Take a DMM and check the coils. Press in the center of the cone and listen for a scratchy noise. $100 is a very good deal. Even if you re-coned it would not be a bad deal.

I am leaning towards wiring also. Check it with a DMM at the amp. It's easy to do and I am damn sure we have all done it before, I know I have. When I wired too low in the past my amps would cut off immediately when I put some volume on them. Sounds a lot like what you have now. Definitely get a nice battery.
