Which companies used TC motors?

Recommended Posts

lately i've heard quite a few bigger name companies have used various TC sounds motors on their own sub lineups, and i'm wondering, is it possible to salvage the motors (and baskets?) to recone these subs? If so, which models should i be looking out for? I know Eclipse used some in their Ti and 8200 range, and Lightning Storm, Ground Zero etc, but i think Eclipse are going to be the easiest to track down.

Also, who can recone these, and to what size? I've found that Fi can recone them in this thread, but it looks like their baskets arent a great fit for most motors.

Any help appreciated guys :neil:

the hard part of reconing them is keeping the original basket.

it is hard to find a company using 10 inch spiders that will recone other brand subs.

that is why almost everyone either bolts on a standard 12 spoke, or machines a adapter, or motor to adapt a 12 spoke basket.

now tc2+, tc7, and tc9 motors are capable of accepting a 12 spoke with no mods. side note some tc9's can.

If i were to recone them, i'd like to go to 18 if possible, or a 15 at least. Not worried about baskets as long as they work, but why are adaptors needed, will regular 12 spokes not just bolt up to the motor?

With the eclipse subs, the 8200 was the TC-9, the Ti was the 3hp/TC-3000, and Ti Pro was the 4hp? or am i wrong? Almost no chance of finding a Ti Pro, but the other two i might.

not sure how the top plate is machined on the 8200.

but i know for a fact if you get a hold of a complete ti (non pro) it is a 3hp motor which for future reference shares very little with the tc 3000 motor.

they just look similar. any way i digress okay try to get at least a motor and basket still attached if you go for the regular ti.

reason for this is it has a screw on top assembly, and the factory basket does not have threads machined in it, instead it is a adapter ring with the threads machined in it. which is bolted to the inside of the ti basket. the thing that makes this ring so important is it's bolt pattern is exactly the same as a 12 spoke basket. so that way you want to get a 12 spoke basket and bolt the adapter ring to the out side of the basket, that way when you thread it on the motor the the extended top plate sits flush with the bottom of the 12 spoke basket. and you can just order a 3hp recone and let them know it is already adapted to a 12 spoke.

now everything i just said is only important if you want to do the recone yourself, if you don't care about shipping it all you need is a motor and fi will do the rest.

and fi makes a really nice 18 inch driver with the 3hp motor.

p.s. don't bother with the 4hp or ti pro as alot of companies do not mess with a 4 inch coil.

if you want pics to help illustrate what i tried to explain. let me know and i can provide them.

the Ti is easy to find, like the pair of 12s i have sitting here, blown, doing nothing.

also, the lightning audio x2 series is a bolt on tc motor, i believe it too is the 3hp. i have a working one of those for sale.

The LA Storm used a motor with a 4 bolt pattern. That's why it needs an adapter to match up with a 6 bolt basket. I was going to do 18's with four of my LA Storm neo motors but decided to do them with TC9 motors after getting the recone kits from Fi. Instead I put the neo motors on a pair of 15" TC-3000 top assemblies and have a pair of 15" TC-3000 baskets that need recones. I just have to find a source of 10" spiders other than RU (too expensive). I'm probably going with 18's for my LA Storm ceramic motors. I'll just make my own adapter plate so I can learn a little metal working along the way.

Cool, thanks for the help guys, i have a fairly good idea of what i'm looking for now. But stovebolt, if you could, pictures would be appreciated mate !

Oh, and thanks for the offers, but unless you guys can ship those unused motors to Australia on the cheap :neil:

ok first thing first i need to apologize, as my in experience has caused me to miss inform you a little.

the threaded adapter and all works but the 3hp from an eclipse has a extended pole piece which will severely limit reward excursion to only about a half of an inch.

the reason it works with my 3hp motor i used is because it is a custom 3hp that has a extra half inch of magnet thus making the pole flush with the bottom of the basket.

now onto pics

eclipse sub sw9122

hybridpossibilities001.jpg

the threaded adapter

hybridpossibilities002.jpg

same adapter bolted to another basket

hybridpossibilities004.jpg

the adapter would be bolted on the underside of 12 spoke in the same manner

hybridpossibilities005.jpg

now onto the problem

see the eclipse 3hp pole will sit to high but this is how the motor will sit on the basket with the threaded adapter.

hybridpossibilities006.jpg

now my custom 3hp in the same scenario, which shows why it worked when i did it.

hybridpossibilities007.jpg

eclipse motor's extended pole piece

hybridpossibilities009.jpg

custom 3hp pole piece

hybridpossibilities008.jpg

so a special adapter still needs to be made to space the motor further away from the basket.

so unless you are willing to pay a machinist to machine a extra tall threaded adapter.

your going to have to just send it in to fi or who ever for them to do it.

and even if you get a adapter made that spaces the magnet far enough away, the company of your choice might still request that you send it in so they can set the coil's depth properly. unless you can get them to sell you all the parts loose, and then you assemble it all by yourself.

and again sorry about the slight, but important misinformation.

I see what you mean now. That makes things a little more complicated, although i know a couple of engineers who could get something made up on a lathe for that spacer. The coil is the only problem, if worst comes to worst i can always handball it to a local recone specialist in the city, they've been in contact with FI before i believe.

Cheers for the pics mate.

i have edited my first post alot i am a moron lol

that is a extended pole piece which will not interfere with reward excursion.

as it is on the inside of the voice coil. the only way it could possible interfere is if it hits the dust cap and i highly doubt that is possible. the pole piece would have to be like 2+ inches above the top plate.

sorry i have no idea what i was thinking.

Edit: apparently i can't edit my post.

Hah, its all good mate dont stress. Like i said, the pics and help is much appreciated, just a matter of doing the footwork here in Oz and finding some old drivers and sorting out some recones.
