So the flatter the response curve is the less frequencies it will play?

  • 2-2.5k is too much for the ICON. You more than likely wouldn't notice an increase in output anyway. If you want to get louder you'll need more cone area, or a 12 that can take a lot more power.

The reason why it can't work: - the gap is different - the coils are different - rear ward clearance is different - motor force is different - moving mass is different etc. etc. Essentially, the Xcon

We used to offer an aluminum coil option, but with the all new motor design, the copper coil is quite good with it. There would need to be a slight suspension adjustment due to the different moving m

I just really wanted something that hammers the lows.

The Icon should be doing that with ease.

A flatter response from a speaker means essentially a more even level of output from the frequencies it is being allowed to play.

A larger enclosure and lower tuning will aid in flattening the response and help a little on deepest of notes (more efficient design), but like mentioned above, power handling is effected. But then again, there is the advantage of cabin gain (transfer function) in a vehicle.

I should ask why you feel the need to run that much power, are you planning to compete? Reason being, we have people with 10" Dcon's on less then 1/3rd the power you are running, that have their side and rear view mirrors rendered useless when the volume is up. So output on the Icon, in most respects as it is relative to each persons preference, should be quite good when ported with that much power. If you feel the need to run 2000+ watts, the Zcon is very impressive.

And it does do that very well. So it should be fine if the peak is 33 hz?

I would love to compete in the near future. And my rearview my shakes uncontrollably already. I just want something louder and plays deeper.

Here in Minnesota we hold bass head meet ups every now and then and when I see other people hammering the lows and being much louder I feel i really want to accomplish that same feat.

Maybe adding a second icon will help..

What is your vehicles resonant frequency? Do you know off hand? That will effect the sub woofer's sweet spot.

A second Icon will definitely move up the output.

That's what I'll probably do, or I'll upgrade to an xcon or zcon.

Couldn't tell you. How would I find that?

A pair of Icon's will have greater potential output then a single Xcon or Zcon, due to the cone surface advantage. As for the vehicles res. freq., that can be done through testing or digging around on the net to find out if someone else has already done it. On average, usually I have seen the smaller the vehicle, the higher the resonant frequency.

It might be possible to have your icon reconed from a 12" to 15" or 18". That would require that you buy a new basket also though. Just a thought.

What its your SSF set at?

Use winISD to model your driver in the enclosure you have and tuning you desire. Adjust the signal level to whatever wrms you are using. Now look at the excursion graph. This is what I use to help set the SSF. For instance my Z.3 was tuned to 29hz yet my SSF was set at 23hz. I used winISD and visual examination of the driver while playing to determine this.

For a design goal having an emphasis on playing 25-35hz range I would use as much port area as possible tuned as low as possible. Subwoofer and port orientation always plays a big part as well. Most guys never nail it on the head the first try. It usually takes a couple enckosure designs to get the best results in your vehicle.

More subs will not necessarily play lower but will give more output.

I really don't want to go bigger for a sub. If anything I'll go with 2 icons. I just have to save up for the second one and a bigger amp.

I'll check what my ssf when I get home.

For box tuning what is the point where you shouldn't go any lower?

Get a second Icon and a good box. You will love them !

You don't need to run more power, but with 2 subs, you will play at 2 Ohms, so maybe you need a second one. Or an amp that gives you around 1500-2000 w at 2 Ohms.

You can recone to a bigger size like an 15" or an 18". You will have much more output for the same power, without buying another sub and another amp, and electrical upgrade. You just need a bigger box !

Would going 2 10"s have more cone area than 1 15"? I would think so when you take 10+10 = 20, but when I look at SD it seems like the 15" has more. Or should I not worry about that?

Edit: Plus I really dont have the height in my trunk for a 15".

I have a 1998 Ford Contour.

Max Dimensions: 34x16x20.

If I did a 15" I'd have to do sub up, port back.

Cone area doesn't work that way.

Radius x radius x pi

For a 10 that would be 5 x 5 x 3.14 = 78.5. 2 10's would be 157.

A 15 would be 7.5 x 7.5 x 3.14 = 176.

Be careful comparing though. Different companies rate the actual Sd differently. It depends on the cone, surround and where they measure.

I should've known that! Fail, haha.

Good information! Thank you!

How well does Sub Up, Port Back perform in trunks with no folding down seats?

An icon 15 would fit on that 16" height, the OD would be about flush with 16" and the cut out diameter will clear the top and bottom pannel inside, when using a single pannel with 16" height as the front face.

How much would a basket cost on top of a recone?

How much would a basket cost on top of a recone?

I'm not positive but my guess would be ~20.

That's not bad. I'd have to see how well everything would be in my car. I would still want to get a better amp. I feel as if the MB.Quart doesn't perform like I thought it would.

Then go try another amplifier!

The mb quart is not a bad amp at all. You are probably just expecting too much out of a single 12.

Well yesterday was my first listening to my sub again being I was on vacation. Yeah it's very loud, haha. I can move a good amount of air. But I would still like it to get louder. So maybe saving up for a second isn't a bad idea.

So I just bought a new car and I'm going to put a 10" instead of a 12" in it. So with my 12" Icon would sending it in to get it reconed to a 10" cost anymore than the $75 to get a different basket? Totally price says $112.91 after shipping and taxes.
