Hi all, just putting together my first setup to go into a 2007 VW R32.  Just ordered a Q1-1200D amp to go with a second hand JL 10W7.  I've just finished the box for the sub and i've already got some 14ga OFC speaker wire.  Do you think this will be ok or do I need 12ga as recommended by SQ? Sub is rated at 750W RMS.

You'll be just fine with 14g wire, as long as the wire isn't ridiculously long.

Be sure to set the gain and filters properly as to not overpower the subwoofer and/or bottom it out.

I got these amps too, what do you set the lpf on? I noticed the higher I go the sub gets a bit louder. I don't have the smd crossover setting thing but I put my lpf at 12'oclock and subsonic filter at 9oclock. Does this sounds about right?

Check out the amp settings we suggest:

 

Amp Setup Instructions  

Amplifier basic gain and crossover setting instructions for:

AQ750D    AQ1200D     AQ2200D    AQ3500D.1

1. Set LPF to 100-125

2. Set Subsonic to 30-35

3. Set master/slave switch to Master

4. Set the gain on the amp to min(all the way to the left)

5. Install the remote gain and turn 1/2 way up (the midpoint on the dial)

6. All EQ settings and bass controls on the HU to O (Alpine HU's subwoofer up on some models needs to be turned up)

7. Turn HU volume to 3/4 and insert CD (perferbably a recorded CD and not an mp3  At this time you will have no output because the gain on the amp is turned down)

8. Slowly turn the gain on the amp until the clipping indicator on the remote starts to flicker as the frequencies in the music change. Do not allow the the clipping indicator to glow solid or flicker continuously on constant music or stay red on transients. This will lead to a burning coil.

I agree with you but the factory manual says 100-125 when setting the lpf.

These amps are weird. I normally set it in that region but on these amps, if I set it there, the output is very low. It's starts to get louder and punchier as you turn the lpf up. Right now I have the lpf set to like 10oclock, and my gain is at 2 o'clock. Lol. It clips but minimal. But I'm gonna try this after work and see if I get better results.

Do you guys suggest I use a test tone or a heavy bass song to set it? If a test tone, what frequency. I got mines in a 4.3cuft tuned to 36 hz with 86 Sq inches

I use a test tone of 60hz. The reason the sub sounds better with a higher lpf setting is you are letting it play tones that your front stage 

 

should be playing. This just makes the woofer play sounds that you would not normally hear from it which makes it sound better.

Because you never go past 63hz doesn't make it right dude.

We suggest setting the Low pass high because most people will not have the mids to fill between the 90-100 range. Also, if your box is tuned at around 35hz a 90lpf is perfect. It allows for you to reach from the mid 30hz - up.

When it comes to how your system sounds it is all based on personal opinion but what we suggest is because we know what will sounds best to most people who are just installing a subwoofer into their vehicle and nothing else.

10 gage wire off the subs and turn the lpf tell you can't breath. Should be set then.Lol
