SPL & SQ / Fabrication

Calculations, Concepts, Designs, Theories. All General SPL Or SQ Questions Can Be Discussed Here.

For my next set up I'm thinking of running an active 3 way system. I would like to run an Sax-125.2 or a Sax100.4 whichever is better for a 3 way setup. My budget its slightly fixed anywhere from 200-250 for the 3 way set up. This will be going into a 4 Door Explorer. I typically listen to anything from Rap to death metal to spoken word; I would like a system that is well versed and able to transit from genre to genre with ease. Also to be able to reproduce it accurately but also i need something loud to be behind 4 15's. I am able to fabricate things; i have fiberglassed and know how, also i have access to many tools. I need to start off finding Tweeter, Midrange, and a…

  2. some one give me a little feed back! ive always thought it was best to give each sub its own chamber then slot port in the middle? lately ive seen alot of boxes where the speakers are pretty much sharing one chamber and L-ported towards the drivers side firing back, is this more effiecient sounding? or is this done so the box can fit better? i have a 2002 accord and i want this setup to be good DAILY. dnt care so much for SQ but more so SPL. meaning SPL to the ear ill doubt i ever see a meter. THANKS FOR ANYTHING GUYS

what you guys suggest? i mostly hear 2.5 net for the 12. power is 2 kx1200.1's strapped, so at least a good 2400w rms. ive already taken all the measurments and everything, this is about 3.8 gross, so i may shorten it a little, leaving me more room for amps on the top. port- what should i tune to? its for rap music. slot? aero? heres sorta what its gonna look like. the yellow will be double 3/4"

I picked up a tdx 15 dual voice coil 2 ohm for $100 in a pre-fab box. 1200 watts rms. Hooked it up and found out the box is broke. It sounded like Donald Duck getting kicked in the nads. I would like to build an spl box for it but after googling my fingers off I can't seem to find any box spec recommendations. I was hoping to find a simple slot port build or something because I am still a noob and don't quite understand the Qs's and the other mysterious letter number references on the tech sheets Any ideas or opinions would be appreciated. I prefer spl over sq.

  6. I moving up from an old 200 rms orion 12" sub to 2-fi ssd's with 1600 watts to them ( or what ever my Soundstream will really put down. lol ) Now looking at the follow 2 box designs from here, ( which is super sweet that you guys posted these! ) Box 1. 12" xcon ported Box 2. 12" icon ported Outside of what appears to be an extra dolly of vertical bracing and total port area are the pretty much the same. Of course the overall dimensions are a bit different, but they have the same internal volume and tuning frequency. So which box is better? More port area make a difference when tuning is the same? Any in-site is much appreciated. Got the email today that the subs shippe…

So im making a thread that may help people in the future on different enclosures for different applications. So what are the physical differences in an spl enclosure compared to a daily driver enclosure or sq enclosure? What separates the two into different catagories? for example does a box that is bigger and tuned high make it a spl enclosure or vise versa? Thanks in advance for your expertize.

Ok so speaking purely visually, i understand a basic motor and the LMT but XBL^2 i've never seen a good pic of, what exactly is it and how does it differ? what pics i have seen, i can't tell the difference from a normal motor. Now, someone explain in some more depth for me, or point me to a good link, the way the magnetic force helps hurts the voice coil movement. I'm not understanding why a lateral force is necessarily a good thing. Next, why is the cone concave instead of convex? Has anyone ever experimented with flipping the cone over? What affects would this have on the frequency? Obviously i'm procrastinating studying and my mind needs anything else to think abou…

Hello, I was wondering whether it was possible to use two different port length on a same box: For example I need 31.5 inch of port length total for 2 x 3" round ports. Can I make one 14" and the other 17.5"??? It's just that it is quite difficult for me to fit those two ports inside the box, outside would be possible but aestethically wouldn't be good. Thanks guyz, Kelvin

my subs are going to be upfiring (towards roof), would it sound best to have the port facing the rear of car? or facing roof (same direction as subs)? Or does it even matter? This is going in a 2door jeep wrangler. Thanks

  14. Thought I would post this little bit of theory that I discussed with Mattdog from Neons.org tonight. I would like to see if anyone has anything to add/discuss further? Typical 4ga stranded copper wire has approximately 0.000292/ft of resistance, so for a typical 20ft run of wire to the trunk, that equals 0.00564 ohms. Pretty much negilible, the fuse will have more resistance . A battery like the Optima Yellow Top runs approximately 0.0028 ohms of resistance. Battery resistance changes with temperature, but in the case of a gel-cell deep cycle, that battery temperature will be more stable than the typical lead-acid during use. Deep cycle batteries also have less resistanc…

  15. box dimensions 38 * 13 * 15.98= 7894.12 in³ = 4.56835 ft³ tuned to 32hz Bracing with 1 in dowel rod up/down r=.5 h=15.95 3.142 * .25 * 15.94 = 12.5 in³ = 0.007233 ft³ front/back r=.5 h 12.97 3.142 * .25* 12.97 = 10.188 in³ = 0.005895 ft³ probably two of these.. perpendicular or parallel so this leaves either 4.553884 for parallel or 4.555222 for perpendicular, up/down and front/back plus sub displacement of .19 4.363884 parallel.......... and for port area, with 57.25 in² slotted, ~50% for aero is 28.625 in² so a 6in aero port will be about 13.62 in long with the flare, with 28.26 in² without. round is also about 55% more efficient than slot so.. i think all my math …

I apologize for asking a question that has been asked plenty of times before, but I couldn't quite find the answer I was looking for. I have an OBS Tahoe with 2 18s, subs up ports back (4 aero ports along the bottom). I need to secure the box to the floor, as it's shaking around pretty badly. My question is, is there an optimal distance to have between the end of the port and the trunk lid? I've read where people just say to put it at different distances and just try it out, but this is no help to me because A. I don't have a termlab and B. the box is moving so rapidly that it pushes itself away in a few seconds anyway. I'd rather not drill holes through the floor until I…

I currently use DIY interconnects in the form of a twisted pair with drain wire terminated with soldered RCA ends. This has worked very well for my current setup and has been fairly cheap. Although, the twisted pair is more likely used for a balanced signal then an unbalanced signal (all my runs are unbalanced). I have been researching various interconnect methods and their craziness. I have noted form numerous sources that coaxial interconnects are better suited for unbalanced signals. From what I gathered, using coaxial cable in the vehicle environment can be expensive and difficult. The difficulties arise with inflexible cabling and long RCA ends. I can image the troub…

  21. From what I've been reading, using a ported box will give you a 3 db gain in output, as will using a second subwoofer. Right now I'm running a ported Dcon. So, if I were to buy another one, it would pretty much be a waste of money to run them sealed? I should be getting the same amount of output from one ported as I would from two sealed? (Someone should really change the title under my name from "Member" to "Forum idiot". )

  23. So i built a 4.6cf box, tuned to 32 hz for a DCON 15. This is a big box. (at least for me) So I braced it very well. Is there anything else that should be done? Should anything be put inside the box? Like Dynomat, acustastuff? etc... Thanks, Duane

Hey all.I was just wondering if I should get longer aero ports.Right now I have 2 4" PSP aero ports and they are kinda short in my opinion.I wasnt real sure on which way to measure them so I measured them from flare to flare.I was aiming for 35hz for my tuning. The flares right now are 11" long from flare to flare. The tube part is only 5" long and the rest of the length is the flares. Here is my setup info. I have 4 10" DC Audio Level 3 m2's with level 4 upgrades and a dc 5k My box deminsions are 16" Tall x 30" Wide x 23" Deep. So should I lengthen my ports to get more port area or not? Let me know if anymore info is needed please. Thanks
