well yesterday i took all of my max dimensions and came up with 7.1cf. and thats before port and sub displacement.... so i have a few questions about this....

1. will this box (after sub and port displacement) be big enough (doing 1 big single chamber)

&

2. what would be a good port width to go with? jaycee said tuning them @34hz would be a good start but im not sure on how wide to make the port. any thoughts????

3. i was told that in a truck, having the subs and port both up gets the best results. is this true?

im using 2 10" kicker solo x's

Edited by Lantz

It might help if you include the drivers your using, the size as well.

He has Solo-X's a month ago, so probably not anymore

Either way, I'm not up for guessing games. :)

I never gave you box recommendations or a frequency to tune at, dont get me involved in your failure. :suicide-santa:

That's plenty of volume.

Download Winisd if you don't have it, create a new driver profile, fill out all the T/S specs for your kickers.

Make a new project, fill everything out, go to the ports tab, pick either square (slot port) and plug in some numbers for width and height, or use round for aero ports. The program will automatically calculate the port length required for the tuning you picked earlier.

Also, you will be able to see the port/vent mach, try to have that number in green. The lower the number, the less port speed and turbulence you'll have, thus less port noise.

i went on the12volt.com and they have the calculators set up to find port length and box volume. does this winisd cost money or how does it work? iv never heard of it before

WinISD is free.

Free and much better than just using the12volts calcs.

You could use the12volt, but how would you know you have enough port area?

And how would you calculate port displacement for NET volume if the port length itself is dependent on the net volume?

Just some food for thought.

As Duran said, Winisd is free. Download, install. Look up T/S specs for your driver and plug it in. Read the article / how to / tutorial if you need help figuring it out.

If you can't figure this out or don't want to spend the time to figure it out, contact someone that designs enclosures and pay them to do it. I've heard great reviews for Ram Designs.

Either way, do it right, or don't do it at all.

you have a point sir. i will download it tomorrow and give it all a whirle

Hell Lantz, my bad, I thought you weren't gonna do this box build.

I'll send ya the design before the weekend.

Get Google SketchUp (it's free) so you can view the design.

side note- cut Lantz a little slack guys. He's new to the game (compared to most of us)

and is trying to "bass on a budget". He may ask some questions that to us may seem dumb.

He's trying to learn, (the hard way sometimes) but all in all at least he asks question instead of assuming.

thanks jay-c. i appreciate it. iv only been in the whole audio game for just over 2 years now. its my favorite hobby haha

Awfully elitist don't you think? Nobody EVER "does it right" on their first try.

He's not dumb. Just eager and uneducated like we all started.

true. i want to start the build for the solo x's this week. im going to get a sheet mdf tomorrow. and hopefully one sheet will do the whole job.

Did you download Google SketchUp?

I'm going to draw up the design right now.

I'm simply stating: don't slack when designing the enclosure, or spend the money and have someone do it correctly. I'm not being an Elitist...

I apologize if I personally offended you. :roflmao:

If you installed new speakers, you wouldn't just twist the wires together and wrap some electrical tape on it, would you? Spend an extra five minutes and solder everything.

If you were designing a ported enclosure with a 35hz tune, but didn't bother to account for driver & port displacement, think you'd still be near your 35hz?

I'm not being a dick, all I'm saying is: take your time and do it right the first time... or don't bother doing it yourself.

no your good. iv never built a box this big before so it will be quite an adventure for me.... haha

well jay-c76 designed my 2nd enclosure for the ASTRO and it IS AWESOMENESS! I am SO TUNED IN to see how this turns out! On a side note I feel if JAY-C76 designs an enclosure that potentially starts to shatter your window he should be held partially responsible... ILL be sending my SAFELITE repair SAFELITE replace bill with a <^> attached!
