I am so worn out. I am happy with the money I am making, but I told the boss 3 days ago I needed 20 hours by today. Pay period ends the 15th and last day of the month, and I want to see 100 hours turned per pay period, and 20 hours would put me at my 100. Well he laid it to me with 16.8, 17.9, and 22 hours consecutively. So yeah, I turned 137 hours total... Makes me happy, brings up my hourly (I get a performance based commission, every 5 hours over 80 gives me an additional $1 an hour total (not after the 80, but total)) so I make an additional $11 per hour total turned, over $1500 in additional pay for performance based initiative, plus my net shop intake bonus for my foreman position... or at least I assume that goes on this pay period. They gave me the foreman position on monday, which was 4 days before my scheduled review and offer of the position. I really got them good with 4 difficult diagnosis, 2 for other techs and I didn't pull the diag labor, and 2 for me. One was a communication issue that was difficult, and the other was so basic it was sad, but it was at 3 other shops where the poor bastard spent almost a grand. I charged him 1.5 hours and an O2 sensor... It is pitiful the "technicians" that are out there. So the job I had worked for 3 months to get is paying off. The work is fantastic (I love the independent "specialty" shop work as difficult is rewarding both financially and personally), the pay is very nice (I will be above my desired pay very easily even with a 30% drop in work) and the people I work with are pretty cool. The owner doesn't have much to do with us aside from advertisement (~20,000 per month), but the shop manager is really cool, and the service writer is pretty strong too, and the techs are decent. I have 1 diagnostic guy who is really good, one nuts and bolts guy, 1 GS, and my apprentice. I wish I had more stalls, but other than that I have no complaints. Oh yeah, I can afford a lot more Double Oaked... Win/win mother fuckers!!!

Little bit of bracing won't hurt it too much, as long as he rounds the ends to help smooth air flow.

Of course the Ethos is the same as the Icon & Warden. Duh! Haven't you read the other thread? More seriously. One parameter does make a speaker. Everything does. Sure you can half bake anything, but don't expect even reasonable results if you keep making assumptions like you are.

They are essentially the same as the Alpine X is the same as Scan Speak? Or are they the same speaker? Any type of frequency responses available of the raw drivers to compare? I use the same cone on my Ethos as SSA Icon and a IA Warden but that doesn't mean they are the same.

You can make an extremely meaty 3" coil to handle power. Maybe one of the main reasons to use a larger diameter coil is to make the pole larger. Metal has a cut off point in which it can no longer absorb or allow magnetism to flow through it. (Akin to copper wire and electricity). When it hits this point, also called "hitting its knee" it can cause flux issues and if severe enough can demagnetize the magnets. The other is true also. If too much metal is in a motor compared to the magnetic force it can act as a resistor impeding magnetic flow resulting in a loss of magnetic flux in the gap.

A horn is way more complex than an enclosure. I wouldn't buy a prefab box and most certainly wouldn't try to piece together a HLCD

Finally got a chance to take a couple pictures of the final product.. Sub is in wiring is "complete" Pretty happy with how clean the install is. The box is definitely big and at some point I might experiment with a sealed enclosure but for now this thing absolutely pounds. photo by ChadS13TDI, on Flickr ssa xcon2 by ChadS13TDI, on Flickr ssa xcon by ChadS13TDI, on Flickr

I have a small update from last weekend.... finished up my amp rack and got the V6 panel in and it all fits perfect. it's very tight. I had to make a few adjustments but in the end it's going to work. very happy with how it turned out. Driverside by ChadS99SVT, on Flickr I still have some wiring to complete but all the wires are run and grounds connected just need to wire up the LC6i. driversside1 by ChadS99SVT, on Flickr Wishing my XCON would hurry and show up!

well I finished my Amp rack. did not go exactly as planned and it's not real fancy or very "clean". The carpet job was a total sh!t show lol but I didn't really care that much because it will be hidden behind the V6 panel. amp by ChadS99SVT, on Flickr on the bottom I will mount a fused distribution block. I tried to get the panel back in but the gas shock has to go through the panel and they make you remove it to slide the trim in so until I figure out how to remove that I can't put the car back together. it's super tight I just hope it all goes together. it seems like it will be ok though.

Box is ready to go. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. My first flush mount box and did it with a jigsaw. now I just continue to wait for my xcon. box complete by ChadS99SVT, on Flickr

update: some new pics....The box isn't complete yet I still need to add the flush mount and cut both holes. Also needs to be carpeted. I stuck it in to get an idea of how big it is. It's big. If I were to do it again I'd probably go sealed maybe 2 sealed but we will see I still havn't heard it. I hope it rocks my socks off because it was a pita so far. damplifier complete by ChadS99SVT, on Flickr damplifier left by ChadS99SVT, on Flickr rear deck by ChadS99SVT, on Flickr box internal by ChadS99SVT, on Flickr box in car by ChadS99SVT, on Flickr battery location by ChadS99SVT, on Flickr

Well today I got the power wire ran and did a tiny bit of sound dampening under the rear seat while I had it out. Man what a PITA running this wire was. Yeah I didn't look that close earlier.....kind of looks like it pooled there. not sure if their grease gun went crazy when hitting the shock in the trunk or what? I am going to get back in there to run the power wire tomorrow and I will look at it closer. I'm not to concerned. Here are a few exterior pics. nothing to great. need to take some better ones. passat3 by ChadS99SVT, on Flickr 7falls by ChadS99SVT, on Flickr

Your install looks so clean man!!! Are you gonna paint the port? I'd do red

My personal opinion is that both subs sound great daily "if that's what you're looking for" and get loud and low doing it (If the enclosure is built correctly) I myself own an Sp4 and a buddy that lives extremely close to me (Sencheezy) owns an evil. I will not go on about how either of us sound better than the other because the setups are totally different. They both sound great in their designed implementations. He is running a crescendo 5500 to his Evil while I run an AQ2200 to my Sp4. He has a huge enclosure with like 180sq (hopefully he will correct me if im off) in of port while I have a small one with like 70sq in, and finally here's the final thing we share in common is that we are both tuned to right at around 31hz and both remain pretty flat on our curves. The truth is the sub is only a small fraction of how well it will sound in what environment you put it in. Just because it has a TC basket and is 18" only means you start off with similarities. The motors are different to start off with, Sp4 has an optional spider spacing and whatnot as well. Hell throw in the Crossfire XSv2 since it has a TC basket. I guess it's the same too right? No, they're all made for different reasons. You have to wear hair gel and sleeveless shirts to rock the crossfire stuff!

Fi wanted a premium 4" coil'ed subwoofer and SSA wanted to add a premium 4" coil'ed subwoofer. I swear to god I was typing this lol

It's become apparent that coil size is not really a deciding factor as world records are still being held by 3" coils too though.

Seriously how idiotic can you guys be? Drinking edub's koolaid, eh? Why limit it to just those two drivers? Sure there is an answer, but when you are asking fishing questions they aren't really worth answering. Take a crack at my last comment instead first. If you don't understand that context you wouldn't get the answers you'll get on this either. So, you are trying to say there is no differentiation in design of ANY decent sub on the market? The only ones that don't fit in your description are either complete pieces of shit or ones with particular applications.
  24. -1 points
Sorry, figured you were a clone of shit stirrer. Fundamentally all subs are designed differently. Normally this is for marketing. The comments in this thread that have me frustrated are: -since they are designed for xxHz they must be the same -since they are both 4" coils they are the same I realize I changed the context of the posts, but not the implication. A coil diameter in general has VERY little to do with the design of the driver. Same with a particular frequency recommendation for a box, it's a car of course it'll be designed for a box that suits cabin gain. Pretty rudimentary, no? Could ask the same question you are asking about the options on the Fi subs. Obviously they change the response as well.

I figured going with a larger coil diameter was more of a "larger bass-penis" to begin with and other reasons later on. There will never be truth to anything in car audio since anyone can prove someone wrong just with bending physics sometimes.
