New 2008 Btl's Breaking In, Louder Then Ever!

Recommended Posts

well its been about a month and im happy to report that my subs are breaking in a little....they are still very stiff so they arent all the way broken in yet but they sound better every day :) My laptop is broke so i cant meter it ATM and i dont really have a place to do it anyway (or the time to do it) but to me, knowing what it DID sound like, i have to say its louder and has more authority. I can tell by watching the hairtrick vids i made that there is a difference. Also, i usually use the large screws with #3 heads to hold the subs in but for the past year almost i have had to use the "gold" screws from home depot and put them in at an angle to get to "fresh meat". The larger, thicker screws wont let me go at an angle like the thinner ones will. The speaker cut out holes have taken damage due to 4 years of subs in and out. (I had the RE MT's in and out of that box 20x more then any of my BTL's)....anyway, the gold screws were working great for the longest time but just recently i looked back and saw two of my subs LITTERALLY gettin up out tha' box. I broke every single screw on 2 of the subs....Something that NEVER happened before (for me anyway).

Anyway, its just a slight updated "review" but these subs are AWESOME. Add that to the new tinsel configuration (sandwiched in the spiders) and you got one hell of a sub!

Ill report back on this after another month of abuse and they should be even more softened up by then. I REALLY need me a new box though.....this one has done its time in the line of duty for sure at almost 4 years old :D

also, i posted this mini review on my site and a few people had comments on why i hadnt made the review earlier, maybe due to me not being "happy" with them. Here is my response so i dont have to retype it all again.....

--------------------------------------------

Well at first, they had a "different" sound to them. It wasnt that i wasnt happy, it was just different. Brand new, 5 spiders, stronger motor will sound different. I was used to my WELL broken in older BTL's. Last time i reconed my old ones, in October, i felt the same way....i was like damn....but a week or two later i was happy as hell. Same thing is happening here, the more i "stretch" them out the more i like them and on top of that the tinsel issues have been resolved. Im running more then double the RMS and tinsels werent a big problem but i did break at least 2 in the year and a half i had the older ones. Not bad, i broke 2 a month with my older brand....not that it was their fault, ive always ran more then double the RMS. ;)

Anyway, whether or not it meters louder i dont know.....but to me they sound louder, they feel louder and they are shaking my truck harder. Thats what matters the most. I heard a rumor that someone was sayin they werent as loud as my old ones....thats BULLchit. Regardless of opinion, SPL affects people differently, they arent any quiter at all. No matter what, they will meter at LEAST as loud as they were but now more reliable. My box will hold my score back more than anything else, i think i got all there is to get out of this design/configuration. I was doing a 156.5 dash, 157.4 kick and a few 158's at the pad in 2004.....basicly you can only squeeze so much SPL out of this turnup :D One day i will be able to devote some time to a new box but right now it involves moving my batteries and will be a huge RE-do...no time and it hits PLENTY hard the way it is. F#ck it :D

nice steve, finally soemone whos heard both and can give a fair judgement. on the screws have you thought about using t-nuts? i use them in all my boxes, you don't have to worry about the wood coming fatigue after repeated un-screwing plus they allow you to use different types of screws say hex head, for a more security perspective.

Man mine are definitely louder. After a good two weeks of hard break in, I metered mine. Exact same configuration subs (dual 1's, dual 1 gaps, long coil), same box, same amps. Gained 0.9 dB sealed on the dash. Went from 153.9 to 154.8 @ 36 Hz.

That is a very good gain after only 2 weeks of break in time...
