I hate to tell you but it sounds like you will have to reformat.

I suggest you get a backup HD and keep all vital info on it. That way if you get a virus detected you can go through the infected one and get the files that you need off it and reformat the other. then make another copy like last time.

or

Get a mac :P

Or stay off the porn and use FIREFOX!!!

Sorry, but true. If you have Winsuck XP/2K/98 you need to use Firefox and be ready to format twice a year. You need a backup HD and learn to save what you want to keep on it. It will make life in the next few years, much less stressful. Especially if you keep music, long install video games, and/or digital pictures on your pc. 300gb drives are now $110 so it is pretty easy.

Not trying to pick on you, it will just really make things easier for anybody in this situation. I format every 3-4 months just out of habit....

Get good Anti-virus, Firewall, and active anti-spyware programs ...

I personally use Norton Internet Security on most of the systems I do because it has everything you need, you can get an unlimited subscription easily and it works well, although it is a resource hog (not recommended if you have less than 512 MB of RAM or if you're a hardcore gamer) ...

NOD32 is a superior anti-virus if you already have a good firewall ...

Microsoft Anti-Spyware is my choice for anti-spyware software combined with weekly scans by Lavasoft Adaware.

Use Firefox if you're afraid of getting stuff. Personally, I prefer Internet Explorer because some of my sites don't work with Firefox and because I find it loads pages faster.

Staying away from Warez and Porn sites is crucial. I would also avoid any P2P sharing programs (Kazaa, Bearshare, Limewire, etc.) as pretty much all of them have at least some spyware. Usenet/Newsgroups allows for super-fast, anonymous downloads and doesn't chew up your bandwidth uploading to others. Bittorrent is also pretty good, although they can track you through it. For individual songs (which I rarely get), I still use WinMX. It's actually pretty fast since they shut it down.

Music download = porn for carrying disease for the pc indeed.

Jmac, you find IE faster than Firefox??? Complete opposite on my pc and it is very noticeable. Most of the website compatibilities were fixed with the last update or so too. Except of course the ones for my company.

You can surely use all the software to knock this out, but being a Windows machine being ready to format at any time will save you lots of headaches. You just never have to be worried about what happens then. I had 3 formats caused by spyware that were not picked up by Spybot, Adaware, and Micro Anti-Spy within 4 months. Like you I will blame the woman or visiting friends  but nonetheless it taught me to be ready. Now I do it to maximize resources: driver only, no software installs for all peripherals will speed up your machine lots.

Well, I have all my important files backed up to DVD anyways ... and I have a seperate Windows partition, so I only have to reformat that (much quicker and easier) ...

I also don't let people use the computer without my supervision or training on what not to do ...

Oddly enough, my mom was visiting a DVD forum of all places that tried to download a virus onto my computer. My mom's computer never once detected, but upon a manual search for the virus, it was there. After switching to NOD32, it also detected the virus. Scary, huh ?

BTW, she was using PC-cillin ...

Yes, I do find IE faster than Firefox ... and a couple of my pages still don't work, including my new job's e-training page (which I just tried on FF) ... I've tweaked IE a little though, which may be why ...

Download Spybot S&D and Adaware, make sure they're all updated, reboot into safemode and run both programs to make sure you have completely rid your PC of all spyware that they can detect.
