External since it will be connected to a laptop and it will store mostly media.

Honestly I recomend a media external HDD enclosure. China makes bajillions of them. Then you can put what ever quality HD in the box you want. A good Western Digital or seagate unit.

Depending on application, absolutely. Depends on what you are armoring yourself against. Stopping 9mm-.223 fire and moving light gear quickly would need a much different armor than stopping impact from busses running you off the road and being ready to take claymores and .50BMG armor penitrating sabots.

My brother in laws little case for his 1BT westerndigital was ~20 bucks, but he can bring it with him and play back movies or music view the outputs directly on the HDD case.

It's not built for war, but it ran the HDD without a hitch for storage or play back and at 20 bucks a pop you can buy 2 and have a back up and then not have to pay a jacked up price for the WD external. He somtimes just pops the HDD in his tower if he needs fast fast access to move many gigs at a time. I wish I had a link to where he got the case.. normally I'm not a fan of the cheep china gear but this wasn't garbage and impressed me at how versitile it is.
