneers are available.Hey, if anyone has any ideas toss them up, I'm open to all kinds of ideas.CTI've seen a veneer that looks like a patchwork of similar light colored panels (about 2" high by 6" long) and it looked amazing on a really high-end speaker enclosure. Only problem is that now I don't remember where I saw it and no one that sells veneers seems to know what the hell I am talking about. That was probably the best looking veneer I have ever seen used though.

It won't be pretty tommorow though, it will only be a base coat. CT
