Got new vehicle, well new to me and I beleive this to be what I will use for my project. Wife extremely unhappy that I want to do this but that is the way it is. She'll live & I'll be Boomin' !! My goal in this setup is of course "LOUD" next is hairtricks and a daily ground-pounder. My concern is port size (to small or to large) Need input on ideas on what I am putting together. Vehicle: 2002 Isuzu Rodeo 3.2 V6 Subs: 4 SA15's Amps: 2 Sundown 2000D's Enclosure will be built as a wall using trim to seal it out to the B pillar. Will be using 3/4" MDF doubled to make all sides 1.5" thick. Calculations are using allowance for .7 woofer displacement and 1 for bracing an…

  3. So I built a 3 cube box (net) tuned to 31 hz for a new, Fi SSD15 with standard options. port area is 34 in^2 sub up, port back. slot port, 11.5h x 3w x 24d box is 13h x 32w x 20d. 11 sq inches of port per cubic foot of the internal enclosure volume. I'm getting great low end, but the output begins to drop sharply at 55hz, being hardly noticeable at 65hz. I did a tone sweep and the output drops off sharply between 55-65hz, picks back up a little bit in the 70's until it begins to roll off around 90hz where i have my crossover set. My old pair of kicker cvr 12's hit this range wonderfully tuned at 40hz in the same car. I think my box and port are the wrong sizes. ive watche…

Ok guys, Who wants to be first and jump in on some sketchs/layouts for me? :-) Ok here we go, I have a Fi SSD 15 on the way with a sundown 1200d But no box to put it in. So here I am, I need some help with a box layout The dimensions I have to work with are 29" wide X 31" deep X 18" Tall. i measured from the subs to where the mic go's and got 7' give or take an inch. so 7'x4=28' gives me the 1/4 wave devide 1131 the speed of sound by 28'= 40.39Hz so i port to 30.39Hz - with cabin gain should peek @ 40.39Hz but what about the ports fireing 90degrees out of faze, ??? subs are pointed forward into the back of the seat & the ports are fireing up along the back window line. i drive a 1988' Ford F-150 x-cab

anyone ever used this box calculator before? box calculator im having trouble figuring out the port as on my cut sheet it says on a 30x17x9.5 box= 2.05 cubes. tuned to 32.34 hz that my top/bottom port is a 2"x 1.65" cut? i just dont understand this, as this number seems way too small to be an actual port. it is a 3 common wall port as well. any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hey guys, I am in the talks with Steve, the owner of subthump.com. They make some of the best sealed prefabbed boxes I have ever dealt with. They are simply amazing, the prices are budget friendly. Their main focus are on sealed boxes, because they aim at the people who are on a budget and they can mass produce. So I have been throwing emails back and forth and emphazised how much pupularity there is out there for the Sundown Audio SA8's. Now we all know these things shine better in ported boxes. My box building days are over and subthump is nortorious for squeezing out as much air space and the deepest depth for subwoofers. Here is my first subthump box. Ran this box in…

For my box for 2 12" xcons I want to something that is lighter than mdf. What are some other types of wood people use to build light weight boxes? I was looking at Baltic birch 13 ply that can be ordered from my local hardware store at my dads for around 95 shipped there. At the Home Depot by my house has birch (not baltic) 5 ply. How much better is 13 ply than the 5? I want to call the flint lumber yard and see how much their 13 ply BB is. Is there anything less expensive that people use but is also lighter than mdf?

well yesterday i took all of my max dimensions and came up with 7.1cf. and thats before port and sub displacement.... so i have a few questions about this.... 1. will this box (after sub and port displacement) be big enough (doing 1 big single chamber) & 2. what would be a good port width to go with? jaycee said tuning them @34hz would be a good start but im not sure on how wide to make the port. any thoughts???? 3. i was told that in a truck, having the subs and port both up gets the best results. is this true? im using 2 10" kicker solo x's

Steve got me interested in the idea of building a console that I could put a decent SQ sub in. My thoughts were to have something like this, Box will be fabric matched and coushioned <SP bolt to surrent center seat/console location, have brackets that fit stock storage box on it. Each end of the box will extend behind each seat for added volume, passenger side extention will be the port. OR Plastic or vinal covered glassing to look similar to the current console on the LS & LT extended cab with basically the same layout. OR But an existing color matched console and modify it to incorporate the box design. Ideas and suggestions definatly welcome. I will make a b…

  16. I am in the process of selecting drivers for a 3-way active setup in my car. I drive a small four door sedan. My design goal is to achieve a realistic soundstage. I will not be using rear fill. I will be using two 12" subwoofers for the substage. For processing duties I will be using a JBL MS-8. I had tossed the idea of using HLCD's but I realize that that maybe more difficult than what I have the patience for I do not have time to 'glass kick pods or build crazy door pods. So the install of these drivers will be somewhat simple but I realize that I may need to do a little fabrication. All drivers will be aimed accordingly. But generally this is where the placement will…

This is what I have right now Most of these number where pulled from another Tahoe build to give me a base. Ok now I just messed around with the port length until I got the tuning I wanted (33-35). I don't really get how it is longer than the box? This my first box design and is a temp. box for me to use about a month or so. Sub will be powered by a Cresendo 2k at .5 or 2ohm depending on voltage gain All the way down, and I'm going to take it easy. Any input will be greatly appreciated.

  19. I managed a 148.2 at 25Hz a year ago in a vehicle that was NOT designed for competition, let alone SPL. I simply wanted a vehicle that could get pretty loud, pretty low, and yet still sound very clear. Out of curiosity I went and got metered to see how loud it was below 30Hz. When I did so I got bombarded with "well this guy with 24 15's in 4th order got a 161 @ 25Hz" and "well this guy got a 154 with just 2 10's at 25Hz". Later some guy, who despite being from this forum was very polite and nice, comented on some of my posts. He was installing 2 18's and tuning around 30Hz IIRC. So I joked and said I'd give him my other alternator if he could beat my 148 @ 25Hz. He tol…

I apologize for asking a question that has been asked plenty of times before, but I couldn't quite find the answer I was looking for. I have an OBS Tahoe with 2 18s, subs up ports back (4 aero ports along the bottom). I need to secure the box to the floor, as it's shaking around pretty badly. My question is, is there an optimal distance to have between the end of the port and the trunk lid? I've read where people just say to put it at different distances and just try it out, but this is no help to me because A. I don't have a termlab and B. the box is moving so rapidly that it pushes itself away in a few seconds anyway. I'd rather not drill holes through the floor until I…

I'm trying to figure out the main differences between inverting a sub or flush mounting it like normal. I don't know if there is sonic difference or if the main theory behind it is to just show off the backside of the driver. I've got two DPL's that I'm going to use sealed. I was thinking around 1.5^3ft each.. but if there is a way to go smaller without sacrificing SQ I could go for that too. They'll each be on a separate channel on my ARC Audio 2500CXL (rated at a conservative 270x2 @ 4ohms). My max dimensions to work with in my trunk are 16Tx26Dx35W. Of course, going smaller would be a plus.

Alright, well as stupid as this Topic sounds, i have had a lot of questions from other people and myself. When you are building a box we all know that people don't just use 1 layer of MDF, they use 2-3 in heavy applications. In my instance, building a wall. So when i first started thinking/building my wall, i asked a older friend of mine (who is an aerospace engineer) to help me with building this. The only reason i add this in is to try and explain that he isn't a complete idiot. He also explained to me that because he works with airplanes he understands the concept of how vibrations cause things to break and how things have to be sealed. Not only that but he is very cra…

  23. I am looking to get a 15"or 18" to go into a sealed box for sq. Leaning towards the 15" at the moment. Car: 98 Mustang Location: Trunk Amp: MTX te1501d (birthsheet @ 1 ohm is 1556 rms @ 13.8 volts) Wires: 0 gauge on big 3, main battery to second battery in trunk, & from second battery to sub amp. 4 gauge to highs/mid amp from second battery. Stock 130a alt. but I'm getting a 270 Mechman and xs 3100d( will be under rear seat) when i order the sub or shortly after. If i go with the 15 the box will be 26.5L x 26.5D x 11H about 3.5 cubes before displacement. Sub will be upward firing. I'm tossing up the idea of the 18" but don't have experience with 18's. Any idea's if t…

I was wondering if the port calculater on the carstereo.com page was worth a poo? I used it to build my explorer (8 kicker comp 12"s and a 2500.1) as that worked out perfect......but i used it to build my 4runner (2 hk802sx amps, and 4 SSD 15''s loaded) and it doesnt impress me at all....so i think i figured out why.....here is the link to the page http://www.carstereo.com/help/Articles.cfm?id=31 But here is my real question...when you are calculating your port.....and you punch in all your factors and the end result tells you how long your port should be.....Does this program already remove the port displacement? Im assuming it does since you have to figure in your tota…

Well, it seems that i will be getting these subwoofers a bit quicker than i thought.. Haven't order them quite yet but i decided that getting a ported box design ready couldn't hurt. Trunk Dimensions: Height = 19" (So i was thinking box should be around 17.5" maximum) Width = 36" (Narrowest point near the back seats) = 47" (More towards middle of trunk) Depth = 36" (Need room for battery, amplifiers, ect.) Now iv never dealt with Q's before so im not really sure what i should tune the port for.. It says anywhere from 28-33hz, now i listen to all types of music so i was thi…
