Help/ Advice sub suddenly crapped out
Not turning the gain "past the 75% mark" and not turning the volume to max doesn't mean anything. If the voice coil is unwinding, then you overheated the coil and the glue failed. What does your system consist of.....HU, amps, enclosure, etc? What are all of your system settings at (bass boost, gain, any settings in the HU, etc)? What is your typical listening material? If you have a DMM, I would first measure each coil to verify there is a problem with the sub and it's not a problem elsewhere in the system. It's possible you might be seeing something wrong with the voice coil that isn't really there. If the coil is truly unwinding, the only fix is to have the driver reconed. But again, one step at a time and verify that it's actually a problem with the coil.2 points

The NEW Phoenix Gold ... Amplifier looks SWEET!!!
It's been a while, but I think I remember reading on the PG forum that these things were going to be pretty darn expensive?? Indeed. 55% is probably a full power efficiency rating anyways......just about any A/B is going to be in the 30%-40% range for efficiency at normal listening levels. Bingo. Greatly increases system flexibility. That's 30mm one-way. Good, but comparable to dozens of other subs on the market. Though I've been a little leery of PG's subwoofer claims ever since their demonstrated failure to understand Hoffman's Law. Meh. More marketing than anything. The Sony HU in my car right now, that I paid $95 used to purchase, has BB inside it. They aren't necessarily expensive, or unique. Just marketing. Agreed. Even moreso the fact that unless their pots have 0% error tolerance, those charts and the detents aren't going to be 100% accurate. The effect on sound is more important than the exact frequency. Seems more marketing gimmicky to me. With the availability of outboard processing and processing built into headunits......I'd really like to see more of these companies save me money by building simple gain blocks rather than making me pay $$ for the engineering and parts to include these super-duper crossovers and other features that I have absolutely no need for. It's an amplifier. I need it to amplify. That's it.2 points

Best wood for Subwoofer Enclousre?
Birch is less dense, but it's MoE is more than DOUBLE that of MDF. Stiffness is what you would want if competing. Personally, if you are after a normal daily driver, nothing outrageously loud, MDF all the way. And just FYI OP, baltic birch is not $10 more than MDF, it's much more than that if buying by the sheet. The only real Russian Baltic Birch comes in 1116" thick, 60" x 60" squares. Per sheet goes for around $50-79 depending on location. Baltic Birch should be an envious wood for those who compete.. I tried doing a group buy for this type of wood but nobody would comply I can get Russian BB but must be bought in bulk of ~30 sheets at a time. Cost is good only for local pickup.. but pricing has probably gone up since then but like anything, always cheaper to buy in bulk.1 point

Best wood for Subwoofer Enclousre?
It wont be a wall it will just be a trunk setup in my Yukon. All sides will be double baffled The side walls is what I was refrencing to. If this is the case, Yes, birch would be my wood of choice.1 point

Best wood for Subwoofer Enclousre?
Birch is lighter because it is less dense... The more acoustically dense the better, MDF in my experience is always louder by a small amount. Birch doesn't split as easy, is easier on tools, lighter, etc If it's for daily use just go with whatever you prefer.1 point

Opinion on new sub stage?
1 pointI know you have asked about r/f subs, I have used some of them, and in my opinion they get loud but at the expense of sq, especially ported. Personally, with your goal, power and budget, I would have chosen 1 15'' icon ported over the listed sub/subs, period!1 point

mounting options?
1 pointto answer your question, yes, you can mount an amplifier upside down, it won't get a head rush But would I mount it to the roof? No. Sounds like you have a plan, but still wouldn't be my choice. Do you have a false floor? If so, is there any space below that? How about at a 45 degree angle from top of enclosure to the back side window? Is there any space at the bottom of the enclosure against the rear seat? Any room under the rear seats? Pictures with box in from different angles would be amazing right about now1 point

1 pointI've tried explaining to him that what he is hearing during music is the zcon peaking lower than his Icon. that's why the icon sounds louder to the ear.1 point

DIY MP3 Radio
1 pointFwiw, I know that you are not planning on using any filters on the speakers. If you don't like how they sound I can most likely find out what they need with out measuring. Many people have used those drivers so an answer should be out there. (If you are close, (I live in MI) I have a measurement system.)1 point

1 point- Too good to be true?
1 pointSo Stephen is a college kid trying to raise money for college by selling his preordered Skar amplifiers and some Sundown amplifiers he purchased from you, but also appears to operate an ebay business selling car audio installation accessories, which is coincidentally a line of business you were involved in, and is located in Tampa, FL which also happens to be the location of EastCoastCarAudio.com you co-founded according to your signature and ECCA's facebook page? It's also interesting that your old ebay business (1800Woofers) and Mr. Stephens sell extremely similar accessories....Raptor, Tsunami, etc. I don't think you can deny it's not a far leap to draw the conclusions that have been drawn. Either it's just a giant coincidence that you & Stephen have the same supplier and just happen to operate(d) extremely similar businesses selling similar products and happen to share atleast one common location (Tampa), or there is more of a connection than you would like to lead on. You know what else is really interesting? 1800Woofers last feedback was left in April '11. Guess when the ebay user zaffiriiuno became active selling on ebay again? No feedback as a seller from Nov '10 until April '11, a couple feedback left in April for sales....then in July the user starts selling Sundown, Skar shortly thereafter and in August '11 he starts selling the exact same install accessories that 1800woofers was selling. ECCA, that business you co-founded that's located in Tampa according to facebook, was founded in what year? Oh, that's right.....2011 (according to that facebook page). It looks to me that the business from 1800Woofers was simply switched over to a different username. It appears you are undercutting your dealers by selling your products on Ebay at below MAP pricing. But I'm sure it's all just a giant coincidence, we're all just reading way too much into it, and you'll have an excuse for everything.1 point- Orion XTR PRO 124 12" VS JL W3-3 12"
Why would he be wasting his money? His budget and preferences are his own. I feel the 13w6 is a much better driver compared to a 12w3 which is one of the drivers the op is considering. He did ask for opinions. For comparison of output and sound quality I mentioned two different SSA 15" that I have owned. Are you inferring the W6 has more output then an Xcon or Zcon? Not addressing SQ, as that is subjective and install dependent. Edit: Sorry, my post sounds critical, as output is install dependent also. Just thought it was very strange as I have heard plenty of W6's, love their sound but they have all lacked somewhat in output, were a little passive on presence, and power handling is on the lower side for the price their are commanding. I am not saying W6's are blownout over priced, but they don't have the reasonable price this online customer market segment strongly prefers. And yes, JL can sell at what ever they want, because they can and they have the engineering to back their work. Critical posts are preferred I have been discussing the ZCON with another member of this forum. I was expecting way more from it! It wasnt loud in my car and it didnt sound the best either. It was ok for boomy bass songs. I reinstalled my 13w6 and it was a night and day difference. The 13w6 sounds ten times better and was actually a lot louder too! I thought the ZCON sounded decent until I reinstalled my 13w6 lol. I was orignally powering the ZCON with my 2.0K. Then I had amp troubles and switched back over to my XD600/1. There wasnt too much of a difference between 600 watts and 2000 watts on the ZCON. I guess it takes +2000 watts to get this sub loud, I dont know. I had a XCON 15" previously. In my opinion the XCON is a much better sub. I would rate the XCON 15" above my 13w6 simply becasue it could handle 2K daily and had more cone aera. An XCON in a low tuned box would be pretty sweet. Maybe in a different enclsoure the ZCON would perform better. The ZCON was not a sub that I planned on buying to begin with. But I gave it a try. I just bought a 18" Z.3 this past weekend. This was the sub I originally wanted. I had two 12" Z.2 in the past and I know these subs are all around great performers. The Z's, in my opion, are a great ground punder that sounds good too. JUst what I am looking for :)I really have to stop buying car audio equipment! Wifey is starting to get pissed lol.1 point- 2009 jeep
