Just one more reason to do your own work whenever possible. Most shops will rape you every chance they get, $500 to change a timing belt and water pump seems very high. I've never worked on a crx before but this is a pretty simple job that shouldn't take them more than an hour or 2. Sounds like they kept the car all day and charged you for several hours labor.

I think the old ones accept 8awg and the larger ones are for 4awg

The Sundown at 4 ohm would probably be easier on the electrical system and produce a cleaner signal than the RF at 1 ohm.

I like to ground the amp to the battery negative when they are close together, I wouldn't run a ground cable all the way from under the hood to the amp in the back though.

Anywhere from 2500-3500 will really get a pair of Xcons moving. I think you have plenty of room in there, the only problem might be getting the box through the actual trunk opening. You could also upgrade to a single 15" Zcon and that would ramp up your output a good bit and require a smaller enclosure than a pair of Xcon 12s. The amp you have now makes enough power to saitisfy that beast too.
