Posted October 28, 201014 yr Can someone link me to a tool designed to crimp terminals on a larger scale such as 1/0 gauge or give me a home remedy to doing it that doesn't require purchasing specialized tools?
October 28, 201014 yr http://www.delcity.net/store/Crimping-Tools/p_229.a_1I use:http://www.delcity.net/store/Solderless-Connector-Crimping-Tool/p_10383.a_1with a big hammer. The handheld ones are nicer though.
October 28, 201014 yr rosin core solder and a butane torch works for me. just strip the wire slide the terminal cover on then install the wire and slightly crimp and heat and let the solder drip into the terminal end. just dont use to much heat!
October 28, 201014 yr You could use something like this http://store.solar-electric.com/hacrtoforlal.html or you could just use a vice. I've used both methods, the special crimper works well but the vice isn't too bad if you don't have the money or a lot of connections to crimp.
October 28, 201014 yr My suggestion ...Pre cut your cables, take them to your local welding shop get them to install the connectors for you. They may not know what you are trying to accomplish, but thay are masters in the electrical cabling industry. then install your shrink covers and done !!!
October 28, 201014 yr I use these 10 bucks at welding supplyhttps://weldingsupply.securesites.com/cgi-bin/enlarge.pl?main/04040.gif:Lenco+Swedge-On+Tool+Model+840L
October 28, 201014 yr Author Thanks for the information everyone. Getting ready to do big 3 and the last time I tried crimping large gauge it was the biggest pain in my butt.So if I understand correctly, it's like this:Crimp with a hammerSolder on the terminal side away from the jacketHeatshrink

October 28, 201014 yr I use this tool (on the far right) to make my crimps. i got it off ebay for like 30$ works wondersif you can notice how nice the crimp is
October 28, 201014 yr looks like something I need..OP check out the link... I might pick this up as well.http://cgi.ebay.com/HYDRAULIC-ELECTRIC-WIRE-CABLE-CRIMPING-CRIMPER-TOOL-/400167924794?pt=BI_Electrical_Equipment_Tools&hash=item5d2bddf43a
October 28, 201014 yr Thank you ken for actually suggesting the right thing.. Use a hydraulic crimper or a table top vice. Do not use any solder containing acid. simply using a hammer will not work.

October 28, 201014 yr I use a table-top vice like Julian suggested and then put solder over every place the wire touches the terminal. Then cover with shrink tubing of course. Works flawlessly and really not that hard at all. If you have a vice, and aren't prone to having seizure while using a vice, i wouldn't buy the hydraulic crimper unless you're anxious to spend money or you have other uses for it. I must have crimped over fifteen 0 gauge terminals using the vice and it works fine and doesn't take too long. It's extremely easy too.
October 29, 201014 yr I can definately tell who the electricians are in this thread. Proper crimping is key to any connection. Only then can you follow up with solder.
