Ohms...those got'damned ohms...

Recommended Posts

alright. i have an 8 ohm sub amp that is stock with my altec-lansings. totally wrong forum, i know it seems but wait. it is in my backpack, so there for it is mobile. well it isnt in a car, but thats not the point! 5" woofer, two bose 3's for mids, and two 50w roadmaster tweets. runnin highs and mids series'd , with crossovers of course, at 2ohms but woofer is at 8. would it be safe to run two 4 ohm woofers series'd at 2 ohm on an 8 ohm amp? thinkin bout these:

in this

main concern is decent LSQ. lous as a mutha(expletive) now but thats just the highs, blazingly crisp but missing that low end. plus, i need port ideas cuz the 1.5inch wide port aint gonna let these suckers breath. here is original enslocure specs:

Dimensions: 11.3" Height x 6.4" Width x 7.7" Depth - Subwoofer

port is about 2inches high, 1 inch wide, ovular...(is that even a word?) and 8 inches long.

thanks for tolerating my brutal creativity, and thanks for any positive ideas!

is it safe to run a 2 ohm load on an 8 ohm rated amp..... no.

but you can wire diffrent ohm loads togather on one channel like 2 4 ohm speakers with 1 8 ohm speaker...... check this out.

How are you getting 2 ohms when you have them wired in series?

Eh, I wouldn't risk it. Why don't you get 2 woofers that allow you to wire them in at 8 ohms?

yeah, now that i think about it thats pro'lly why my first few setups failed, 8 ohm amps at lower than 2 ohm levels. i think i will go with 2 tang band 5's unless anyone thinks i should double my cost and save for a 6x9?

i am gettin worried about the box having enough air for these high excursion monsters. so give me port ideas people! it is 7.5in x 11in x 6in with a port that is 2in high 1in wide and 8in long. just about,

so what kind of port would i need to feed two of these:

or one of these:

No and no, more detail is required. What amp, what crossover, what enclosure...

TOTAL CONTINUOUS POWER:

28 Watts RMS

FRONT SPEAKERS:

6 Watts/channel @ 4 ohms @ 10% THD @

150 Hz - 20000 Hz 2 Channels Loaded

SUBWOOFER: 16 Watts @ 8 ohms @ 10 %

THD @ 30 - 150 Hz Single Channel Loaded

SYSTEM RESPONSE: 35 Hz - 20 kHz (-10 dB)

I've seen some optimistic specs printed before, but if they're actually printing that, that's hilarious :D

why is it so funny? :welcomeLW:

10% THD on a cheap solid state amp, and +/- 10dB in the frequency response, for one :)

My comment was that usually, specification sheets are hopelessly optimistic so if A-L is actually printing that, who knows how bad it really is :)

Definitely not the Altec of old, that's for sure...

besides choppy clipped bass @ 8ohms, it sounds great to me. nice and clear. just need that full linearity of the woofer to reproduce the full bass spectrum.

Download a copy of WINISD or Boxplot 2.0 (both free) and crunch the numbers. If you were able to sign up and register on this site, you should be able to pull some port dimensions out of either of those two programs.

Not so sure putting the TB's in there will help, may actually make it worse.

Oh, and this will never be hijacked into an SQ thread. Not even close.

would even adding the one TB in the precut location make it sound any better? mainly looking for decent low-end response, like say, the low note in "i run this" by birdman and lil wayne. just want LSQ lol is it even possible?
