computer problem again..........

Recommended Posts

ok, a few months ago we got DSL and i was expecting some problems with adware and such. well a few days ago i began noticing that some internet links were not working. it does it on all websites, sometimes you can right click and click open in new window and that will work. other times the new window will pop up and in the address bar is the site address and at the beginning it says javascript and some parentheses and some apostophes (sp.?) and all you have to do is backspace all the stuff that looks like it doesnt belong in the address and hit enter and the site will come up. none of the "java" sites work, like if there is animation or whatever on the site, then the links dont work and you cant right click because all it says is what is java or shockwave or something, you cant click open in new window. anybody know whats wrong? how to fix it? if you need more info just ask. thanks in advance

i thought i had. i run norton and ad-aware 6.0 about 2 times per week. i frequently delete cookies and temporary internet files, i delete some programs on my hard drive from "add/remove programs" that look like they are spyware and they serve no purpose. where else can i find spyware?

also download the program - spybot - search and destroy

not sure what the exact link is but just search on google and ull find it.

its free and finds spyware, which is different (and more harmful) from adware.

yeah its a pretty simple program... you just click on the icon that has like a stick of dynamite on it to run it... then click like search, and then just delete anything that seems like spyware, like "XXX Hot Steamy Sex Toolbar Download Now dfkjak;lfjihfd;safnda"

but dont delete stuff like "Windows Operating System"

Other places spyware might have installed itself is in the 'C:\Program Files' folder. Check there and look for anything that you are sure you didnt install, examples: Casclient, ISTbar, Bargain buddy, Internet optimizer. thats just what I can think of right now.

woah woah woah...

before you go deleting ANYTHING!!!

download Adaware SE personal edition. there are no longer updates for 6.0 ;)

also it may be time to upgrade your norton to the newest version, i dont know if 2005 does it, but Symantec SAV10 (and 9 too i think) not only scan in the backround for viruses all the time but also adware and spyware.

Do you have your DSL running through a router? if not id suggest on getting more than just windows firewall.

and why where you expecting to have pop ups just from a switch to DSL????

also, spybot sucks ass, waste of harddrive space. Adaware will catch EVERYTHING spybot will plus more and will more thourghly destroy it.

IF you find somehting which adaware cannot destroy THEN look up how to on the net, i may be bale to help you. these PITA programs usually require things such as starting in safe mode and deleting specific "windows" files and regestry keys.

Cleaning peoples computers of this crap is a large portion of my dads business when i work in full time during the summer ;)

also, spyware and adware is no longer blatantly place on your cumputer as porn...they are now being disguised as windows *.dll files among others.

another program you MAY need is one called end it all...however...you shall cross that bidge if you come to it. End it all is a VERY dangerous program if you dont know what you are doing...basically it ends all processes (including explorer.exe) except for thoes few vital to keeping windows stable. you have a command promt...which you will have to find specific files with and delete them. however there are few spyware programs which need this type of thorogh removal ;)

i dunno about spybot sucking. i am downloading SE personal edition 1.06 from download.com right now. i ran spybot and it came up with 164 problems and fixed all but 2 of them. the last 2 are Altnet and HuntBar. they are registry keys and i found them in the registry editor and tried to manually delete them but it will not let me.

here are the key names:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\BTIEIN

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altnet

while im at it, our norton needs to be updated in about a month. anybody have any advice on what to do. should i just update norton or should i buy Mcafee, i have heard that Mcafee is better than norton. which is better or are the about the same?

Restart your computer and spybot or adaware will get rid of them once you reboot.

The only reason I said delete those folders in Program files is because I havent found a program yet that will catch those for some reason, so ive always had to either remove with add/remove or manually delete.

Ewido security guard is pretty good about catching things in real time.

yes be very careful, there are some confusing naming designations in the list that it will produce and they will be vital the running of the operating system or functionality between programs, if you want to run it and copy and paste the list or upload a print screen of the list we can help you go through what can be deleted,

also if it was not mentioned before look into downloading Adware6, it is like SpyBot in its useage and execution, sometimes one will pick up something the other did not, so it does not hurt to have both, in addition if not mentioned maybe move to using Opera as your browser (www.opera.com) or Firefox, both are far superior in protecting the computer when you are online than IE, the links to both are in my sig

the computer is running soooo much better now. im pretty sure i got everything other than altnet and huntbar and those i dont know how to get deleted, i tried everything. i've got killbox and when i type in the key for those, a window pops up and says the file is nonexistent. i didnt try ewido, but i think i got the bulk of the problem, the only thing is those internet links dont work, but our printer works all the time and the computer is so much faster.
