Sound Deadening

Treatments for vibration control, noise mitigation or maximizing SPL

  1. Started by Rudeboy,

Close to half the vibration damping/noise mitigation threads on other forums are debates about using asphalt based materials as a vibration damper. I’ve spent way too much time during the last 5 years typing and re-typing responses to these questions. Let’s keep it in one place to reduce litter and redundancy. This topic was my introduction to aftermarket “sound deadening”. I had a noisy car, wanted to quiet it down and started to do research. This was 2005. Several respected “authorities” were vocal advocates for asphalt. Part of this came from the belief that products like Dynamat Xtreme were part of a conspiracy to fleece consumers. Part of it was the often repeated “f…

Sweet build going on in Corona, CA using Second Skin sound and heat insulation to give the driver some relief from that HUGE engine on his back. Damplifier Pro (CLD) to kill the vibration and Luxury Liner Pro (MLV) to help tame down some of that engine noise and thermally insulate. Can you guess what vehicle is being built here?

Hey all I'm looking to add some sound deadener to my vehicle but not looking to do the entire vehicle. Just trying to get the spots on the car that will help out the most. Around the speakers? A few Strips on the outer door panel? On the hatch? Just looking to get a small kit maybe 10-20sq ft. I'm just doing a budget build and not trying to spend too much. I figure with this product some is better than none.

  5. So I think the next thing I want to do is reduce the rattle of my trunk due to my subwoofer. I put some foam and heavy duty tape between my license plate and the trunk, which stopped the rattle there easy enough. But I think most of the rattle in the trunk is from the top of the trunk. Seem to be a common issue? It is my understanding that adding sound deadening materials to the top of the trunk should reduce the rattle quite a bit, and potentially help increase the amount of bass I hear in the front? But also, wondering which sort of sound deadening material is decently priced and would do a good job? Trying to figure out cost of materials and types of things I…

  6. I have a 2017 Chrysler 200 and I have had it for a couple of months now. Before I had a 2012 ford fusion SEL but I just had one sub and not as big as a setup in my veichle and it never rattled before for me. I got into a really bad accident somebody hit me going 65 mph and I was crippled and couldn't walk for a while so that car got totalled, but this is my new one the Chrysler 200 limited and I got a new set of subs and amp too. Some bigger stuff bigger amp 2 subs now but theres some rattling in the inside like where say you'd put some Sunglasses in, in a compartment that's on the top of the car roof area and the lights in the middle of the windshield that area. Otherwis…

can MLV be stacked to provide better results? for instance if one has 1/8" 1lbs per sq/ft can you put two layers on to get double or close to double the effectiveness? if so how should the sheets be orientated? front to front, back to back, or in the same direction? you couldn't glue it together right, because that would lessen its effectiveness? when installing into doors it should be affixed around the edge but left relatively free floating other than that, right? my understanding is if its rigidly stuck down that it will lessen its ability to absorb sound.

i decided to try some spray on deadener as opposed to stick on, i gutted/cleaned my truck before application and applied multiple layers. i found sprayed in a 1/16 inch coat with about 40% overlap a single spray has no effect, two layers is enough to stop reverberation of a smaller 5X15" panel when you tap it with your knuckle and 3+ layers is needed for larger 2X5' areas. however the peel and stick products (dynamat and mesamat in this case) not only stop the reverberation but audible lower the resonance of the panel they are applied to while the spray on does not do this, or at least not to a noticeable level. i applied 6 coats of spray on for large areas with seemingl…

what are peoples go to's for damping exhaust noise and engine/valve train noise? i have already done the firewall and trans tunnel but I'm also looking to mute things at the source a bit. the high temp of the engine bay is the hurdle i think. id also like to do something to keep the heat from the manifolds, turbos, and exaust from anything else.

Trying to get some ideas on how much I need to complete my Mercedes C230 coupe. If I have a lil bit extra left over that is ok too. I have two other cars that could use some. I wanted to use spectrum instead of CLD but I'm kinda worried about the over spray. Kinda why I was leaning towards the sludge instead which can be applied with a brush. I've seen a few vids that show it isn't that much but I would need to completely tape off my dash and all the windows for the spray. Plus i have quite a few plastic parts inside that spectrum wont adhere to. I also had thot about using luxury liner pro instead of buying the MLV/CCF seperate but it was cheaper this way. Th…

After fixing the trunk , had some leftover MLV and I suddenly had an idea of putting it in the rear wheel arch. If I can block the noise at the source, then it would be more efficient right? Removed the wheel arch liner and placed the MLV around 1/3 all the way from the bottom(see pics). What surprises me is that there is more drone than before. Help me understand this , how does placing a sound barrier on the wheel arch increase the drone, I can't wrap my head around that. It seems totally unrelated.

  15. Hi need help from you guys who understands soundproofing and noise better. I've recently soundproofed the trunk and the floor pan of my VW passat. Used CAE equivalent of dynamat, CAE VB4.5 , 3M thinsulate. Firstly the road noise "seemed" louder but I'm guessing it is because I've brought the whole noise floor down too much and therefore accentuating road noise further. Secondly there seems to be pressure building up my ears and it's causing minor irritation whenever I drive. My guess is the deadening lowered the resonant frequency of the car panels too much causing it to resonate and drone. The drone is quite low frequency and it is not very audible. You c…

I have a 2007 ram quad cab. I bought a set of hertz energy esk 165.5 comps. I was just thinking about deadening my doors. I emailed don as sds I really don't want to go to that much hassle. I know that you can't seal the door and such. I just was wondering if second skin is any good to put a little deadener on the door. I have not ever deadened a door did a few trunk lids in my day but have never had this nice of front component set.
