Greetings and salutations beings of the internet. I come bearing random thoughts ramblings and a build log. This will be version 3 of my 2004 suburban. The setup:

Sony XAV-701HD
Stevens Audio Full Size Horns
Beyma 8BR40 8" Mids
Arc PS8
Bazooka MGA series Amps
Stereo Integrity DS4 18 sealed 6cuft

03_zpsa8d8448b.jpg

This is also the simplest iteration. I employed the KISADUWDATTDT method: Keep It Simple And Don't Upgrade When Done And Tune The Damn Thing. :) Just a little FYI the horn install happened a few years ago. This a compilation of a build that spanned a few years. :P

Up first are the horns. You've seen one you've seen them all but just in case here is a pic. :)

02_zps178ef7e2.jpg

I designed in CAD and had CNC plasma cut some brackets.

05_zpsf95f3e33.jpg

I did a little prepping of the horn bodies before installing.

Here is the passenger side mocked up in place.

The final install.

Stay tuned for moar updates. :)

I made some kick pods that can actually be kicked, but I won't appreciate it if you do it intentionally during a demo. :P

This is the vision with the little Beyma 8BR40 in place.

Layed up some glass.

20160212_214708_zpsmwlg3pp5.jpg

Made some kick ass rings with some simple steel mesh grills. I'm using some threaded wood inserts and 8-32 button head cap screws to hold everything down.

20160425_204423_zpsk6fu2gqq.jpg

After some blood, sweat, and many many many tears I got some pods made.

20160504_201424_zpsliaay19l.jpg

After a fresh coat of rubber undercoating I mounted the pods to the kick panels.

Got me a little something extra for the PS8.

20161001_091830_zpsrn9wa1r7.jpg

Drew me up a little housing to mount in the dash.

Absolutely fantastic!!

So how's the tuning going?  Are you liking the PS8?

I want to know how it sounds, glad to see you back here.

Thanks. Tuning is slow going. Part of it is making sure I get good measurements. Then tackling the EQing and making sure it does whats intended. Definitely and art for sure.  I'm digging the PS8. I bought it second hand for a good deal, that's why I went with it. I wish it had shelf filters and all pass filters, since that's all the rage now in the ESSQUE circles. :D For now it gets the job done. Thanks for stopping by.

Ha ha. It's sounding good. Still needs work, but it's getting there. Glad to be back. :)

At this point everything is up and running. Horns are highpassed at 1600hz 24db/oct LR. The mids are playing 80hz to 1600hz 24db/oct LR at both ends. Subs are lowpassed at 80hz 24db/oct LR, no subsonic filter. The highs are non-existant with out some eq. A buddy recommended a special filter Veritas used to offer for the horns they once sold. Here is the info I was given.

IMG1185451398_zpsfqav6r0y.jpg

This the specifics on the filter.

This is the modeled response of the filter by my buddy.

Here I go trying to calculate the input impedance of the Bazooka amp.

20160731_201006_zpsmvbioddz.jpg

After using this calculator I came up with 10k input impedance. Close enough. :P

Here are my little filters.

This was the response of the horns before the filter. Left black right red.

This is the response of the horns after the filter was installed.

On to more tuning. :)

Things happen. Sadly one of the channels on my little Bazooka 4 channel started cutting out. I had to swap it out for another amp I had laying around, JL HD600/4. :D

Before with the Bazooka

20160610_182614_zpshfs9w7is.jpg

After with the JL amp

20161016_181145_zpsebk9btqn.jpg

Luckily the input impedance is the same on both amps so no change to the horn filter thingie. I did have to reset the gains on the amps and the PS8. The JL has a small range and low voltage requirement for the low level inputs so I had the lower the signal at the PS8 since the Sony has 5V pre outs. :/ Back to tuning. :D

At this point in time Stereo Integrity discontinues the DS4 line and closes them out at a I can resist price. I pick one for just in case. :) Unfortunately storage space has become a preminum and I say eff it, I can cut another hole in the box and run two. So much for the no upgrades. :P

Moar sub pics.

20160610_173915_zpsqzuqcp4h.jpg

20160610_173844_zpspmaxohwe.jpg

Everything back out.

20161104_141834_zpsl5kbumsj.jpg

Fingers crossed that I don't eff it up. :D

20161104_143016_zpsslj1eclb.jpg

Now its a box for two.

20161104_161108_zpsj4o6ujed.jpg

All back in.

20161106_153045_zps7duyoiik.jpg

The subs are dual 2 ohm coils. The amps put out 1k at 2ohms or 750w at 1ohm. So I take a hit in the power dept but gain in the cone area side. All in all its a wash. :D I need to start tuning.

Goodness its a rebuild during a rebuild while doing the initial build. Keep it coming.

Bad ass install, great work man!

Ha ha, sorta. This build is what I've been working on for a while. The build log is playing catch up. :)

At this point the build is current and up to date and ready for the 1st tuning session. Up first is an impedance sweep of all the drivers in their installed enviroment.

The driver side horn

The passenger side horn

HR_1_zpsbtrz00rl.jpg

The driver side woofer

The passenger side woofer

WR_1_zps3n5dlj1y.jpg

Lastly the subs

Now that we know what to expect here is the baseline measurement.

Red = Right/Passenger Side
Black = Left/Driver Side

SUBURBAN%20BASELINE%20MEAS%201_zpsvns9xe

Wow, well with that said, here is what I went with PEQ wise on the PS8

PS8%20GEQ%20FINAL%20TUNE%20SESSION%201_z

This is was the final measurement looks like.

SUBURBAN%20FINAL%20TUNE%20SESSION%201_zp

So far so good, but needs more tuning. :)

Very nice setup Brother.

Specifics are nice, but in all, it's all about the human ear.

Wish I could hear it !!!
