  1. Having too small of a fuse won't cause any problems. How did you set the gain?
  2. KU40 replied to MitaG3's topic in Fi Technical
The phase control won't do anything like that. That is a relatively benign setting. Having it turned up will not hurt the sub at all. My guess is it's the cold. How do you know the amp was clipping? What noise was the sub making?
  3. Yeah I was going to suggest that a kerfed slot port is to a regular slot port what an aero port is to a regular round port. It just flares the ends and allows for easier airflow, so oftentimes you can use less port area than with straight-edged ports of either round or slot variety.

Make sure the grounds for everything (battery, head unit, amp, etc.) have a very good ground with the paint sanded off. Sometimes cheap amps pick up noise easier than higher quality amps. If the amp is all you changed and the wires and everything stayed the same as the previous amp, the amplifier seems to be the biggest suspect. But try redoing the grounds as well. If all else fails you can get a ground loop isolator to put on the RCAs.
  5. And FYI it's called transient response.
  6. That box doesn't look like it'll have enough port area. I would also be leery of net volume and tuning frequency. I'd go measure and find those things out.
  7. I just received an SAE1200v.2 and it is rated at 12.8. They must just change voltages for the different lines. At any rate it doesn't really matter. They can "rate" the amps at whatever voltage and THD they want, but that doesn't mean that's what your amp will put out. Perhaps they know the amp will actually do 1200 watts at 14.4 volts and 1% THD, but they rate it at 1000 anyways.
  8. Yes wire it in series to 2 ohms. Not sure who voted this post of yours down to -1, but I evened it back out.
  9. Well if you liked the sub, don't sell it to him. You don't have to give it to him just because he asks. Make him buy a new one if you want to keep your old one. Power compression is when so much power is put into a voice coil that it heats up and becomes less efficient at turning that power into sound. Basically, according to theory, if you double input power to a subwoofer you will gain 3db. However, as you reach the limits of the sub, it is not able to turn that power into sound as well. So take, for example, a 1000 watt sub. If you increase the power from 10 to 20 watts, you will probably see a 3db output increase. However, if you increase power from 500 to 1000 watts, in real life you may only see a 2.5 db increase due to power compression. If you try to double power again to 2000 watts, you may only see a 1 db increase over the 1000 watt level (given that the sub survives).

The first car I bought was an '88 Z24. It was pretty sweet, lots of pep even though it only had a 3 speed auto. But it was getting to the point of nickel and diming to death.

Haven't been on here as much lately, been spending more time with the GF.
  12. If you want a higher score you need a higher tune. 30 hz is ultra low for any type of SPL competition in any vehicle I've ever seen. If you are going to be competing, perhaps you'd want to look into adjustable ports or have two ports that you can interchange, one with your 30 hz daily tune and the other with a 40+ hz SPL tune.
  13. x2 the rear output is full range and not made for subs you could use it but you would get better performance and sound out of it by using the sub out I would imagine on that headunit the sub output is full range as well. It's just that the sub output probably has certain adjustments that can be made from the head unit, like subwoofer level or some bass frequency range-specific EQ, that would make it beneficial to use the subwoofer out.
  14. The first question that should be asked is how big is your alternator?
  15. The acoustic resonance of what? Your car? The box? I don't know what "the way your output of your subwoofers or the sound" means either. I would assume you mean the acoustic resonance of your vehicle, and yes it plays a part in how the sub sounds because environment affects frequency response.
  16. This is untrue. In fact, the more subs you have, the less power you have to feed them to keep the same output. One 15" on 1000 watts is theoretically the same as two 15s on 500 watts. To the OP, perhaps you should figure out if you want ported or sealed. If you listen to more rock I'd probably lean more towards sealed. But I'm not sure if you'll miss the output in the 20-50 hz range that the ported box would boost for you. But if you keep the BL obviously it's not recommended to go into a sealed enclosure.

Adjusted work schedule today, 9:30-3, due to the snow still on the ground and making things a bit messy. Sweet. I took yesterday off because of the weather/road conditions. Plus my gf had just gotten home the night before from 3 weeks in her hometown so I wanted to spend the time with her. Fun day. We watched District 9, which was quite different than i was expecting. It underperformed by a good bit, IMO. I think it could have been so much cooler.

The last couple days when I've tried to get onto the site it hasn't worked 2-3 times. After trying to load for a second it just stops loading on a white page and says "done" down on the bottom status bar. I figured they were doing maintenance or upgrading things or something. So maybe that's doing that for other people as well.
  19. One of the problems with this statement is that getting to 170 or 180 db has absolutely NOTHING to do with luck. At that point you know what the heck you are doing.

You guys know this is in the Fi technical section, not the newbie sign-in, right?

  22. You can always limit the power an amplifier puts out.
  23. Run the 9 gauge to a distribution block, then have six smaller outputs. You don't want to be half-assing it and just butt-connecting power wires together with one input and a couple outputs.
  24. The wave out of the sub in back and the wave out of the port in front won't be in phase because the one in front just has to move into the cabin, whereas the wave from the sub has to go back into the trunk, bounce off something, then go back forward into the cabin. It most likely won't cause cancellation because subbass frequencies have too long of a wave length, but the waves just won't reinforce each other quite as well.
