Just went in and re-tuned both the front stage and sub using the test tones I made a while back on Audacity. Also set tones with the volume level at 40/50 vice 35/50 to hopefully bring RCA voltage up. I'm not going to go higher than 80% as of now just simply for the fact that I don't have a scope to verify that the signal isn't being sent clipped. What surprised me is that while, last time, I was able to bring my amp gain to match a voltage right at rated before the 0dB light came up last time, I was able to eke a good deal more this time around using a 50Hz@-6dB tone. Last time it was the same frequency, but a -5. Also, before, the protection circuit meant to ramp voltage down to protect the amplifier did not engage, even as I crossed the 750W threshold, but stayed at 750W just for good measure. At this point, the amp's gain knob is just below the 12 o'clock position. As for the front stage, I used a 1KHz@-3dB tone and again set for the amp's rated power of 125W@4ohms. The results, however, were both good and bad. While it feels like I lost sub output, I noticed the front stage was much more present and full. Methinks there's just a tradeoff here. I've also gained a shit-ton of volume out of the front stage, so maybe I have just been used to listening to a quieter front stage relative to the sub volume. Does that mean I've lost my bass entirely? Absolutely not. I still get that rich, low, environmental bass in its laid-back presentation. I think once the suspension starts to loosen up and I get the second Minotaur in there to feed the ICON rated power, I'll gain a bit more output. This all means I'm still reserving my final verdict, but so far it's pretty much still all positives

So I've made it pretty obvious that I was ordering a 10" ICON from SSA for a while, but haven't really put up my impressions of it yet. Well, just so happens that I got her in this week and have had a couple days now to play with it. But first, the pictures! Was too heavy for the wife to bring in...lol All concerns about this sub not being packed gingerly and braced to survive UPS' typical mishandling can now be dispelled. The foam blocks were glued to the shipping box itself and the magnet was held in place with more cardboard and a wood basin. I ended up pulling the sub out from the magnet side because I didn't want to damage the foam blocks Yay! I has a sticker lol. I'll save this for future use. This sub is sub-stantial (sorry, couldn't resist the pun). That's a gorgeous-looking motor. More on that later... I'm a big fan of these poly rings being used for spacers and the amount of side cooling this sub offers. The wiring is Audio Technix 10ga that I had lying around. Foam pad meant to prevent lead slap. Ends up being quite effective, IMO More shots of those poly rings that I happen to love (inherently resonance-resistant), but what stands out to me is that coil. Just like it's peeking up to say, "hello...I'm about to give you delicious, clean bass." Believe it or not, this is my favorite feature of the whole sub (aside from how it sounds, of course. Instead of just taking a foil sticker and slapping it on the bottom end of the motor, it's encased behind some clear plastic. Now here's where things got weird. I had an enclosure built previously for my 10" DC Audio Level 2 and was having issues getting the ICON to fit because of the double baffle as well as the inner baffle being about 1/8" too small for the basket. At first, I thought I was going to have an issue, but then a voice inside me said "turn it around, man...let that beautiful magnet be the centerpiece." So I ended up with this: And it literally slid right in there. Mounted normally, the rubber gasket was starting to bunch up, causing issues with it seating flush. But I think reverse mounting was the winning ticket. Here's some more shots: Placed in for a test fit. The enclosure is just narrow enough to fit in between the two standoffs for the rear deck. And the finished product: XS D2700 in the stock battery compartment sitting right alongside a Zed Audio Minotaur III. In the future, I will have a second Minotaur and be able to feed the ICON up to 2.6k at 4 ohms. Talk about efficiency and the essques! So here's my first and second-day listening impressions. I'm just going to copy them out of my MAF build log: SO! First day of listening to the ICON in the car. Keep in mind that Aaron actually recommended using the SMS enclosure with its 32Hz tuning and I, stubbornly, went with the dcar box anyway (seeing as how I had it at the house)... Umm holy shit, guys. There's something awesome about this ICON. On paper, it might not look as awesome as some other subs. If all you look at is power ratings, 1250W isn't an incredibly huge amount. And it looks like a Fi . But I'm telling you all that this sub has character. It has low end and in magnitudes greater than I was ever able to experience with the Level 2. I know it's not a fair comparison seeing as how the coil sizes are different, power rating is almost twice as different, blah blah blah, but it was the last sub I ran in my setup. So there. Even running the Level 2 at 2 ohms with twice the power I'm feeding the ICON at 4, the DC can't keep up. This ICON got lower, louder, and cleaner across the spectrum than the DC ever did in an enclosure DESIGNED for the DC. Today's demo discs were Hardwell Presents Revealed, Volume 4 (mainstream EDM) and Chase and Status - Brand New Machine (Drum & Bass). Hardwell's album produced a good amount of bass. Nothing exceptional, but what you would expect out of radio-friendly EDM tunes. The standouts here were Hardwell's own "Never Say Goodbye," Martin Garrix' "Animals," Armin van Buuren's "This Is What It Feels Like," and pretty much all of Chase & Status' new album in terms of bass reproduction. In a contest of lows, Chase & Status all the way, which really helped show how low this sub could dig. Low, loud, and clean are definitely the ICON's M.O. here, but what amazed me was how much more transparent my sub stage has gotten, even over doing everything I could with the DC. If the ID10 was like getting into your car first thing on a cold morning and the DC was like the first few minutes after running that defogger, the ICON is like the same windshield on a perfect autumn afternoon. TL;DR = ICON>Level 2, though not a fair comparison. Gets louder, lower, and does it cleaner with a certain sense of character that can't really be described. --- Yes, yes it is. I still want to do another tune with it, but I've been very impressed with it in terms of clarity of signal and ease of use. You would be tickled pink with it, man. I didn't choose the ICON life, the ICON life chose me --- More ICON listening impressions today. Listened to a couple more albums: Chase & Status - No More Idols Nero - Welcome Reality Excision - X Rated Bass is still full, surrounding, clean, low, and (dare I say) WARM. I have yet to go back in and re-tune the front stage for the increased sub stage output, but there's something almost analog in the way the sound of this sub is. It's never overbearing or as in-your-face as the output should be making you feel, which is something I really like. That's not to say it doesn't get loud, but it does it in a way that just feels nice. Listening to one of my favorite tracks of all time, Chase & Status' "Flashing Lights" was just a pure joy and the ICON handled it effortlessly. Nero's "My Eyes" was just like I remembered hearing it live. I almost closed my eyes and saw Hard Day of the Dead's light show going on from when I saw them a few weeks ago. In a week or two, I'll start putting in some acoustic and live instrument tracks to see how it keeps up with those. --- More listening impressions will come in over time. I'm looking forward to the suspension to loosen up and see how this thing does after a break-in. Also very happy that I'm getting this response with only 750W available for the sub (4 ohms). Being able to give her rated and more is going to be a real treat.

Why does everybody want to race me in the Miata? I mean seriously, when you drive a big honkin 10 passenger van and tow a trailer behind it, do you expect to be quicker than a car so small you can barely see?

To answer this question impartially, let me start by saying that both companies are reputable and put out amazing product. My best advice would be to set a budget that you want to spend, and see which fits the bill best. Remember that the sub woofers are probably the least important part of anyone's daily set up in terms of overall sound. (when talking about reputable sub woofers with solid credentials.) Determine how much amp you have, and what are your goals. Are you trying to get as loud as you can with the least money spent, or are you more concerned with a sub woofer system that sounds good to you. I have always made it a rule of thumb to decide on amps and how much space I wanted to give up to the box(s), and based on the two factors (power/space) I pick the sub(s) that fit the bill most appropriately. The biggest mistake most people make is buying the "baddest" sub they can afford and then starving it in a box that is either to small or with too little port area, or powering it with a cheap amplifier. So to answer your question, what amp(s) are you using? Have you done the appropriate electrical upgrades and do you have the appropriate space for the sub(s) that you have chosen. And lastly, yes an excellent box can make any sub perform well, a poor box will never allow any sub to perform optimally.

I had an SSA Icon 12 in my car for about a year on 1200w RMS. The sub was in a 2.5ft^3 box tuned to 33 hz and it was definitely the most musical sub i have ever listened while dropping an insane amount on lows. I sold the sub a few months ago, ordered an Xcon 15, and built a 5ft^3 box tuned to 33hz again. The sub arrived yesterday packaged inside a crate that was inside a box lol. This thing must not have moved an INCH. The suspension on this sub is STIFF. Most definitely the stiffest suspension I have felt. Anyways, after hooking it up to my MB Quart Onx2000.1, I can say this thing is...well for lack of a better word...a MONSTER. The move up in cone area and power defintely made a huge difference in the amount bass. The xcon seems to the play the higher bass notes with more authority as well. Overall, this is one kick-ass sub and I cant wait for the suspension to loosen up and spend more time playing it. SSA has never let me down.

It's amazing how accurately this sub can play music while getting loud. I haven't even taken to the time to set my low pass as well as I'd like. I think I need to weld my trunk shut to stop the flex. I only weigh 160lbs or so but the trunk still flexes even with me sitting on it!

Love the work the Ethos are doing in the Lincoln. I'd also love to hear more about the front stage as well, the ribbon tweeters (or at least that's what they look like) and the story behind the choice and installation along with what they're paired with has had my interest peaked for awhile I've just been to lazy to ask, lol.

Lol neither did I until I had it in my hands. The Level 2 was only 20-something pounds, so this is almost double the sub. 2.5" coil to 3" and so on and so forth. Never knew what I was missing...

Just got my IA6.4 delivered today. I am very impressed with this little amp so far! I have a busy schedule, so hopefully I'll get the 6.4 installed soon along with the Tantrics. I can't wait to see the difference in sound going from a Kicker 350.4 powering the Rockford Fosgate to the IA6.4 powering the Tantric components. One of my dogs showing an interest in the IA amp.

threw the 12 in a test box on a Kicker 500 at 4 ohms and I think I'm going to be more than satisfied for a DD. I don't think I'll crank the bass knob up much with proper power. This measly 250 watts is enough to get a little windshield flex.

Hi guys, I recently bought a NS-1 for my installer. The amp made a world trip before coming to my country (thanks USPS) but we got it right. From the beginning there was a noise like something was loose in the amp. We thought it was due to the fact that the amp is very long and there were not enough screws to hold the panel. One day he smelled something burning, but could not define where it was coming from : from the amp, from the car next to him that was like a smoke machine in the traffic jam,...? Amp never shut off to these days. Today he installed his 2nd btl , re-installed the amp, and had to open it because he realized the fan in the amp was running as soon as he hooked up the grounds. Voltage was not staying as usual when the car was off. He thought it could be the old Beeper alarm that was defective. He saw some places burnt in the amp, and a little screw (or piece of something) in it ! He called me, telling me after the first grounds, the fan was not running ! Let's hope everything will be OK ! I am sorry for him. He told me to ask you what could be the metallic noise he was hearing since he received the amp, and I always forgot to ask. (I don't know if it makes sense, hope you'll get it !) I'll let you know how it works. He's so disappointed. Did the amp got damaged during shipping (the box was good looking) or what else could happenend ? He had good voltage, even on his "weak" electrical : never under 13 v on peak, and usually 14.ish v. He never plays for long.

Going from an OBD1 system to OBD2 is a breeze. A task you obviously do not understand the depth of. Not in whole. I just know the mod motor swap in my foxbody mustang was a breeze.

Why do my lights flicker with a 300amp mechman in a 2009 Jeep liberty? Charging voltage driving down the road is 14.4 plus and it never goes below 13.4 with the stereo cracked up all the way. I am only drawing around 2000 watts.

Even though I have been in this industry for nearly 12 years I am a competition NOOB!!! I'd like to see some type of competition section. I easily view this site twice an hour daily! However I find myself going to other sites to find info on comp rules, ect. I'm sure it would be very beneficial to a lot of people here. Maybe Mark and Aaron could even get with the owners of the leagues and get them to set up league sections here to help inspiring competitors. Had my xs power for a little over a year now on my integra ls its a 5100r. So i would be driving and bumping and everything was fine but now in this past week ive started to notice my car slowly cranking over hesitating to start and now as i have the car running and bumping my lights are dimming this used to not happen. Some of you know that I purchased an AR15 and I absolutely love it! Some of my favorite things is shooting guns and car audio. I was thinking we could do a thread to show off our guns that we have! I think it'd be cool to see the different guns you guys have and what you think about them and their accessories. So I'll start: My Windham Weaponry MPC model AR 15. .223/5.56 Came stock with the carrying handle/A4 Dual Aperture Elevation & Windage Adjustable sight. Acessories Aimpoint PRO with QRP2 mount (stock mount for the red dot).Primary Arms 3x Long Eye Relief magnifier with American Defense AD-SM-01 swing mount.Troy Industries 7" MRF CAR/M4 Drop-In Battle Rail.Small 1" flashlight.Plan to get 2 stage trigger.More open trigger guard.Maybe some backup sights.Maybe a new stock.Fore grip.And obviously some more magazines!!Like I said, I love this gun. I will be using this for deer hunting this coming up rifle season. The optic and magnifier are clear as can be and look amazing. I love the American Defense swing mount. It's definitely an awesome feature on how it is removed. The Troy battle rail is tight and gives an awesome rugged look while not hurting the hands. For a drop in rail guard it is nice and snug with no wiggle AT ALL. I really need to get more shooting time in with this gun! It's a blast to shoot My other gun is my Remington 870 Express Magnum 12 gauge shotgun with a 3-7x scope and pistol grip. Can't remember the scope brand. Everyone knows Remington is top quality!! This gun has some miles on her. This was my dad's gun that he's handed down to me and is really fun to shoot. So post you're pics! I'd love to see what you guys have

are the fans on these amps really as noisy as people say?

Just curious to hear all of your responses. We know why people say not to buy it and 99 percent of the time, cost comes into the picture. The only other potential negative I've ever noticed was in terms of how some of the lower lines used to be packaged that caused a little paint damage on the basket during shipping. So assume you're around a bunch of people who've never heard of nor actually heard SSA subs. What do you say that convinces them it's a solid purchase over the competition? Asking for purely informational purposes and keep in mind I have an ICON myself on order.

There's more factored into IA's pricing besides just the fact they can charge more. One is assembled with COTS components, one is basically done by hand. I'm sure you can figure out which is which. But comparing a ZV4 to a Judge is a one-sided fist fight and they really weren't intended to compete with each other.
