Hi all,

A friend of mine has just blown its XXX 18" for the second time ! He doesn't know why !

The first time, he knew he had a very small box with a slot port, and he did not know the tuning of the box. He was playinf at full tilt with no ssf on !

Amp is a MTX te 4000.

He has several batteries, and the big 3 done, now.

I ordered a recone kit for him from PAP. They sent a kit for a 15" sub, and then the right one. (So I have free kit at home, looking for a sub !).

After a few weeks, he was really satisfied, but on the 21st this month (it was music day in France) he told me he blown it again. This time the wire that runs on the spider has gone into smoke. The sub is a DVC2 playing at 1 Ohm.

The ssf seems to be set right, and the box is now bigger (still too small IMO), tuned to 30 Hz according to him ! I don't know how he can say 30 hz, but ...whatever !

Do you have an idea about what happened ?

What can he do to avoid blowing its sub ?

Thanks

How is the gain set? by ear? dmm? o-scope?

Does he listen to any bass boosted music?

Just assuming too much power, whether it be clipping or not.

XXX are 10k rms I just read.It could have been a voltage issue if he is running a stock alt. They look nice with the quad 1 ohm vc.

Sounds like a case of clipping it to death to me. What did the previous voice coil look like when you reconed it?

I think (not my sub) the previous VC was burnt to death !!! Clipping for sure !

He listen mostly to rap and reggae songs with a LOT of bass, too much bass ! If a song does not have a huge bass he won't listen to it.

The gain is set by ear, I guess so.But he keeps telling me the gain knob is very low on his amp, and on the h u the bass level is set very very low. Hard to beleive.

I am asking because I don't want him to say the recone kit was a POS !!!

I think 10 000 watts rms would destroy this sub ! Another friend has just blow one last week ! for the same reson.

If the previous coil was burnt to death then he's clipping the shit out of the sub trying to get more out of it. If he wants more he needs another amp. If he doesn't want to invest in another amp then he needs to set the gain correctly (not by ear) and be happy with what that amp will put out or try different enclosures to up the output. Otherwise he'll blow it for a 3rd time in the very near future and be crying again.

with the leads burning the spider up like that it seems to be just a pure case of over powering, the leads are too small for the amount of power being sent thru them,

less power or put custom leads on it

Could also be the amp shooting DC up the coils..

This is also a good point, often overlooked :P

I'm not sure how you can test for this, I'm guessing you could use an o-scope and look for a solid line among the sine wave.

Actually the sine wave will have what's called DC offset. On the display of an oscope there's a grid. The center of the grid is the "zero" line and with a proper output the sine wave will be centered on that line with equal amounts of the wave going above and below the line on AC. When you have some DC going out as well the line will be lifted (or lowered if it's negative DC voltage) off the center. How much depends on the voltage scale your scope is set to and how much is riding out with the AC signal.

Just FYI for anyone who cares.

Another possible problem he could have with the amp is that the filtering caps on the output of the power supply section are going bad and it's getting some of the high frequency switching noise from the power supply riding out on the output as well.

Thanks for your answers. I don't think he will try to test anything with an o'scope, but who knows ?!

I'll send him the link to this thread.

I hope he'll find a good translater !

someone blew a subwoofer? I didnt know subwoofers could be blown. They offer a recone kit? Why would such a kit be offered? I could see giving 3000 watts to a 500 watt driver... but 4000 watts to a 10,00000 watt driver? So it blew because he ONLY had 4,000 watts to give a 10,000000 watt driver then? Hmmm. interesting. Recone kit. Who knew?

Sounds like tinsel leads are the weakest link.. yet again.

I would contact FI or PSI about reconing this sub..

FI uses some damn good flatwound leads and PSI can get u hooked up with Quad leads as well...

no, not one bit. but if you read every single reply Ive gotten here over the last few years from "reputable" members, you would then have to admit that they go a little far with me sometimes.

k

Ignorant owners blow subs...unintentionally. Don't help him if he doesn't want to set the amp up right because he may go and say you got him a bad recone and give you a bad name. If he wants more output, he needs to get a new box built.

Straight up real talk!!!

wow that sucks. but im sure its something messed up on his part and not yours.

Are those subs too weak ?

Another guy here have blown his xxx 18" too ! I will try PSI if possible this time, for him.

Thanks.

They are relatively weak, compared to other high powered drivers out now days.

Defintely when SS doesn't have the best quality control. I've heard of plenty just having manufacture problem failures, as gluejoints failing and such.

And they sure aren't 10000RMS either. Maybe for a one second burp it will take that, but that's nothing special at all these days.

Instead of having to look it up myself, what are the basics with them... 3/4" or 1" slugs? 3 or 4? Diameter? Coul... 3" or 4"? Flat copper... 4 layer or 8 layer? What is the Bl on these badboys... I'm no wizz with Thiele/Small but just wondering overall motor strength. I assume several stiff spiders... 9" or larger on a TC Sounds basket?

I can't tell you that.

I'm not a specialist at all !! And those are not my subs.

I only know 2 people with them, and both have blown their subs. It may be users errors, but it was never on 10 000 rms, but on 3000-4000 w rms, and in small boxes for 18" subs.

I sold my SSA Icon 15" sub to a friend. He gives it a lot of power from a DD m something amp, and the sub has never smelled nothing and still runs fine like new !

Another one is running 2 xcons on 4 Sundown saz 1000 for one year with absolutely no problem, no smell, nothing wrong. I hope my btl will last long !

I'm sure thse SS XXX are not so well built. And they are not cheap : I can get 3 (to 4) Xcons for the price of 1 XXX !!!
