Starting a thread on this based on some questions we've had... any further inquiries post them up and we'll see about getting some photos up. So... any re-cone questions post them up. ----- 1) New large wire terminal installation : It is critical to have this facing the correct direction -- otherwise the cone and spider can batter the tab and break it off. You can also experience mechanical noise if they are not aligned in this manner. * These new terminals fit much larger wire. * The black terminal is incorrect -- the red terminal is correct and set out to the side. * To install the leads first split the terminal with a small cutting pliers * Then spread the opening …

So it is a bit confusing due to several updates along the way... so the above should help out when ordering a re-cone kit. We need to know what version you have to built the correct kit. Aside from the box printing being a bit mis-leading it's not super hard to understand using the above picture. The 60 unit run of "v.2" woofers (v1.75) was only sold to a few people who knew up front about what they were -- I just had the factory put v.2 on the box so we would know what they were as we unloaded the truck. But I am sure someone will get one of them second hand. They can be re-coned to standard v1.5 parts with copper coil and hard spider. As the photo indicates the baskets …

  6. Started by JimJ,

First off, thanks to Jacob of Sundown Audio for letting me review this driver I always like listening to lower-power woofers in the 2-300W range, because these smaller drivers show that especially when musical accuracy is concerned, you don't need the multi-kW behemoths that are becoming commonplace these days. Just 300W and a small sealed enclosure is often times all you need to realistically reproduce most anything you can throw at it. For this review, I wired the voice coils for a combined 8 ohm load, with an Xover point of 50Hz @ 24dB/oct. The enclosure was slightly under 1cF, sealed. Aesthetics: You normally don't expect much in the way of build quality for subwoofe…

I know this has probably been answered before, but the search bar is pretty much useless on this forum. So if I can keep my electrical system from dropping below 13.0-13.5 volts, how will the saz take the .5 ohm load?

Yes... "Blownest" may not be a word... but I think it needs to be after seeing this woofer. I do not know who this belonged to exactly but Nick @ SI is re-coning it at my shop today so we thoroughly documented the carnage. Just had to share. * Thats not so bad, right ? * Well... that isn't normal. * Back of the surround should be gray. * Melted material and discoloration on the pole. * Wow. * Kapton wrap of the former is melted and puddled up on top of the triple joint. * That used to be a plastic former cap from under the dust cap. * The solder actually re-melted... * Some of the solder formerly from the connection point * That should be black. * Insider of…

Took some pics of the process -- thanks to Brandon for helping me get it done in a timely fashion. * Basic shell complete. We are using mostly cabinet grade Oak plywood (3/4") with some 7/8" ply as well (bottom panel and one layer of top baffle). * I like to use lots of screws... 2" long models. * Temporary guide setup to build the port straight * Outline walls of the port... ready for flexible ply. * Flexible ply installed to make the flare. * Coming together ! * Filling in across the flare with strips of wood. * Wood filler in the gaps. * Fiberglass cloth and resin applied. * Top baffles going on. * Hole cut with counter-sink * In the Jeep ! --- I installed…

Some may recall the 2008 prototype "Monster" woofer that inspired features later found in several other drivers we make today. It's been shelved for some time... but a second revision of the prototype has been started on and we'll have some testing coming up. * Compounded smooth machining on the top plate with the NS v.2 style cross drilling. I am testing more with a top shorting ring on this design -- that is not necessarily something that will see production. * Again you see numerous smooth transitions on the back plate so we don't have excess steel where it's not needed (weight concerns). Also makes it look very interesting and unique. The goal is to replicate what I…

Some of you have called and had a "new" guy answer in the last week -- Nick is now answering phones for part of the day here at Sundown. You can talk to him about most of your questions -- if he doesn't have the answer you can leave a message and Brandon or I can e-mail you back from the message but please at least leave a brief message for us. I am often not here @ the shop all the time now due to other projects so we are getting a bit more help around here!

So I got the v.1 Nightshade up to 155.9 dB today on a 16v system -- right at 9.8kw clamped power. Used a slightly different coil but the cone / spider were the bone stock Nightshade parts... no pole plug of any kind used either. Not quite as good as the NS v.2 -- which did 156.1 on 12v on the same amps / same load... anxiously awaiting putting the v.2 in there on the 16v system I am hoping for 157+ from it ! Crappy pics of the sub... but I got the score : The coil is like the NS v.2 coil but only 50mm long... kind of a mix of the v.1 coil and the v.2 coil

My current set up is (1) 15" nightshade off a 3000d @ 1 ohm. So 3000 watts daily. I know it handles the power easily, but with the warmer weather comin I am afraid I am going to hurt it because I like to ride windows down music up. Should I get the (2) 12"s or do you think I'm good with my current set up?Obviously (2) 12" subs would be more cone area than (1) 15" sub, so that alone would get me louder. I am mainly concerned about running 3000 watts to this sub to much and frying it!!

I thought it said (12) Sundown 8's so i click, expecting a goofy looking setup with a bunch of small woofers, and holy shit, its twelve nightshade 18's in an Explorer, with (6) SAZ-3000d's. Can anyone tell me anything about this setup? I was blown away when i saw it. I was just like, DAMN! Anyone know anything?

which way should i go. i have 16 mids for the MINI. all 8 ohm. 8 per door. they will be wired in pairs of 4, in parallel, making each set of 4 mids a 2 ohm load. so its either 2 100.2s, with 8 mids per amp (basically 1 amp per door) running each channel at 2 ohms or 1 100.4, running 4 mids per channel, at 2 ohms. the 100.2 is rated 200 x 2 @ 2 ohms the 100.4 is rated 160 x 2 @ 2 ohms i know the 100.2 is supposedly a little more underrated than the 100.4 is, but i found a good deal (IMO) on 2 100.2s, bnib for 370 shipped. what do you guys think?
