Yes, first hand.  Still no idea what you want.  Spending $100 on the fat box would be a serious waste of time, there is no cheating Physics.  It is really rather easy to model and figure out the differences.

No one on here hates on JL, just on the way you are asking something that is atm unanswerable.

I wasn't talking about you jcarter I was referring to M5's comment about JL posted its specs for people like me and how I was unwilling to even try when I litterely just agreed and said yes I'm gonna plug the numbers and see. Dude just sounds like he loathes me cause I wouldn't toss $500 worth of equipment in the garbage and go buy a active front stage when he suggested it.

All I asked is, if manufacturers suggest smaller boxes for obvious reasons or if it was just a rumor or is it in fact better to build a little bit bigger to get more output and make more of your available power.  Doesn't seem to be a impossible question to answer. I was mostly looking for some advice from somebody more knowledgable then me.

Not all manufacturers act the same.  There are no "obvious" reasons for a smaller box as well.  The "knowledge" you are basing that on isn't based on fact.  If you want advice, that is easy.  Explain what you want to improve and why and we can help.

I already did my man several times I said I wanted more output (spl). And the reason I said obvious reasons is I have heard they do it to give their subs greater power handling and make it seem as though they do best in small enclosures to sell more units. You answered one of my questions you said that wasn't based in fact so can I assume their recommendations are actually for optimal output while still sounding decent. I do know they say the spec ported box will gain 3-4db over the sealed box. Now all I need to know is will a larger then recommended yield more output and make better use of the power I have available. Doesn't have to be an exact mathematic equation just a ballpark guess would be fine. 

You have heard this and heard that. They say this and they say that. You seem to be taking it with a grain of salt, which is good with most big box companies marketing strategies. Something I have noticed after being on this site for a while is that the seasoned members don't spout crap and hearsay. The newer members that do, typically learn fast or don't last long and move on looking for someone else to confirm their idea/plan/belief/etc. Asking questions is how we learn, just don't get upset if you don't like the answer.

Taking a few minutes to install winisd and enter driver parameters isn't exactly a time to jump for joy, but plugging in for different box specs afterward can teach you a lot. Enter you current box specs since you know how that sounds, then enter your new desired box specs and see what changes. More or less output? Peakier? Flatter? f3?

You just want a ballpark guess? Yes, a bigger box will be louder. Now what did you just learn? Nothing. How do you even know I am right? I don't even know if I am right, but you wanted a ballpark guess.

I had the extra money and "wanted to do it right" so when I bought my XCON 10" I paid SSA to design me a ported enclosure because I too wanted more output (despite enjoying sealed boxes the majority of my life (I'm 45 and got my first system at 18)).  I was surprised when I got the design and it was almost a cubic foot larger than their optimal guidelines on the website, but I trusted them and it sounds nice, very...very...nice.  I told them my max dimensions and desired goal- as smooth a frequency response as possible all the way up to 80 Hz (the HU crossover point).  Point I'm making is they modeled it with software and picked the "best" design.  Now, my electronic forum friend, go get that software, model it, and let us know what you come up with. 

 

Looks like I'm going with 3 cubic feet tuned to 33hz. According to the program that seems to be my best middle ground. Loud but still musical.

Why do you say that?  What program, what did it "say"?

Well I used a box calculator and 3 cubes and 33hz was the best for spl I could get on the graph. That's after displacement  and bracing.

There is no JL hate here. We all know they make very good products.

The W7 is a good sub.

I understand it might be frustrating, because you wanted answers we can't give you !

Build your ported box, tune to 34 Hz, with the volume you want/can, and have fun !
It will be much louder than sealed.

If you don't like it, build another box,

and so on !

Maybe, but Dodge makes some monster trunks.  I bought a Challenger over a Camaro or Mustang in part because the trunk was HUGE and the backseat had leg room for the fam. 

 

from past experience the W7 sounded bottom heavy and mushy past 3cf and jump's the nest with out a SSF.....  

I was running a Crown BPX 2200.1 with the testing

nice sub but be carefull with clipping the amp...they don't like that very much and they manifest motor noise

when the gain is turned too high

 

personally I classify the W7 as a SQ sub...

it's loud but if your goal is just loud for the money you can do better with a sub that can handle much more abuse

I could barely fit my 3.5 cubic foot enclosure for a 15" in my friends Challenger, trunks arent that big to me.

I have a 13.5 cubic foot trunk so yea it will be tight if it even fits but I'm gonna use every inch for the box. Like I said the trunk openings are small so I may have to build it in place to use all the available space.
