  1. SSA sure hit a home run with there line of subs.. anyone who has heard them has nothing but good things to say about them.. i love mine and i bet i don't have a hour play time on it yet..everyone who has heard it loves it.... i am sure glad that i was told about the Xcon before i bought something else !
  2. You have a number of misconceptions in there. Ported boxes only suffer from port noise if there is too little port area. There would be no problems with that if you make the port big enough. Ported boxes will be louder than sealed, especially in the lows of most music. What was the size of your old ported box and what was it tuned to? You can change the tune of your ported box, you just have to make the port longer or shorter. Having the port recessed is ok as long as you account for that extra depth in the port length. So if you recess the port 3/4", you have to realize that that 3/4" counts towards the port length. If you don't account for it your actual tuning frequency will be a little lower than you think. It won't be a huge deal, however, and you probably wouldn't notice the difference. Just thought I'd point it out for thoroughness's sake.
  3. Ah i see my fairly short review was put up. I definately got to get another Icon for my dogsled...I'm very happy with it. It did get significantly louder after break. It really surprised me. I also just ordered the Saz-1200 so i'll have to post up my results from that as well when i get it. Depending on the output, it will determine if i'm going to port it or not.
  4. I have owned that hifonics amp your looking at and it is a very good budget amp but I had a few problems with it in the few months I owned it. I switched to sundown and have had no problems with the products yet. If you are looking into sundown amps and have a tight budget you can also look into db-r. They sell refurbished sundown amps for pretty good prices and they work great. I have the 100.4 and the 1500 and got both from there. I noticed you didnt say anything about your wiring. Whatever you go for with for your electrical you will want to make sure to do the big 3. I doubt youll be able to run even a single 18" btl on just a stock battery so I would advise doing all your electrical upgrades now especially if you are looking into getting another one in the future.
  5. alternator- the bigger the better, IMO ohio generator builds the best out there, and if you give them a call they will be more than willing to help you out on designing and building an alternator to suit your needs. batts- Batcap, XS powermasters, and Kinetiks are really the best 3 pretty unanimously. as for which is the best, opinions vary, the owner of Ohio Generator along with myself agree that Kinetik is overall the best batt, but any choice from the three companies I mentioned would do great. amps- SUNDOWN FTW!! lol if you want the system to last in the future, and not have to upgrade to a higher quality amp in the future go with something nice like a sundown from the start. a single BTL when installed correctly can handle even up to 4kw daily. of course any sundown SAZ series is strappable, and the minimum I would recommend on one is a 1500d, so you could always buy more and strap them together in the future. subs- BTL is a good choice, Ascendant Audio Mayhems are great to, built and designed from the same guys. as for the air space, that would be for a 15" 18's you should really use 6-8 cuft, and to hit the lows well and be more musical you will want to be closer to 7.5-8.5 cuft per sub. install- who is doing all of this for you? or are you doing it? be sure to allow money in budget for install materials and wiring, this is a decent sized install you are talking about so I hope you feel comfortable doing it, if not then we can make some recommendations for you there as well.
  6. Head Unit Settings Bass Boost/Exend = Off Loud/Loundness = Off Sub Level: + whatever yours goes up to minus a few whatever your preference Bass = 0 or lower, whatever your preference LPF = 100Hz or lower, whatever your preference Amp Settings Gain = Set with DMM, no more than 50-60% if you dont have one. LPF = 100Hz or lower whatever your preference Bass Boost = Off SSF = 1-5 Hz lower than box tuning, or until subs start to reach its excursion level.
  7. Depends on what you consider the definition of "tune" to be. Making a sealed box bigger or smaller will shift the Fc up and down.
  8. Install is the key though. Personally I am not a fan of Scott's drivers. Not that they don't sound good, but for the price I'd spend my money elsewhere. Note I am not at all knocking his install capabilities as he has proven those to the nth.
  9. Thanks guys for getting back so quickly, M5,,,,,,i guess I have always had a predisposition for sealed vs ported because most of the time I was working with my car enviroment and was restricted to smaller spaces and enclosure sizes. Also, I was never motivated by SPL rather SQ, and sealed always SEEMED to give me that tight, accurate bass I love. However now that I have an enviroment ,(ie , living room ), where space is not as important, you are right, I can explore ported enclosures to get a little more output rather than increase the wattage. In addition, I now accept the reality (unlike the person who posted " give me my 20 hz " ), that frequencies below about 25hz are mostly unusuable/listenable and waste available power, so much for that "holy grail" of sealed enclosures. WOW!!! I will plug the T/S parameters into the computer and look at the possibilities. Hope I don't lose the tight accurate response I have now. (enable SSF @ 25HZ, upper end at 80hz active to my Boston VRM 80S).
