  1. I'm going to be building a home theater system and would like to hear some suggestions for a plate amplifier. This is what I have found: Amplifier : Dayton Audio SPA1000 Price : $338.80 http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-spa1000-1000w-subwoofer-plate-amplifier--300-809 I want to know if it will do what its rated for. and the guts of it don't look all that convincing. Any suggestions anyone has im open to. Home audio is new for me.

  2. This thing is so powerful it's hard to get started, especially since I want out of the ordinary responce, not flat. Since it has 1/120th control I don't know where to start with Q... 60/120? Thats the default IIRC. I basically need to lower everything boosting nothing as I need to create a LP effect. I want 5Hz-10Hz to be 6dB above 11Hz-18Hz. I want 11Hz-18Hz to be 6dB above 19Hz-30Hz. I want 19Hz-30Hz to be 6dB above 31Hz-250Hz. This is all guesstimation, obviousely not a 6dB drop between 1Hz increments... just to give an idea of what I am after. I may simply center at 45Hz and EQ down 24dB and vary my Q until I am happy, unless I get some good feedback. Thank you for tr…

I've been looking for a new tv to go into my bedroom. The room itself is roughly 12x12 or 12x13, can't remember off the top of my head, I havent actually had time to measure it yet, though. Primary uses will be for gaming (Xbox 360), general tv (ATT Uverse), and a few movies from my laptop and use as a monitor (HDMI). My budget would be around 5-800, depending of course, on the TV itself. I was looking for a 32"-40". Really not sure if I have the room for a plasma, though. I had been looking at the LG LE5300 32" and the Panasonic L37D2, which were what looked best to me in-store. Edit: I forgot to add that I would eventually like to do a 2.1 system a little down the r…

Alright, so I want to set a goal for myself, something to aim towards for my first project. Between saving for school and fixing my room (dog ate my carpet), i'd like to set aside a chunk of money for my 5.1 setup. If i had thought for two more seconds, i would have incorporated this into my previous thread, for the amp, but ehh. I am looking to build either four bookshelf type speakers, and a center channel, or two towers, and two rear bookshelfs, plus a center channel. I don't know anything at all about home audio. (M5 don't even post that i know nothing of car audio either, i see that coming) But, i do know my goals. This system is purely for music. I use the speakers …

Just wanted to say that I recived my pair yesterday after school, and I am VERY happy with them. The bass response is phenomenal, highs play crisp and clear, mids are smooth and not over powering. I am very happy with them. Price direct from DD isn't to bad either, worth the money I think. Go DD :bigclap:

  10. Edit That setup is long gone, but I do have a question at the bottom of this thread! To celebrate a new job, i'm going to splurge on a new set of speakers, preamp, wires, some sleeving to hide it all, etc. I'm pretty sure I know what I'd like to get, especially the bookshelf speakers, as I've heard a pair in person and absolutely loved them. The tweeters especially, light airy crisp, but on to the list. What do you guys think? Once I decide on all this, I'm going to rebuild the box for the BTL to be a little more solid, but for now it's getting bedlinered and spiked. The speakers: JBL LSR308's http://www.parts-express.com/jbl-lsr308-3-…

Ok I want to get a little 2 way HT and something to listen to music with. I really like the woodies on parts express since they are cheap and I wouldent have to build a crossover. Im just trying to put something together that is cheap I was thinking this receiver pioneer vsx-518-k I figure that way if I ever want to go 5.1 I could. Now my question is would this receiver work is it enough power to run these? What would the drivers wire down to, what load would the receiver see? Here are the woodies

I am updating all the drivers in my towers, my crossovers died so I went with what I could afford, some parts express 800hz/5000hz three way crossovers. I have a basic active crossover for the towers so they'll only need to reach down to 60-80hz at most, the BTL reaches high enough to meet them. Just replaced the dead five inch mids with sealed back GRS mids which sound far better than the price tag suggested. With that in mind, i'm planning on replacing the flimsy plastic coned 10" midbass drivers, and am not sure what to get. I was eyeing up a pair of selenium tens, as I want it to sound clean and clear, but I also would like to be able to get loud. http://www.part…

I am planning on finally stepping up the entertainment system in my room like i've planned for a while, this is going to be strictly for Gaming and Movies. Luckily for me, the foot print of the room isn't huge.. so a lot of big equipment won't be needed, I can get measurements of the room if necessary. Before I get ahead of myself with listing equipment, right now I need suggestions on the following: *Home Theater in a Box 7.1 or 5.1 surround system w/ a receiver to power them that's compatible with a gaming console such as an Xbox360 and PS3 (The budget is roughly 700.00) *Projector with a really high resolution. (The budget is roughly 1000.00) *Projection Screen 50"…

Hey, my friend recently inherited two 12" Sony Xplod subs for free, and we want to design a subwoofer for his dorm using these. He needs the line-level inputs on his amp so he can hook up via speaker wire (no LFE channel), and it needs to be fairly reasonably sized. I am thinking about this amp: Parts Express 70 watt plate amp Sound quality? obviously not key, but it would be nice to have smooth and fairly deep bass. I have lots of tools and saws, and some left over OSB to laminate to MDF if that works... I was thinking ported, but sealed may be easier to build. Here is the front view of what I was thinking in ghetto type: ----------------- -+++----------- ++++--…

I'm just beginning to learn about open baffle setups, I am planning to grab a sheet of mdf, cut it down to a pair of 2x4ft panels and trying out a set I have on hand, can anybody throw me some advice on picking speakers for open baffle? What should I be looking for? I've heard these can provide a very natural sound.

  18. I will be using 4 -8 aura transducers (50 watts rating each) in my sectional couch. I think I will start out with 4 though because from what people's reviews say, 4 should be good for my sectional. My sectional is like this. One about 7ft 3 cushion couch, one about 5ft 2 cushion couch, and one about 5ft chaise. I need an amp to power 4 or more but I want to stay pretty cheap but still have reliability. Well here are three I have found to work for my situation. What do you guys think? Nady Audio Stereo Power Amplifier XA-900 - $150 shipped. rated for 900 watts bridged at 4 ohms but I really think its like 400 watts bridged at 4 ohms. So I can power 4 of the transducers wit…

Hey guys, Im looking to get a crown xti2002 or a xti4002 Im planning to tune to around 20HZ, now I do believe the amp has a build in LPF, but I do not think it has a infrasonic filter(idk I may be wrong). Any way do I still need to set the filter if I tune that low and the amp freq response if I remember correctly is something like 20-20000 Thanks

Been using CSW Model6's in my home gym for the past year. While they were good enough for the $25 I paid for them, they have their weaknesses and roll off hard at 100hz. I've had some Coustic Design Reference 7" mids sitting around for about a decade. Despite being car audio mids, they're old enough that they actually have more home audio TS parameters. Figured I'd put them to use and gain some more DIY experience at the same time. Trying to ball on a budget here as these speakers aren't uber important, more of a learning experience than anything. Decided to go with a Woofer Assisted Wideband arrangement for a couple reasons. First I wasn't sure of the …

Built these for to go with the Mach5Audio IXL-18 in the sonotube I just finished: I figured I did 324 passes with the router. Baffles are 2.25" thick, backs are 1.5" thick. Took 5 sheets of MDF with (2) 4" strips left over. yes they are HEAVY!! Each driver is in .5 ft^3 tuned to 38 Hz. These are based on the ART array, but doubled. Tweeter spacing is not great, but we tested before I cut the holes for the tweeters, and they sound awesome. . . They are driven with an old school 380 x 2 RMS Carver amp, and it is like being at a concert in this guy's living room. these along with the 18" sub on 1000 watts is nuts!!! Brian

Hi all, I know the minimum for car audio but regarding HT setups, I'm a real newbie First of all, I want to understand some concepts: - what is the use of a pre-amp? - what is the use of a AV receiver? Only for 5.1? - is an AV receiver an integrated amplifier for 5.1? (stupid question I know lol) - what "cartridges" do? - are surround soud processors necessary? I'm pretty much set on some components for a 5.1 setup: *Blu-ray Player: PlayStation 3 *Projector: Panasonic AE2000U *Front Floor-standing Speakers: Gallo Reference 3 (pair) *Front integrated amp: PrimaLuna Prologue 2 *Center Speaker: Gallo Reference Center *Side Speaker: Gallo Reference Du

I know this is a pretty dumb question but I just can't find the answer with my ongoing research. I plan to build a pretty nice home system for my poolroom so we can listen to some good music while we're in the pool. I've researched for bass I need a plate amp so I'll go with either a Dayton or a Bash. But for mids and highs I'll grab a 4 channel amp like this http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0013CH7UK/ref=mp_s_a_1?qid=1310571806&sr=8-1 But this is the part where I'm noobish, how do I make both amps work as one? As in play the same music? Im thinking just connect RCA's but not too sure. Any help is appreciated. Thank you for your time! And for a in depth view of my pla…

Here is a recent project I just finished. From what I've heard so far, the only thing I know of that sounds better is a Magnepan system which probably cost about 10 times as much as this did. We'll see once I can give it a major listen. I'm still a novice builder and I'm not really all that concerned with the finish at this point. Its just spray on lacquer that I got at Walmart. Its made of MDF. The internals were dead on what they were supposed to be. Its a pair of Dayton DC160-8 ohm 6.5" speakers and a Hi-Vi Tn28 tweeter being powered by a single channel on a Dayton APA 150. The second tower is yet to be started. The top of the box is warped somehow, although the intern…

  25. I have my stereo reciever and sub amp across the room from where I sit when I listen, so I use the source to control volume. However, since I never use the volume knob, the system is set to max listening volume all the time and when I unplug the aux cable I get like, obscene popping. My woofer trys to leave the box and the mids punch me in the face. How can I reduce this effect so I get a quiet connect/disconnect? I'm okay with buying a part if it's not too expensive but I have no idea what to try, and my reciever is older than me, meaning, no remote to mute it when the cord is moved. I myself know the switches and don't mind shutting it down before unplugging, but I le…
