Posted August 6, 201015 yr Hello all...my 1st post here...Just wanted to share some excitment in my audio world...I have had a little mishap with my 15 year old SUB. Orion 12D.She no longer works...So I have ordered a ICON 12" form Marc a SSA (what a great guy!!!) He suggested I go with an ICON as I wanted an XCON.I trust his opinion totally so I ordered it.Here's what my setup looks like:...This of course is my car...The trunk liner removedThe spare and accessories now gone...The preparation of the 1" wood flooringThe box finished...How it fits in the trunkThe amp and carpet installed in the backThe sub box installed with the side pieces installed on a hinge so I can fold them inwardThe final outlook...everything installed and ready to goHere's my setup and was wondering if any of you can tell what my box is tuned at. (I have no idea)My box size is (Interior dimesions)20x23x8 Port is 2x10x20I am really wondering if the ICON 12" will sound any good in that box.any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all in advance
August 6, 201015 yr SWEET job on the trunk!!! Looks super clean.Where did you get the grill? I am shopping for some and like that one.BTW Welcome to SSA.
August 8, 201015 yr Author Hey guys,Thanks for all the kinds words and the welcome. The car is a dream to drive...it's 375HP and 333LB-ft tourque0-60 in 5.3secLexicon 17 speaker sound system...here's a review if you're interessted:http://www.hemagazine.com/Lexicon_Hyundai_Genesis_Audio_SystemI was hoping to get answers to the following questions I had but maybe the pictures were distracting and no-one could see my questions (in the original post)Here it is again...below:Here's my setup and was wondering if any of you can tell what my box is tuned at. I think it was a futureshop in Canada Edited August 8, 201015 yr by DD51
August 8, 201015 yr Looks like you're tuned right around 30-31 hz which is good. Here's a link for you to check this stuff yourself: PORT Size calculator. Box is on the smaller side but I'm sure it'll sound good. Don't think you'll have to worry much about port noise either. The only way to know for sure is hook'er up and crank it! August 8, 201015 yr Awesome article!! I bet you are lovin' that car!!!!!!!!We are pretty good at going straight to the pics, Hehe. Thanks for the awnser on the grill. Atleast now I have another style to look for, cause Finding a DeeP DisH 12" mesh grill is proving difficult. Plus the one you have looks solid.

It was placed on August 1st and haven't heard back yet.I'm OK on waiting but any update would be greatly appreciated.Just dying to place the sub in my car and letting her rip. It's also very hard right now with NO sub and driving around listening to music without the deep madness my head needs.Regards,

August 21, 201015 yr Author I just received word that the sub made it to Canada safe and sound. Awaiting response...and photos Marc,I did indeed get the sub yesterday morning.I've played all day with it yesterday and have been doing at shit load of reading. My concern was that I installed the sub and went in town to see a customer.Ride was about 45 minutes, of course I blasted a couple of songs. When I got there I got out of the car and went and touch the sub and amp and they were both hot.The sub had a little smell (I guess this is normal?)So on I went searching and found shit on clipping.Boy have I read a lot the last 24 hours...Anyways, I found that I need to adjust my amp and this is how I did it:Downloaded a 0db 40hz test tone.Plugged my digital meter in the speaker leads of the amp. (I don't have an oscilloscope)Put volume at 26out of 35 and let her rip.BTW my system has 0 distortion at full blast volume (35)I adjusted to 34volts ac. (1200watts connected to 1ohm)anyways, that's what I read to do...Boy what a difference in sound...very clean!BUTShit... no power!!!!It is so much lower in volume...I guess I need a stronger amp?Anyways I'm very happy with the sub...it sounds better than my Orion 12D I had. (Quality wise)Of course I'm comparing a 12year old sub to brand new!!!I will put pictures up with a small review soon. Thanks for everything but I may not be done buying shit from you.A happy Canadian (old man) customer...

Basically, the amplifier will only reach "full power" with a 0db signal, which hardly ever happens in music. And in the range where your music spends most of it's time, the amplifier is outputting much less power. The two options are to set the gain by ear, or use a test tone recorded at a level lower than 0db, such as -3db, -6db, or -10db.

It may take a little bit of playing around with it on different songs to get it right, but most songs are not recorded at 0 db, they are usually at like -5 or -7. Just keep an eye on it and make sure it's not clipping/distorting.Impious beat me to it lol Edited August 21, 201015 yr by ulrisa
August 22, 201015 yr Author ulrisa and Impious,Thank you both for the tips and feedback, I really appreciate it.I have increased my pot a little and it's ALOT better. My pot goes from a 7oclock position to a 5oclock position. It was originally set to around 2oclock position.I was freaking cause after adjusting with a DMM it was now at 11oclock position.I have it now at around noon position.I'm so afraid of raising it now...I wish it could be a little louder but am too afraid to play with it.Maybe someone can guide me or put my mind to ease abit...I am running my amp through the sub wires of the original sub (that's disconnected now) with a line converter. This line converter has 2 pots on it ( I guess one is for the left and the other for the right channel)I've set them both to about 3/4 to full. That's what the instructions said to do.Can this be adjusted? If yes HOW?Many thanks in advance.
August 22, 201015 yr A lot of newer cars have a feature where the stock amps limit power or limit lower frequencies to the stock speakers past a certain volume so you won't blow the speakers and reduce distortion. That could be why it doesn't sound as loud as you think it should be.Any wheel/tires plans? Some black face, white lip rims would look real nice
