what you guys think? what kinda boxes do MAW-15 or MJ-18 need? can they take more than rated power daily?

heres what i have to work with. Behringer EP-1500. its 1400w rms @ 4 ohm i think.

this is for rap music, not movies, although once in a blue moon ill watch a movie and might use it.

opinions?

*EDIT* it is 1400w rms @ 4 ohm (bridged)

or 700w rms x 2 @ 2 ohm

I wouldn't run much more than what's rated. Would rather get more cone area than drive fewer speakers into power compression.

Could you run infinite baffle? A few MJ-18's with that kind of power would be frightening :)

i dont know anything about IB. could you explain it? how big of a box, etc?

im thinkin about 2 mj18's, ill just keep the gains down, i think theyll be good with 700w rms each, what you think?

for like 80 bux each for these 18s, i dont know what other subs i would rather run....

Infinite Baffle. Basically your just using a wall to seperate the front of the speaker from the back using an Infinite amout of airspace behind the speaker. Commonly used in attics and basements.

Due to the configuration, it does not take as much power to reach the speakers suspension limits, but most typical IB installs utilize multiple large diameter drivers.

whats IB then?

i never understood IB...pics of some IB installs?

IB is infinite baffle

theorectically, it's a box with infinite volume, basically the box is so large that it has no effect on the suspension of the driver

to actually make a box in the IB alignment for a MJ-18, it will need to be atleast 27 cubic feet per sub

by not using a box at all. you just need to separate the front wave from the driver from the back. as an example you could mount the drivers in the ceiling. the front wave would come into the room and the rear wave into the attic area. the key to a good sounding installation is to make sure that the areas are very well sealed off from each other.

If you went sealed or ported, a pair of the MJ-18 Ohms would love that amp. But IB would be a different ball of wax. You could run more subs on that power.

so your saying 2 18s ported or sealed with the 700w rms each, or multiple ones IB on that same amp?

i doubt ill do IB, were just moving into this house, my dad isnt gonna let me put subs in the ceiling lol

Why not? You might impress him so much he will want you to go even bigger. :D

lol....im tellin u....theres no way im gonna be able to cut 2 18" holes in the ceiling for subs. its either a huge ass box, built from birch and stained to match my furniture, or nothing. lol

what about the subs down firing, so you dont even see the subs?

hell be like "get ur own house"

A better idea anyway. Living with the 'rents sucks.

You could have it worse, my parents have been bugging me to do something upstairs for a year now - they got pissed when I had to move my stuff back to B'burg :D Which makes me feel bad because it's a much better acoustic space than my apartment is...

Pretty common idea in home sub designs. Works fine.

Scroll down to "El Pipe-O" :D

That design with Mach 5 woofers would be scary...if you have 14+ foot ceilings.

  • Author

pics of said chair? :)

jim, i dont have that high of ceilings, in my room at least :(

and yes, living with the rents does suck, but on the flip side, look at the house im moving into.....

hells ya

somehow i get stuck with the small room!

theres a movie theater room though...no windows....might put the 2 18's in there, see how they sound :)

i asked him today, theres no attic above the movie theater, so that leaves out that option of some 18's IB in that room....

sorry dude, but i see where hes comin from, no way will rents let him cut 18 inch holes in the floor and dump substantial noise into the rest of the house. thats just obvious. lol.
