  1. Well..given the direction we are taking with the trying to re-iterate the importance of having manufacturing here in the states it reminded me of something I learned of in history class years ago. FDR was famous for his "Fireside Chat's" back in the days of nothing but a radio to talk to the people on a personal level...so this is what i want to do. I'll hop in the chat in the evenings when I have time if you want to shoot the breeze. I would rather not to get into a technical debate or an enclosure Q&A as well we have the forum for that. But if you'd like to come in and shoot the breeze go for it. I'm in there now for those who have never been in, it is at the top of the page in the "Chat" tab. We'll see how this goes and see if we can get a set time occasionally for people to come in and socialize. -Nick
  2. SMDs suck, they made me break 50s too easy.
  3. Here go some amp options buddy: http://www.woofersetc.com/p9255/SAZ1000D--Sundown-Audio-1000W-1Channel-Monoblock-Amplifier.htm http://www.woofersetc.com/p6040/ZRS7000D--Cadence-2600-Watt-1-Ch-Competition-Amplifier.htm http://www.woofersetc.com/p6102/TXA1000D--Cadence-Class-D-Mono-Power-1000-Watt-Amplifier.htm http://www.audioque.com/aq/?page_id=26 Also check out the for sale section, amps for sale all day: Check out the Crossfire amp in that thread listed above.
  4. The new Sundown SAX-1200D would be a great choice for an amplifier .... http://www.soundsolu...%252d1200D.html Another option would be the SAX-125.2 http://www.soundsolu...%252d125.2.html depending on the voice coil option you choose for your "Q". This amp wiring kit would be a great choice .... http://www.knukoncep...?prodID=KOL-AK4
  5. To keep you picture hungry fellas satisfied: Used this to clean up all the sheet metal:
  6. 10*log(1000/300) = 5.2db Ofcourse that doesn't take things like power compression and other real-world issues into account, so don't expect a full 5db increase.
  7. Just for an example; If you have a driver with an Re of .7ohm and an Le of 2mH, you'd end up with an Fc of 56hz. It's the amount of wire in the gap. A larger diameter coil is going to necessarily have more wire in the gap (all else equal) Certainly it's possible to reduce the inductance by using less wire or other tricks to lower inductance. But as I said; it could become an issue if it wasn't addressed.
  8. It's fairly consistent regardless of the model in our line : 8s = 0.5 cubes ported / 0.25 cubes sealed 10s = 1.0 - 1.5 cubes ported / 0.5 to 1.0 sealed 12s = 1.5 - 2.0 cubes ported / 1.0 to 1.25 sealed 15s = 3.0 - 4.0 cubes ported / 2.0 to 2.5 sealed 18s = 4.0 - 5.0 cubes ported / 3.0 to 3.5 sealed Ball-park figures that will work most of the time for you. the Nightshade and Z v.2 woofers don't really lean towards sealed but the SA line does work fine sealed.
  9. Passenger side of engine bay is cleaned up and back in, Battery tray and first battery is installed , fabd a plate for the fuse holders to mount to , and started running some of the 1/0 connections, By grasshoper at 2010-10-10 By grasshoper at 2010-10-10 By grasshoper at 2010-10-10 By grasshoper at 2010-10-10 By grasshoper at 2010-10-10 By grasshoper at 2010-10-10 By grasshoper at 2010-10-10 By grasshoper at 2010-10-10 By grasshoper at 2010-10-10 You can see in the background of this pic the control module for the fan assembly By grasshoper at 2010-10-10 By grasshoper at 2010-10-10 By grasshoper at 2010-10-10 not sure about the fuse holder mount , made it from some extra material, but not sure Im feeling the squareness, I just dont know if Im feeling the flow of it , ideas or opinions ?
  10. Part of the amp rack getting the stone flake treatment....
  11. I will be adding the Differential Drive (aka Dual Gap) technology when I get a chance. Though it does allow for some flexiblity in terms of keeping BL linear, it shows more benefits in power handling by increasing surface area and air flow over the coil substantially. The W7 is a very simple method: it's a standard overhung design with some machining done in the pole piece. If the right amount is done in the right places, you can achieve surprisingly linear BL, but it becomes increasingly more challenging to achieve this at very high levels of excursion. Of course, I'm of the opinion that a speaker that takes 1kW with 30mm of Xmax is more than enough for my ears. I think your due for a write up on dual gap motors! JBL does have a white paper on the technology; http://www.jblpro.com/catalog/support/getfile.aspx?docid=1253&doctype=3
  12. unloading is what happens when the woofer (in a ported enclosure) plays below the tuning frequency.......... above the tuning frequency the air inside the box is "loading" the cone of the woofer and controlling it's movement much the same as it would in a sealed enclosure..... but when the frequency falls below the tuning frequency of the port the air exchanges at a much more turbulent rate through the port and is no longer controlling the movement of the cone...... This can cause overexcursion where the cone of the woofer can move farther and it's designed to do.... this can lead to ripped spiders and/or surrounds and on some woofers the voice coil itself can smack into the back plate of the motor causing physical damage to the voice coil former..... all in all its not a good thing to do to any speaker...
