Stefan, it seems as if someone has already started you on the right track.

A couple hundred yards is a bit of a long shot. I guess I would have to ask how much money do you want to spend initially on equipment and then how much do you plan on shooting? Also, it might be useful to find out where you want/can shoot as that can sometimes influence your purchase.

I've been keeping my shooting to ~150 yards purely for the fact that I can hold off on buying a scope. Good glass costs money. But if you keep the caliber, and thus the recoil (commonly), down you can often get away with cheaper scopes.

I understand the want for a decent bang; if you do indeed have that want. But like most hobbyists, except for maybe the wealthy, I shoot .22lr the most. But I don't enjoy it the most. I feel much more accomplished hitting a clay pigeon at 100 yards with a .303 or 7.62 then i do with a .22lr or .17hmr.

Im thinking of getting a rifle and scope for plinking cans. Probably shooting 200+ yards.

Can I get something decent used for under $500? Budget including scope for now.

.30-60? .308?

I wont be hunting, but id still like something with impact if I ever need it.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and if you are asking this question, you aren't plinking cans at 200+yards. Most public outdoor ranges don't go past 100, I've seen them out to 1000 but its not that common.

For plinking cans, a Ruger 10/22 with insert random scope here. Tons of fun for cheap.

For hunting, kinda depends on what you want to hunt, for just a few rounds a year, any ole .243, 30-06, .308, .270 will do.

Everywhere I shoot is on state land with lots of space, and back drops, so I guess my point is, there is tons of room verse a typical range.

I've had a 22 with scope, and shot shit as far as I possibly could. It was a cheapo fixed scope, probably 4x or so.

I just want something that has more velocity and impact, so I can shoot further with better accuracy, and if I ever needed to use it then it'd actually have some punch verse a 22.

Any thoughts on relatively cheap scopes? $200, depending on how much rifle turns out to cost.

I know I'm being pretty vague, and wanting something that isn't exactly needed for my goals, but I figured I'd ask any way.

Well I can't offer much first hand experience as I deal mostly with classic firearms and as stated before, I have yet to scope one of my guns seriously. Sorry :(

But I am tuned in about the glass.

Indeed.

Use to have the .17hmr too, but it and the 22 wasn't very satisfying. I don't plan on going through rounds like rambo. Likely shooting less rounds per trip, but getting out more often, certainly won't be firing it like a 22. :P

I don't know how far I can shoot with just the iron sights, but the idea of laying down, and hitting something from even further away with a somewhat decent scope is intriguing to say the least.

I'd be content spending under $450 for the rifle initially, and then perhaps another $200-300 on scope. I'm fine buying used.

Honestly, I have tons of places and space to shoot. There's spots you could easily shoot over a 1/4 mile.

I'd likely shoot every two weeks ish, going through maybe 50 rounds each time.

I think low end glass offers waaaaaaaaaaaaaay less than low end rifles.

Huge margin.

stefan, why do you feel the gun should cost more than the scope?

I gotta agree with this. You can spend less on the gun off the jump then buy improvement parts as/if needed. The scope well, pretty much every time you want a change besides sighting in, its a new scope.

I personally enjoy the AR platform. Reason being is the M4 is a damn nice weapon for what it is. The M16 is fucking horrible. I would seriously prefer a damn muzzleloader to that musket. There is too much that changes between the two. As for caliber, around here I would go with the .223. Easy to find ammo, and parts for weapons. Plus reloading tools are basically a dime a dozen.

My next weapons (in no real order) is another Glock (for me this time), a .357 magnum wheel gun, and a baby M&P .45. I love the damn .45 for me. Granted my wife's 10mm is a fucking beast.

Sold the pop-up camper yesterday!! Blazer sold last week! Now I got me a boat!! I will be buying new tires for the boat trailer today! :)

This reminds me of work... I see chics half nekkid all day. biggrin.png

The perks of some jobs are just better than others...

Hmm, wonder what volume these are, what tuning and what port area.

...and of course, what I can sell the drivers from them for. tongue.png

Every Bazooka tube was tuned to 39 Hz. It was some magical number they established from years of testing while prototyping. CSR had a bir review on them for their 20th anniversary and I remember reading that.

That is what their frequency response numbers say too. Figured they were lying. Funny. Thanks. I'd have to cut some off that port, but its an interesting thought. Of course they probably aren't weather proof...

Sorry for the frustration though. Exactly why I don't vinyl as that is the only thing that ever happens to me. SUPER FUCKING PISSED. Completely sucks. sad.pngsad.pngsad.png

Luckily I sanded the whole box almost to paint-ready level and all transitions are smooth, so without the foam it turned out perfect.

I just figured that's roughly how much I'd need to spend to get a decent rifle. I'm going to visit the local gun shop and see what they have for sale used. Then I can pick your brains later about scopes.

I absolutely hating wrapping pleather, vinyl, etc.

It's one of those things I'll be struggling with in the garage, and a neighbor could be walking by and say: "Hello," and I'd just be pissed and tell them to fuck off. :(

SHIT SEAN .69 oysters on friday OYSTER ORGY.

Me and franklin will walk in, get a martini and do work.

If you ever make it down here, I will take you to Middletons in Annapolis for Oyster-shooters. Most of the Oysters come right off the boat in the Annapolis harbor from what I understand. :)

I hope his parents and all their friends get hit by a truck.

Something says I should be glad I couldn't understand that.
