Apple's always been known for its amusingly-conservative disclaimers (you can't use iTunes to "design a nuclear weapon," for example) and it looks like the products-liability team at the Fruit has had their way with the iPhone SDK agreement as well, inserting a provision specifically prohibiting developers from creating apps "marketed for real time route guidance; automatic or autonomous control of vehicles, aircraft, or other mechanical devices; dispatch or fleet management; or emergency or life-saving purposes." Yep, that's right -- no real-time route guidance (or, uh, fleet management) allowed. That'd be a huge bummer -- except, of course, that TomTom has already come out and said that its app is ready to go on the iPhone.

Got 29 MPG's in the Saturn! thats more than my new truck and old truck combined.

Hopefully I can squeeze some more out of it. Possibly a little tune up.

My buddy told me he gets 36MPG out of his Sentra. Said he did a couple things and messed with the duty cycle on the injectors. Got to see if I can poke some more info out of him

I get 30-33mpg in my Spec V all the time. Hope he can get 36 out of a 1.8 or 2.0.

My saturn is a 1.8 as well (I know there different just saying they are the same size). I'd love to be able to see a solid 30. EPA rates it from 32-34.

I did my time in a refinery with an ambient air temperature of 75*C (167*F) ... so I hear ya. In coveralls, thermal long underwear and long sleeve shirt, and respirator/hardhat or SCBA, nonetheless.

Can't say that I would coast in neutral in a vehicle for any extended period of time. To my knowledge the transmission fluid pump is driven off of the input side not that tail shaft so I would think that if you did that you might not get enough fluid pumped through the tranny and could shorten the life of it. Also you run the risk of accidentally slipping it up into reverse and fucking things up. Sure you may be careful 99% of the time on that one, but is saving a little bit of money on fuel really worth the extra risk on fragging the transmission? Now on the new fully electronic controlled ones, I don't know if it will even try to slip into reverse while going that speed.

I found that caosting in N is much more effective than coasting in D, atleast in the case of my truck

2002 GMC 5.3l:

- DFCO (Deceleration Fuel Cut Off) is only useful if you can engine-brake for 30 seconds or more. It takes 6 to 10 seconds to get into DFCO but does hold it down to ~1100 rpm.

- Due to that DFCO issue, using N is far better than coasting in D at any time. Not only does coasting in D slow the vehicle down, but even with my foot off the gas the computer must inject more fuel at higher RPM to keep the air/fuel ratio correct.

- While stopped (at traffic lights and such), idling in N uses a very tiny bit more fuel than idling in D, but is worthwhile.

And curious, where was this information found and how did they come to these conclusions?

I need a manual bad, and would have to stay with a small car for now. So that 1.8 C class could be had for a decent price, but then again I could just replace the Honda with a newer Honda for a little while. But the current Honda is doing us well.

One of my co-workers just picked up a Honda Fit. Seems like a nice little car to run around the city in - especially at that price. I wouldn't go buying a car you could call "cute" ... but they seem to be nice little basic cars.

Still rather have a couple year old MB/BMW/Audi to shuttle kids around in, though.
