2 12"s ? Help me choose, please!

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I need 2 12" subs for a friend of mine. He has an MTX TE 4000 to run them.

He doesn't really know what to get.

He drive a small car (renault Clio) with a hatchback.

He will be able to fit a 3 to 3.5 ft3 ported box in his trunk.

He's still undecided ! AA Mayhems are his first choice, but I asked Some info about the DC Level 4 xl, and he saw the Orion HCCA.

He seems to like the Orion. But we never listened to any of those subs.

What do you think about those 3.

I think the Orion is not the best choice, but when he reads the specs, he likes them : low Fs, high sd, big motor !!!

What can I tell him to choose?

All those 3 are in the same budget , with shipping.

I forgot to add that he listens to rap and reggae.

And sometimes likes to compete in our local spl comps.

He has a lot of mids & highs too !!!

:thanx: for your advices.

The HCCA is it's low Fs due to a monster 4" coil, it's not a bad woofer but not the best option. I would pick a Mayhem as well, the DC woofers are based off Scott Atwell's designes at RE, the ones he has since improved and the technology is used by Fi/AA.

no to the hcca if its the newer ones. old school ones were tc9 based I think. They were pretty good. It would be between the mayhem and the xl. :)

Is there any particular reason he hasn't considered the btl's?

btl or mayhem ? We thought the mayhem is better for music. He will compete from time to time, but he will mostly listen to music, loudly !

price is quite the same, isn't it ?

Oh ok cool. Was just curious because i was thinking that the btl could take that power. Have heard alot if great things about the mayhem. Not sure of the price on the mayhem but the btl is actually not ad expensive as one might expect

For a daily driver Mayhem > BTL, but for numbers BTL > Mayhem

Finally my friend decided to get 2 Orion hcca in 12".

He made a small box with a very small port (!!!) but he seems to be happy.:peepwall:

He admits that those subs don't play really low, like an Xcon. But I told him that the problem may come from his box.

Enclosure size and port area is why it is not playing the lows.
