sundown 4 ch.

Recommended Posts

I tried to post this under the SSA shop section, but this should do it here as well. First, I am planning to order a Sundown 100.4 tomorrow or tuesday, from SSA depending on how fast my winning bidders pay up on ebay. What I need to know is, Can a set of JL audio XR653 and a set of JL audio XR650csi ( the 3-way set and the 2-way set) be okay on this amp. JL says the RMS on these sets is around 75 watts , and I hear the sundowns are underrated. Will I benefit from this amp, will it need to be ran at a minimal power to preserve these speaker sets?

I have a 2007 FJ cruiser, the 3ways are installed already - in the front doors and dash, and the two set is on its way here, to go into the wall about where the rear passengers elbow would hit if they were sitting in the back seats. I have the fronts on a Kenwood excelon KAC-X541, with the input sensitivity way down, and a Kenwood XXV-01D deck. It sounds good, but I dont think it is putting out anywhere near what it is rated at, and if turn up the input gains I drive the speakers into clipping. Either way I am taking out the kenwood amp and putting something else in there.

thanks.

You'll need to set the gains on the 100.4 to send exactly how many watts you want to go to the speakers. A lot of it is by ear. Some by oscilloscope to prevent clipping.

As long as you're careful, that amp will be fine coupled with those component sets.

Run them at fill power. I run a set of Zapco Reference 6.5" comps off of a 100.4 BRIDGED (320-350wrms each) and have 0 issues. You just need to be aware of what your hearing. I almost always run double or triple to my drivers. You cannot beat the headroom.

It is not uncommon in the pro audio world to see speakers getting 3-4 times their rated power. This is the same for good car audio equipment and a hair of know how. I know there not actually seeing what the amp is rated at but they are still getting way more than rated and get much more dynamic.

What do you mean double or triple, as in power ? and the headroom, you mean in the FJ - yeah I wouldn't trade it for anything now, aside from the fact that it has tons of second skin in it - I really like it.

My amp is supposed to be here today :)

Yeah so My 4 ch. came in a couple of days ago. But I am waiting on more sound deadener, 1/0 wire, new RCA cables, 1/0 gauge ring terminals, and my other set of JL audio comps. ( I ordered them a little later than I had planned ) - The ups guy is gonna hate me by the weeks end. I have spent close to 1400 bucks just doin some little "upgrades" . When I get it in I will come back and let you guys have a look.... cause I already have a boat load of second skin in there now, 2-12" alpine type-R subs ( doesn't everybody?) and a kenwood xxv-01D deck. I am thinking of building a more specifically tuned box for my subs too, cause I know they got more to give and that little alpine MRD-M1005 does a good job. If these subs that I have were dual 4 ohms, I would pick up a saz-1500 for em. :(

got the amp installed, made a little MDF "rack" to mount it on, ran new stinger HPM level 3 RCAs , Knukonceptz 1/0 wires, and put in my JL XR 650-CSi comps in the back seats, with a whole bunch more second skin stuff...
